Congratulations to California Chrome, 2014 Kentucky Derby Winner

The California sun must have traveled East to shine down on California Chrome this afternoon in Louisville. The chestnut colt stormed home to win the 140th Kentucky Derby with style, beating late-charging Commanding Curve. If you haven’t already caught up on the amazing backstory of this horse from humble beginnings, be sure to read up on Bleacher Report here.

It was certainly a legitimate field in the starting gate today, and after battling his way through the early going to settle into a good position under jockey Victor Espinoza, California Chrome easily took command at the top of the stretch and never looked back. California Chrome dealt with a bit of traffic in the Santa Anita Derby earlier this year, which really made him stand out for me in a race that requires the winning horse to have as good of a trip as possible.

Are we looking at a Triple Crown contender, EN? I think this California-bred looks pretty threatening personally. Congratulations to Chrome and all of his connections!
