Your Poplar Place and Southern Pines Dressage Updates

Whether you are first or last, at least your Friday wasn't this bad [via LisaB]

Southern Pines: Allison Springer and Arthur haven't lost a step from their Red Hills win and they lead the SoPo Advanced-A by 2 points over Boyd and Remington.  Will Coleman and Twizzel are in a three-way tie for third.  Kristi Nunnink and R-Star seemed to have had a very smooth transition out east and are also in third.  Emily Beshear and the very talented Here's To You are also in 3rd on a 30.6.  Tiana Coudray and Master Hill have also arrived out east and they are tied for 7th.

The Advanced-B division is still in progress as I write this, but Peter Barry and Kilrodan Abbott have the clubhouse lead with Lucia Strini and Oudo in second.  Click the link to the live scores above for the latest results.

Preliminary and Training divisions are doing cross-country today at Southern Pines as well as dressage.  Marley Stone and Unbelievable jumped from second to first in the OP-B with a double-clear.  Lee Lee Jones and Model Cadet held on to a 4 point lead in the Preliminary Rider, and the training divisions are still on course.

As a programming note, the Horse Radio Network will have a live show from Southern Pines starting at 5pm ET.  Click here to listen to the show live or listen to an archived version later.

Poplar PlaceDiana Burnett and Manny performed the second best scoring test of their career to lead the Advanced-A division at Poplar Place.  Karen O'Connor and Mandiba are a full 5 points back, tied with Clark Montgomery and Unvierse, a horse who is just doing the second advanced of his promising career.  Buck Davidson and Ballynoecastle RM are in 5th tied with Micheline Jordan and Irish Diamonds.

There was one rider in the Open Novice at Poplar who had a decent test.  I think this rider has a lot of potential to do well at the upper levels someday, maybe even advanced, if they get more experience.  Perhaps you have heard of him--some guy named David O'Connor?  Here's the test:

Update: Some girl named Annie is winning the Open Training

The other Poplar divisions still have scores coming in, but there is a tie atop the Junior Prelim Division, with Megan Johnson and Rapport tied with Danielle Dichting and Fernhill Fugitive.  Cathy Wieschhoff and Simba lead the OP by three points over Buck and Oscar.

--As a final note this afternoon, there will be a gathering of friends & family to remember and reminisce about Area VIII's Terry Kennedy on Saturday April 2 from 4 - 6 pm at the Bass Lake Tavern in Chardon.  If you knew or knew of Terry you are cordially invited by the Kennedy family.

Back in the good ol’ days…

Long before the days of newfangled inventions like frangible devices, the internet, and the wheel, eventers jumped around the hallowed fields at the Badminton Horse Trials.  Eventing has come a long way since then but it's always good to look back at where our sport came from.  I believe the below footage is from the 60's.  The video won't play in some browsers, so click the here to watch it on its original website.

Happy Friday’s News and Notes

[via 3shoes]

Good morning Eventing Nation, and what a big morning it is!  For many Rolex horses, this weekend is the second to last competition before Kentucky, and this weekend is a major stepping stone for the spring three-days at every level here in the US.  Let's get right to the competition previews and notes:

--The third of seven 2011 events at Poplar Place farm in Georgia start today.  The event is hosting beginner novice through advanced horse trials as well as a CIC* and CIC2*.  Dressage starts at 8am with beautiful weather expected throughout the day.  Annie is competing at Poplar this weekend and she will be stopping by with a few updates.   [Poplar Place Live Scores, Weather, Ride Times PDF]

--Just over 400 miles away in Southern Pines, North Carolina, the Carolina Horse Park is hosting the rest of the east coast horses for a training level through advanced horse trials.  Like Poplar, Southern Pines offers a great course and great facilities, but the weather looks like it could be a bit more temperamental than in Georgia.  Coren is riding at SoPo, and we will get a report from her as well during the weekend.  Good luck and major EN Karma at the events this weekend.  [Weather, Live Scores, Ride Times PDF]

--In Australian eventing news, the Melbourne CCI3* is preparing for another great competition in June.  Melbourne is the oldest eventing competition in the southern hemisphere, and it is one of just 4 CCI3*'s in Australia.  [Press Release]

--The USEA shows some love to Bromont

--Here are a few fun facts about your Badminton entries [via Gazette]:

1) 40 time three-day winner WFP can choose two of his 4 entered horses to compete.
2) Badminton has entries from 12 nations
3) Andrew Nicholson has competed at Badminton 29 times
4) 3 time Badminton winner Pippa Funnell returns for the first time since 2008
5) Amateur James Robinson will help Comanche make his 9th start at Badminton

--You could compete for Team GB in South Africa...if you are a tentpegger...and if you are British.  No, against all odds, tentpegging is not a euphamism, it is an equestrian sport.  [H&C]

--Ecogold rider and Badminton entrant Kristin Schmolze

--Lansko Products Inc. has recalled box fans because they light on fire.  I guess no one is perfect, but if you produce and market box fans for barns and homes, you'd think you would at the very least make sure they don't catch fire!  A fan that ignites is like headache medicine that causes heart attacks.  [TheHorse.com]

--In a touching story from Texas, a pony named Midnite has been given a second chance in life with the donation of a prosthetic leg.  A team of generous supporters donated a great deal of time to saving Midnite's life and the story is an inspiration for all of us. [Horsetalk]

That's all for now. I want to give a huge good luck to all the competitors this weekend. Wherever you may be, thanks for making Eventing Nation part of your day and go eventing.

A Tribute View From My Horse from World Equestrian Brands

This week's ears photo was submitted by one of our readers, Karen, of her horse and companion of twenty one years, Wesley. She sent me this photo and recently sent a note saying Wesley passed away last week in his pasture. Thanks to Karen for submitting and our deepest condolences for her loss.

111-1.jpg
From Karen:

This is the view from atop my horse Wesley (reg. name Western Adversary) a couple summers ago.  No particular story attached, but I thought the shadow was kind of cool, since it wasn't photographed intentionally.  Wes has been with me since he was 4 years old, unable to return to racing following knee surgery to remove a bone chip.  We dabbled at a lot of things: dressage, English pleasure, trail riding, camping.  The one thing we didn't do much of is jump, because I was afraid of re-injuring his knee.  When Wes turned 21, I tried to retire him; but he became so listless--seemed so unhappy and bored--that (talk about a complete change of strategy) we made a brief foray into the world of eventing instead, competing in mini-trials at the Intro and Very Green levels.  It perked him right up again, and for me it was the realization of a longstanding dream.

Boot Camp

If you have ever had  the opportunity to take a lesson from Karen, you can imagine exactly how the situation in the picture sounds, with the instructions ringing out across the Meredyth South fields.  Valerie Vizcarrondo recently attended what is affectionately known as "O'Connor boot camp," which is usually characterized by a stretch of lessons during a quick trip to FL.  In my experience, people either click with Karen or they don't, and it seems that Valerie did.  You can read about the experience at Valerie's blog.  [Valerie V's blog]

***SOLD*** Very Elegant Green Prospect

100_5597.jpg

100_5605.jpg

100_5606.jpg

100_5607.jpg

Description16.2 1/2 2005 TB G. This horse raced the day before I bought him. He walked out of his stall w/ 4 stone cold clean tight legs, he only needed 4 strides of the most elegant, panther like athletic walk to say "Sold" to me.

(call for JC name and race record)

He has such a calm demeanor and kind intelligent eyes to go with his big elegant frame. 100% correct, uphill build with lovely soft gaits. When he lengthens a stride he doesn't go faster..he just gets longer and more loft to his gaits. He transitions "Up" not down from gait to gait. He barely pats the landing the few times we have free jumped him. Willing and forward, no awkward stupid, confused what?? moments.

He will be one of the nicest easiest OTTB, green rides anyone has ever sat on. Gives you a calm, even, smooth ride.

Pure and total Gentleman, he learned the stand @ mounting block in one go. For a dead fit racing horse....We have already invited 2 very amateur ladies to ride him to gauge his reaction and ride ability. Easy to steer, moves easy off the leg, and a lovely soft responsive mouth.

We have already shipped off the property to school..oh he's a 4* one person shipper....he handled a strange barn and ring w/ flat footed calmness. Hardly gave any new surroundings or commotion a 2nd glance and certainly no spook.

He is going to move right along into a new job and never look back. He has no previous lameness or unsoundness history. I bought another horse from his track trainer by same sire and he is doing exceptionally well as a young eventer. Same conformation, same brain, same athletic prows.

No vices, wonderful manners, will be very amateur friendly, for those who want to work w/ trainer but keep horse @ home and make-up themselves.

Adjectives: Elegant, Calm, Talent

Elizabeth Taylor’s Thursday Reader from Horse Quencher

All of us can probably point to a few moments in our lives that ignited our love for horses and made us know that we had to ride.  For some, it was watching a young girl, named Velvet, ride "Pi" in the 1944 movie National Velvet.  Velvet was played by iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor who passed away peacefully on Wednesday after a long career of acting and philanthropy.  In the movie, Pi was an untamed horse who Velvet trained for the British Grand National steeplechase.  Somehow the new horse movies don't seem to capture as much passion for horses as older movies such as National Velvet.  [via KMD, Extended National Velvet Trailer, 3D3W]  Now for your quick news and notes:

--In eventing, being a good student is just as important as finding a good coach.  My top three practical tips to becoming a better student are to keep a journal of your lessons and daily rides, think about your last lesson for two minutes before every ride, and never be afraid to ask a question if you don't understand something.  The USEA has published a cool overview of being coached.  [USEA blog]

--Ecogold's trip around America

--Canada had training sessions this week in Ocala getting ready for Poplar.  The next USEF training sessions will be out in California for Galway next week and then The Fork the following week.

--Diana Burnett's latest blog entry highlights the ups and downs and ups and downs of life as an eventer.  From getting her truck and trailer annihilated by a semi a few weeks ago to an injured horse to a great training session and a good weekend at Red Hills, Diana has seen it all over the last month.  The last paragraph of Diana's blog says it all:

"Through all of this I've learned how nice it is to be in a sport with so many wonderful people that are always offering a helping hand when one is needed.  I've always known that our barn in Florida and at home is full of truly great people, but this event has just further reinforced that.  Through all of this fiasco there were no glum days, just positive thoughts and lots of support for each other.  And that right there is what makes a good team!!"

--Our friends at the Seneca Valley Pony Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and they asked us to help them to track down previous members/parents/sponsors.  They are planning to hold a reunion celebration party this summer or in conjunction with their Fall Horse Trials.  If you are a Seneca alum, contact Nancy at 2011svpcdc@gmail.com.  I also hear that they have some cool new improvements to the cross-country course for their horse trials.

--I know that when you wake up every morning you think to yourself "my day would be a lot better if EN could do more contests."  Well, we have lots more in the works and for today we will introduce you to a contest through Horse Quencher.  Click the link to enter and win 4 cool prizes each month, including a 20lb bucket of Horse Quencher.  Horse Quencher is a healthy yet strangely addictive substance that, when mixed with water, causes exhausted, stressed, traveling, competing, or just plain finicky horses to rehydrate themselves for renewed vim and vigor, then Marmaduke you for more. Best of all, when you enter you can request a free trial sample.  [Enter here]

Reminder--Times are better 60 years after this movie was made, always wear your helmet

That's all for now. If you are shipping to Poplar or Southern Pines today then have a good trip. Keep it locked on Eventing Nation throughout the weekend for complete Poplar and SoPo coverage. Wherever you may be, thanks for making Eventing Nation part of your day. Go eventing.

More riders want Rolex bumper stickers

For our European readers, Rolex looks exactly like this except cooler

The Rolex entry list continues to grow and, while my counting is unreliable with numbers higher than 10, there are now 33 horses entered.  The entry postings have a lag time of course and different riders have superstitions about entries so I expect quite a few to come in at the last minute.  The entries officially close March 29th.

The most recent additions to the list are Peter Barry and the pride of Canada, Kilrodan Abbott.  That horse has made every single XC and show jumping course I have ever seen it jump look easy and if Saturday at Rolex goes the right way, look to see that pair in the top 10, possibly even the top 5.  Boyd and Remington have also been added to the list along with Jil Walton and My Sedona.  Jessica Phoenix has also been added with both Exploring and Exponential.  The Head of the Lake will definitely remember Exponential from the WEGs.

In other Rolex news, New Zealander Joe Meyer's Rolex featured rider blog was posted earlier today.  [Joe's blog]

Where ESJ went wrong: Ipad 2 at Red Hills!

When I wrote my Red Hills wrap up I truly thought that was the end of my Tallahassee tales for the year, even though I did title it, "It aint over..." so maybe subconsciously I wasn't ready to put it to bed, and, Lo and Behold, there is a sequel.

Our very own Eventing Safety John had made no secret of his intention to get his Aussie hands on a brand new Ipad 2, released the weekend of Red Hills, as just one of the many attractions for him of the event, and he spent most of Friday night trawling Best Buy, Walmart and Target to no avail, for as our savvy reader reveals, he was way too late to that party!
image-thumb38.png
I mentioned that there was someone filming the show-jumping on sunday on a new Ipad 2, and that someone is Chris Barry, whose sister Lisa was 3rd in the advanced section on Kenzo de la Roque, and here is the famous video!
How do we know all this? We know this because EventingNation has the best readers EVAH,  who comment, and contribute! Chris' parents told him he had been busted, and he in turn wrote to me, at some length, and I'm delighted to be able to share his story in his own words...
"I am a serious technology nerd, and a die-hard, no compromises, Apple person...  I have in front of me at the office right now: a new 13" MacBook with a 22" screen attached to it, an iPad 2 sitting on a stand next to an iPhone 4 on a charger, and an iMac from 1999 (that a neighbor tried to throw out) on a shelf here in my office that I've torn the insides out of and turned into a TV... At home, there's a 2008 iMac, another MacBook, 4 iPods, an iPhone 3G, three wireless routers, and I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting.  I have a technology problem. :-)  All of that to say that I was quite eager to get the new iPad a few weekends back, and it's pretty fantastic!!
As far as professionally, I work for The Nature Conservancy here in Tallahassee, mainly as a lobbyist at the state and federal levels, and in my spare time I do contract graphic design work.  The iPad 2 was actually a result of one of the graphic design jobs, which happened to time out nicely with when the invoice was processed and when the iPad was released.
Dressage day at RH was the same as the release of the new iPad, as you know.  Lisa was riding Kenzo at 2:40, and so I left work at lunch so that I could see her ride and spend some time in the stables with her and my mom.  On the way out to the grounds, I swung into Target to see what their plans were for the launch at 5, and when the mgr that I happened to run into said that they only had 5 units in the store, I told him that I had to have one, waiting a month for shipping wasn't an option, and that I'd gladly hang out in the outdoor furniture section for the next three and a half hours if that was necessary, BUT (this is where RH comes in) I was supposed to go watch my sister ride at Red Hills, and I was really concerned that I wouldn't be able to be back until around 3:30 at the earliest, so what should I do?  Would it be necessary to wait, and miss her ride, or is there something he could do that would ensure that as long as I came back early, I would still be the first in line?  Keep in mind, there had been a line forming outside of Best Buy across town at 11:30 that morning, so I was pretty concerned that not staying at Target all afternoon would cost me.
It appeared that because I told him I had to leave, but was willing, if I had to, to miss her ride caused him to start a list of people that showed up for the iPad.  They only had 5, and an hour after I left to go to the Trials, the list was at 7 people--I just happened to be first on that list.  So, when I rolled back in there at 4, there were 4 other people waiting, and we sat around the store for an hour until the clocks changed to 5:00 on the registers.  They scanned the box instantly, and I would assume that I was one of the first people in the world to own one. The whole thing took less than 60 seconds, my receipt actually says 5:00.
I decided to tape stadium to see how the quality was, since the video camera capabilities were such a big part of the remodel from the original iPad.  I've actually got the same kind of tape of whomever it was that finished 2nd in the 3-star, that was my first test of the camera.  I do have the blue Smart Cover from the commercials, it's quite a feat of engineering, actually.  My wife was in Philly that weekend, and she actually had to go to the Apple Store there to get the cover and the stand, because no one in town had extra covers, they only had enough for the devices in stock, if they had them at all.  So it was Sunday before I had the cover, but that was ok. People have been coming up to me in the Capitol for the last two weeks asking how the whole device is...
overview_videos_image_20110302.jpg
Functionally, it's already changed what I take with me to the Capitol.  I can do virtually everything that I'd need to do over there on it, from pulling down bill language to Committee Hearing packets, schedules, etc. I can edit documents, handle all my email accounts, and frankly the built-in calendar app is one of the best electronic calendars I've seen.  I carry a lot less paper now, so it's lightened up what I need to have on me, which is nice as it gets hotter up here, less bulk is a good thing.  It's also a nice thing to be able to show legislators maps and things on the screen, where I can zoom in to see specific parcels of land, or their individual district, which isn't possible on one sheet of paper, obviously."
Lisa going through the water, filmed on an iphone
I do feel bad for Eventing Safety John, who basically fell at the first fence as far as procuring the magic notebook was concerned, and who I'm sure is either weeping or drinking uncontrollably by now, it sounds sweeet!  Not content with drilling poor Chris for information about the golden tablet, I also pumped him for personal information, and his impressions of eventers.
"I actually rode quite a bit as a kid (don't remember what I got to in Pony Club, mom maintains that I was talented), but as horses are to Lisa, hockey was to me, so pretty much everything else went away.  Its great to get to see Lisa ride though, which is something that I rarely get to do.  She really had a great weekend, and I know she was pumped about having the best XC time & finishing 3rd, plus she really liked the new water jump...
IMG_1002.JPG
Red Hills in Tallahassee is actually quite popular, I'm very impressed with the way that the event is put on, and how the community supports it. The whole place was quite sad when they cancelled the event a couple years ago.  I'm really impressed by the transport methods from the parking for spectators.
The public address announcers at RH at least do a great job of putting little factoids and tidbits in their color commentary, which I think for those who don't know what they're really looking at, makes things make more sense.  I like the colored jackets for the international riders, that's a nice touch and I also loved Jessica Phoenix's Team Canada helmet for stadium, that was pretty awesome.
IMG_1316.JPG
I do think there's a need, though, at least at RH, for some more bleacher-type (for XC) seating, it's rather tough to see more than a few jumps from any one place, which may be just a reality of the RH grounds more than anything else. The sound system could be a bit more imposing, it was a bit tough to hear depending on where you were around the XC course. People genuinely do look forward to the event here, though, it's a big deal to this town.  We don't get a lot of exciting visitors, it's mostly just government and college kids in Tallahassee, so when RH comes to town, there's a lot of buzz. I wonder if that's the case at other events, or if this is unique because of the location?
Overall, though, it does seem like there's a lot of goodwill & friendship between the competitors, but with the scheduling the way it is, it seemed to me like most people were all business in the stables.  However, it does appear that outside the barns, and at night, it's a different story.  From what I've heard, there's a Lewis Black joke that applies, I think... "You are NOT alcoholics... you're professionals."
This isn't that joke, & WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE, but it's f***ing funny!
And you apparently all wear the same boots--those Dubarry ones with the stripes--it's a bit like Birkenstocks at a Phish concert. :-)
Many many thanks to Chris for sharing his story with us so generously and with such with wit, and congratulations to Lisa, we'll be following her with interest. For the record, I absolutely do NOT wear Dubarry's, I'm a loyal Hunter wellies girl. Thank you for reading, thank you once again to Red Hills Horse Trials and Tallahassee, to Chris Barry, and thank you for reading, Go Eventing!
(Happy Ending Update: I have heard directly from ESJ that the Ipad 2's go on sale down under tomorrow and he hopes to have one soon - we'll post a picture of him with the goods in hand as proof as soon as possible!)
