According to Akira Beijing, birdcatcher spots are the hot new fashion trend for the upcoming fall season. According to Akira Beijing, birdcatcher spots are the hot new fashion trend for the upcoming fall season.

Is it fall yet or are we all just so sick of summer that we’re kicking it off early?  I’m not 100 percent sure as I’ve started seeing pumpkin-flavored everything and Halloween decorations here and there, but no Count Chocula cereal yet. On the other hand, a beautiful flurry of emails reminding me about early season blanket sales has already started hitting my inbox, which means it must be getting cold somewhere.

Each email sets off another sleepless night where I wonder if one of the blankets therein will be THE ONE that finally doesn’t rub my pony’s shoulders. My mare has started to get a bit fluffy as the sun starts setting earlier and earlier. She’s also decided to sport some birdcatcher spots this year for some unknown reason.

Body clipping is becoming more and more tempting by the day, though I know it will be more satisfying the longer I wait. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to spend the next seven hours adding and removing blankets to my online shopping cart and being paralyzed with indecision.

So much to do and watch this weekend! From some local activities to the AECs and the action across the pond at Burghley, I’m not quite sure what to do with myself. There is a very good possibility that I won’t be leaving the computer since there is so much I’d like to keep up with. However, I have heard that some of my favorite food trucks will be showing up at Woodland Stallion Station and it’s hard to say no to food truck grub. Yum.

While Burghley cross country is being shown on a delay around the world (starting at 8 a.m. EST in the U.S.), Samantha Clark is live tweeting @eventingnation, and we have the live Twitter feed embedded right on the EN homepage so you can follow along.

Sometimes there’s so much going on it makes your head spin. My Facebook feed is filled with all sorts of awesomeness from around Eventerland. The awesomeness runs the gamut from new gear and new ponies to move-up preparations after a solid season. Some of my biggest smiles come from seeing the adventures of all of our West Coast favorites who have taken flight and gone across the pond for some fun. With any luck they’ll show the Europeans how we do it on the Best Coast.

Some late summer fun! Photo from Jennie Kreutzkamp Duke's Facebook page Some late summer fun! Photo from Jennie Kreutzkamp Duke's Facebook page

As I sit here listening to my neighbors engage in some weekend construction, I find myself all too aware that summer time is drawing to a close. All of the back to school commercials are in full effect, and I even saw my first Spirit Halloween Store a few days ago. As much as I love the cooler weather that fall brings, I hate the loss of all the freedom that summer time offers. This weekend is the perfect weekend to get out and enjoy it just a little longer. Before you know it we’ll all be bundled up in quarter sheets and long underwear. At least we have body clipping booty art to look forward to.

Yes, the eventing portion of the Olympics is over and we know how it shook out in the end. There is still plenty of dressage and show jumping to watch in the coming days, but I don’t think I will see anything that makes me smirk as much as Russian rider Andrey Mitin did. There’s some small comfort in knowing that we have to deal with many of the same #eventerproblems, like left over number-residue in our pinneys, around the world and at every level.

I have been tied to my phone for the better part of three days. If I’m not refreshing scores from Rebecca Farm, I’m in the middle of a flurry of texts back and forth about how all of my West Coast friends are doing in Big Sky Country. I’m certainly sad that I missed it this year, but there’s always the next one around. As they said on The Sort of OK Show About Horses with Buck and Kyle recently, Rebecca Farm just keeps getting bigger and better each year. One of these years I’ll don a maroon pinney myself and gallop through the canola fields.

Remember this gorgeous bit of artwork? It can be yours! Featuring Lauren Kieffer and painted by Lisa Curry Mair, it is being auctioned to benefit Brooke USA and their “Give a Donkey a Drink” campaign. This wonderful organization is the world’s largest international equine welfare charity that aids millions of working horses, donkeys and mules around the world.

Brooke USA’s project, “Buy a Donkey a Drink,” is raising support to construct five permanent water troughs in the Shala Woreda district of Ethiopia to ease the suffering of the 11,500 working horses, donkeys and mules in the region. This project will reduce the mortality rate of working equines in this area by an estimated 45 percent. This is just one example of Brooke USA’s extremely important work to help equines around the world. Now you can support the organization by bidding on Lauren Kieffer’s beautiful hand-painted Tucci boot. The painting, entitled “Patrick and Lauren at Rolex” depicts Lauren and Landmark’s Monte Carlo on their way to winning the Land Rover Ride of the Day at Rolex this year.  All proceeds from the auction will benefit Brooke USA. The auction ends August 6th and you can bid online. Get yourself some art and do a good deed in the process. [Auction Information]

Happy 14th Birthday to my funny little mare. There’s nothing quite like getting older with a horse that has seen you through the good times and the bad. While most of Team DF is off at Twin Rivers for a Combined Test and some last cross country schools before Rebecca Farm, I’ll be spending the morning sitting in the grass at the barn. Jing and I will have our usual mostly silent discussions about the number of cookies that remain in my pockets and then likely go for a trail ride before the sun becomes unbearable. Life has it’s ups and downs, but it’s nice to stop and celebrate once in a while – even if it’s quietly.

I love tack swaps. Shopping for that special find is always fun and they are a sporadic resource for my beloved rust breeches. I’m up to six pairs at last count, thank you very much. This weekend isn’t a tack swap, it is something much grander. It is Horse Expo weekend here in Northern California. Two years ago, fellow EN writer Stephanie Nicora, Hayley Sullivan and I had the good fortune to be demo riders for Gina Miles. It was a very unique experience — not quite a clinic and not entirely a performance either. This year’s clinicians really aren’t my style, but the shopping always is. Off to go in search of free samples galore, and probably some horse cookies as well. If you’re there and you see me in my EN polo shirt, say hi!

Hot. Brain melting. Words too hard. 105+ degrees. Send ice. Shade. Functional air-conditioning. Anything. In all seriousness, my air-conditioner died on the first truly scorching day of summer and it has been miserable. Fortunately, someone is on the way this afternoon to fix it. Better yet, the bar is open at Camelot Equestrian Park and they have Strawberry Daiquiris this year. Just another day at the office for Alliston Equestrian!

When it’s 92 degrees in the Sacramento Valley, what do eventers do? Head for The Spring Event at Woodside and the Preliminary Challenge! This year is shaping up to be a banner year for the event. Your overnight leaders in the Challenge Divisions are Ruth Bley aboard her own Rodrigue Du Granit in the Rider division with a 30.4 and Kimberly Steinbuch and En Vogue in the Horse division with a 28.6.

Both Ruth and Kimberly will have to bring their A-game tomorrow. Ruth is currently less than a point in front of Lauren Henry and CTR Stoney Creek and Delaney Vaden and RedRox Jazzman, who are tied for second on a dressage score of 31.3. In the Horse division, Kimberly will have to be especially accurate on the cross country course as she cannot afford a single penalty point. She maintains her lead over James Alliston by a mere tenth of a point. Yow! A very exciting weekend indeed.

Foal face off! Photo by William Micklem. Foal face off! Photo by William Micklem.

William Micklem sent in these lovely photos of foals born in the past month at Hartwell Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland, where Jackaroo and Cruising Encore, a clone of the legendary Cruising, both stand. “The black colt on the left is just three weeks old and the bay filly on the right just one week,” William said. “Little do these two exceptional traditional Irish foals realize that they belong to two of the best event horse families in the world.”

The colt is by Cruising Encore. Cruising needs no introduction, having sired top four-star horses like Mr. Medicott, Mr. Cruise Control and Harbour Pilot, as well as the Grand Prix jumping superstar Flexible. The filly is by Jackaroo, a full brother of Mandiba and High Kingdom. Even better, her dam is a three-fourths sister to Mr. Cruise Control. We’re excited to follow along with these two youngsters!

Today is going to be a long, hot day. It will be fun though – or at least that is what I’m planning on telling myself at 4:30am when my alarm goes off so that I can braid my BFF’s horse while she hooks up the trailer to head on over to Woodland Stallion Station. Today will also be a bit of a novelty. You see, we don’t have a whole lot of one days on the West Coast. Even though I originally hail from Hunter/Jumper land, where multiple rides in a day for multiple days in a row is de rigueur, I find that I’ve gotten rather used to the notion of “Ride Dressage on Friday, then drink heavily prepare for Cross Country”. Better pack an extra Red Bull or five.

Today should be an exciting day of show jumping! Michael Jung is absolutely DOMINATING the competition — we probably could have just handed him the watch as he finished that dressage test — however, it is worth pointing out that we might have someone with West Coast roots on the podium.

Even though Maya Black took off for the East Coast in January of 2014, she still hails from the Pacific Northwest and has a significant cheering section on this side of the country. One other West Coast ex-pat, Matt Brown, is in striking distance of the top 10 and positioned to finish as the top Rolex Rookie.

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for. CROSS COUNTRY DAY! Today is of my favorite days of the year. While it isn’t as grand as actually being at the Kentucky Horse Park to witness it live and hang out at the EN Tailgate Party, snuggling up in a blanket with some hot cocoa and a cat is a great way to spend a Saturday morning. I’ve already hooked my MacBook to my flat screen TV in anticipation of the morning’s activities.

It’s hard to believe but this time next week, we’ll be waiting with baited breath to see the best riders in the sport step in to the stadium to tackle the final phase of RK3DE 2016. It’s almost here, and that it will be gone in the blink of an eye. It’s always interesting to me to find out which phase is the most challenging mentally for other eventers.

Personally, I’m the most at ease in the show jumping ring. I was a jumper rider before I was an eventer, so show jumping day always feels like going home. As much as I love watching cross country, the tension that comes when horses and riders are tired and the rails threaten to come down at the lightest tap is my favorite. What about you?

And they’re off! Over the past few days Facebook has been starting to fill up with photos of trucks, trailers and even airplanes filled with horses bound for Rolex. Next weekend is sure to be an exciting weekend whether you are live in Lexington or simply joining us online.

I am planning on recreating my Rolex Viewing Station from last year, which means hooking up my MacBook Pro to the TV in my living room and parking myself there from Thursday onward. I just have to make a quick run for some snacks on Wednesday night and I’m all set. How will you be watching Rolex?

Lots of fabulous things are happening for Bec Braitling. In addition to her recent acquisition of Dinero, her other ride Great Bourton took home top honors in the Open Intermediate at Twin Rivers. The weather this weekend has been absolutely beautiful and it’s no secret that I’m super jealous of all the fun being had down at Twin Rivers Ranch. If I had any sense, I’d have driven down on Friday and stayed the weekend. Best wishes for good rides for those of you competing today.

One of the things that I love most about our sport and horses in general is that there’s always more to learn and do. Due to the sheer scope of the subject-that-is-horse, you can learn something new every single day and still not know everything at the end of your days. There’s also something very special about the work ethic that horses seem to instill in everyone that would call themselves a horse person. Eventing adds a certain scrappiness and a ‘get-it-done-whatever-the-challenge’ attitude to that work ethic. One of my favorite kids, Taylor McFall, is calling on that work ethic this weekend at Twin Rivers where you can find her cleaning stalls to raise funds for her show season with Kilbarry Prince.

I’m a Facebook addict. I’m waiting anxiously for all of the on-the-road-to-Rolex Facebook posts to start going up. I think that those posts are some of my favorite parts of the whole Rolex season, just after all of the entry-form photos. One of the other kinds of posts I absolutely love are the ones where we get to see superstars at rest, looking happy and well loved. I can’t lie, I’ve always been a fan of TS Jamaimo and to see him looking sharp after a winter makes me grin.
