The ULTIMATE – and when I say ultimate in all caps I mean ultimate- shirt for eventers! Brought to you by a professional eventer herself Jennifer Morse from One Horse Threads.

One Horse Threads creates cool shirts where equestrian meets hippie meets edgy. All in one place. But there’s one shirt that stuck out in particular to me- The “Eventing Crew Neck”. Putting the shirt on for the first time- feels like putting on your favorite worn out tee shirt that’s so soft you just can’t bear to part with. But it’s stays super stylish with it’s semi see through marble color and tight fit.

The pattern on the shirt is the best part- stating the obvious truth ” Three Day Eventing Greatest Sport In the World”. Yes, such a shirt exists.  Soon you’ll be wearing it everywhere- shows, the tack shop, the mall, even school!

Brand Spotlight: Pony Glam

The Eventing Nation Brand Spotlight is a weekly article highlighting up and coming brands. If you know of a brand that should be featured email [email protected].

What’s the perfect combination of three things eventers love (sparkles, colors, and horse care- obviously)? Pony Glam: The home of lightly colored and sparkly hoof polish that actually is vet and farrier approved to help your horse’s hooves. Yeah! Your run of the mill sparkly hoof polish has nothing on this!

Sasha rocking the Gimme Gold Hoof polish and Back On Track wraps after her flat school

Sasha rocking the Gimme Gold Hoof polish and Back On Track wraps after her flat school

The hoof polish only has a slight color and sparkle, to be seen in the sun. This way you don’t have to feel like your horse’s entire hoof is pink- just a slight tinge. With fun colors like pink, blue, purple, gold and silver, you can match them to your cross country colors, skull cap, or even your outfit!

And, like a normal hoof conditioner Pony Glam will wear off itself and not leave a ton of sparkles all over your horse’s hooves.

But, there’s more! Pony Glam also has a line of well made and comfortable T- Shirts with brightly colored, sassy statements on them that will have you prancing around the grocery store like a Show Pony (Yes, I am that cool!).

Brand Spotlight: Field & Field

I love having my big purse, but sometimes it’s just not feasible. When I’m running between riding at the farm, doing some errands, and God knows what else that happens in my life I don’t want to have to lug around my big bag all the time, when all I need is my phone and some cash. Field & Field has created that perfect little wristlet pouch for all your essentials while still adding the perfect classy and equestrian touch.

I love the smell of leather; every rider loves the smell of that new saddle that the saddle rep has sitting out in the sun. So when I opened my package from Field & Field, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it smelled like new saddles.

All the Field & Field pouches are actually made of recycled saddle leather and lined in bright and fun linen. The leather is sturdy enough to hold up to every day wear and tear but still fashionable enough that you can take it out in public.

Packaging like this makes you feel like your receiving a present!

All of the Field & Field pouches are made out of recycled saddle leather. How cool is that? You can carry around a bit of riding everywhere you go. My personal pouch is a Sadler,  and I love the deep red color and the fun yellow striped linen on the inside. The heavy duty brass zipper is a total plus because I’m always confident in the fact that it won’t break! All the pouches, including the Sadler come in various sizes and in cross body options. The cross body strap comes in a fun braided leather strap, that reminds me of braided reins!

Becoming a Working Student Will Change Your Life

Jenny Barnhard multi tasking at it's finest at Rolex! Jenny Barnhard multi tasking at it's finest at Rolex!

This week marks my two year anniversary as the right hand man of Kate Chadderton Eventing. It’s crazy to think that it’s been this long ! Everyone doubted the fact that a 14 year old, tiny, blonde child, with a lot to say would last very long around the Australians. But somehow I’ve managed to (Even though one of the vets still asks me every time they come to the farm  “You still haven’t been fired yet?”)!

Two years ago I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but thankfully I changed for the better! (Hopefully, anyway?) So for anyone looking into becoming a working student, or is going to be a working student, or is a working student, I would like to tell you guys about how this indentured servitude will improve not only your riding, but affect your entire life:

1. You will do everything quicker, and multi task

By everything, I mean everything. When you have to have two horses tacked up in under 10 minutes and you somehow manage to get it done, or a list of 500 things you need to do and pack before leaving to go south at 2 AM, you seem to never slow down. Add that to the fact that you can now eat, text, watch a movie, do home work, clean the house, watch the dogs, and 50 other things because your used to doing that many things at work and you suddenly have a whole 20 minutes of free time!

2. You will become a “Wrap Master” (Even better than Eminem)

Between polo wraps, standing wraps, and any other kind of wraps you can imagine your expected to do them all – perfectly, and quickly. If we ever showed up to an event and one of the horse’s standing wraps was too loose and falling down- I would not want to even think of the Aussie wrath I would be unleashing! (Note- Excessive amounts of polo wrapping will lead to better rapping)

3. You will master the art of sleeping in strange places

Not sure if this is better or worse to be honest. But I can pass out on the back seat of Kate’s truck with two dogs and a bunch of bags and have the best sleep ever. But, the down side  relates to our first trip to Aiken – where after 24 hours of straight no sleep I passed out in the trailer tack room on top of all the hay. Let’s just say I still haven’t lived that one down, and the fact that just about everyone has photos of me sleeping on their phones.

1898245_634035186632533_228208402_n

4. You will know everyone, and their dogs

You would think that it’s the riders that would know everything about everyone. But somehow the working students end up knowing it all. Maybe its because we’re silent bystanders, maybe its all the time we spend at the wash racks at events, who knows? But we just do!

10168142_10201904661314226_7636319894877436932_n

5. You will learn new languages

We’re not talking free enrollment into French classes over the summer, we’re talking full immersion in “Ringside Sign Language” (You know, the signs your rider or coach makes you when she’s on the phone, talking, or doing something where she can’t talk to you? I don’t know why they don’t offer it in High Schools!) and “Australian” (If you’re surrounded by them and you can’t figure out what they’re saying, or you cant win at a game of australian slang, you might as well consider your working student career over)

Watching over Kate as she schools Collection Pass at Rolex

6. You will become a master at Tetris

All the intense, late night, want to go to sleep because you have to wake up in two hours, packing sessions will make you adept for playing Tetris for the many car rides to events.

7. You will become more comfortable in uncomfortable situations

All those times you have to get your golf cart towed, ask some stranger for help, or beg someone to help you, will eventually make you a lot braver when it comes to dealing with things that before made you feel awkward.

8. The hack life will choose you

You will hack, and hack a lot.

So if you’re considering becoming a working student, don’t just think of the benefits to your riding, think of the every day benefits to your life!

Brand Spotlight: Annie’s Equestrienne Apparel

Rocking the Tiff-annie breeches Rocking the Tiff-annie breeches

So we wear riding clothes day in, and day out. Tan pants and navy polos seem to be the official equestrian uniform with the exception of a few different “natural” colors. But why do we limit ourselves? Why not have some fun with our breeches?

Annie’s Equestrienne Apparel originally started as a line of kids schooling apparel, featuring the brightly colored “Razzberry Sticky Bun Breeches” (Pink full seats in kids sizes). But soon the demand for more colors, and adult sizes sky rocketed the line. Now they feature both “Tiff-annie Blue” and “Tweety Bird Yellow” in a wide range of adult and childrens sizes? So why not give it a try?

The original Razzberry

The original Razzberry

With a flow of new products coming out, I had a hard time deciding what color breeches I wanted, but I settled with the “Tiff-annie Blue”. I’ll be honest, I squealed when they arrived. The breeches have the perfect form fitting, yet not too tight feel, and are light weight enough for summer! The full seat is a luxurious micro fiber which really helps me stick in the saddle on my rougher dressage schools. They might possibly be my new favorite breeches.

Post- dressage school with the awesome breeches!

In addition to breeches, Annie’s carries a wide range of children’s apparel- everything from polos and sweat shirts to homemade hoof oil and matching breeches for American Girl dolls. (Lucky they weren’t around when I played with mine!). I also have worn their new “Shim Shimmery Tee” and it looks great in the saddle and running out to do some errands, without being overtly horsey.

The perfect purse? Does it even exist? Everyone has their own take on a perfect purse that can go between the barn and social life (that is if you have one). But Tucker Tweed Equestrian has a range of awesome bags for every personality, outfit, and discipline.

slide4

The Tucker Tweed Manor Tote is their most popular bag, it’s large enough for everything from your wallet to your spurs, while still looking effortless . The littlest details like a Tucker Tweed leather tag and braided top make the biggest differences! The front is accented by a emblem of your choice; my personal favorite is the Hunter Jumper one (because who can get enough of horses jumping!). The color combinations range from black and brown, to bright red, and two color options.

The leather is super high quality and even has the “new leather” smell — when I think nobody is looking, you might catch me smelling it! Each product also comes with a satin dust cover, that I like to put mine in while I’m at the barn so it stays clean. The leather is soft and supple, and stays true to the original color.

Brand Spotlight: Tara Kiwi Designs

The Eventing Nation Brand Spotlight is a weekly article highlighting up and coming brands. If you know a brand that should be feautured please email: [email protected]

Hailing from the west coast is Tara Kiwi, a line of equestrian themed T-shirts with that certain west coast flair. Being from the East Coast I was totally in awe of the low key designs and pastel colors!

logo

The shirts are all 100% organic cotton- and super soft. With a range of styles and patterns there’s a shirt out there for just about anyone! Personally I think they’re the perfect shirt to throw on with some jeans for that competitions party you didn’t have time to go to the hotel and shower for (we’ve all been there!).

From the barn to dinner, still looking fashionable!

My Tara Kiwi shirt was the Show Pins in heather gray. The first thing I did when I got it was put it on. The fabrics are so light weight, they’re perfect for spring, and even though I found the patterns a little odd at first,  they quickly grew on me. It’s the perfect shirt to throw on to go get a quick bite to eat after being at the barn all day!

Le Fash

You know that awkward feeling you get when you need to go to the mall or just about anywhere but the barn in your riding clothes. I know I do! But now there’s Le Fash NY the “First ever cross over clothing brand suitable for competition and the New York fashion forward.”

Katherine Lambert, area 1 eventer sporting her Le Fash.

Katherine Lambert, area 1 eventer sporting her Le Fash.

You may have seen these awesome shirts and breeches on the popular hunter and jumper riders. But why can’t eventers get in on this awesome brand? The shirts are extremely breathable and made of bamboo with fashionable patterned or coloured plackets. They are attractive enough for everyday riding, clinics, shows, and look great! They also are perfect for all three disciplines of eventing, go well under your show jackets, and look great out on course! The shirts are also made of bamboo which makes them both soft, and good for the enviorment. They fit well to your body shape, without being too snug. They also stay tucked in while you ride, because we all know how annoying it is to be in the middle of your dressage test and notice your shirt is suddenly flapping in the wind.

large-1

Plus they have really attractive new “City Breech” with contrasting patches! They come in every colour from SoHo (white) to Financial District (grey), you have the choice of pocket rivets or without pocket rivets. These pants look great with a pair of flats or tall boots! And yeah, they may only have knee patches for right now, but in an attempt to branch out to more eventers and dressage riders full seat breeches will be out very soon! So what are you still doing reading this? Go get your Le Fash NY fix, and stop feeling awkward wearing breeches in public!

So we’ve all seen the infomercials for the negative ion bands. Some people have tried them, some people wonder about their validity and some wonder if they can stretch the band over their horse’s hoof for a more balanced canter in the dressage. While it may not be possible to stretch it that much, Mojo Futuretech has a solution!

The horse patches come in two types, removable velcro ones and ones that you glue to the bottom of your bridle or halter. The velcro ones are not approved by FEI for competition, but the glue on ones are.

IMG_2472

I had the pleasure to try out both the Mojo products over the winter. I was a bit skeptical at first but was very excited to see what kind of a difference they made in my horse and me. In my horse I first noticed that she was more supple but excited. In myself I found that I had an easier time waking up when wearing the Mojo wristband in the morning. I love using them , and wear them every day!

We all have our own well loved half pads (believe me, I have a few) But recently I broke down and got myself an Ogilvy memory foam half pad, and it truly has been life changing!

Rocking both my Ogilvy pads!

Rocking both my Ogilvy pads!

For those of you who know a thing or two about my horse Sasha, you probably know she’s crazy talented and crazy mareish. Every time I put a saddle on her, or tighten the girth she tries to bite me! My reasoning for ordering the Ogilvy was that they were

1)   Completely customizable, you can pick your cross country colours for the piping, binding, and even the main body of the pad!

2)   You can choose the size and thickness of your pad for a completely custom fit for your horse!

3)   It’s so simple to get a matching saddle pad!

4)   They’re super attractive

Fresh out of the box!

Fresh out of the box!

My opinion on my half pad when I got it was in the highest degree, Sasha is less girthy, doesn’t mind the saddle when she wears it, and in my opinion uses her back much better when she jumps! Just the other day I washed it for the first time, which is a lot simpler than washing your run of the mill sheepskin half pad! I just take out the removable memory foam pads and threw it in the washing machine with cold water, and then hung it out to dry! Good as new! They also are made of suede so you don’t even need keepers to keep it in place!

IMG_1832

Not too long after getting my half pad, I became an Ogilvy addict, and broke down and bought the profile pad. I got the piping and binding to match my half pad and was surprised when I received it! The pads are lined with a microfiber suede so that they don’t slip at all! The bridge of the saddle pad has no padding in it to allow it to sit flat on your horse’s back and not bunch up like a normal saddle pad!
