- A foldable chair: Some venues allow you to take your car on course, depending on the weather and footing conditions, but some prefer not to risk damage to the course. Mum uses an Ariat chair I acquired at the AEC one year; she calls it her $10,000 chair.
- Sunscreen: I left Foxhall one year with very badly burned legs, and then got sent home from school the next day because the shorts I wore were "too short." Moral? Bring sunscreen or you'll get to stay home from school.
- A book: There can be significant downtime between levels while judges reposition. Reading material is fine, but an iPod may cause you to miss important information over the radio.
- Water and snacks: Many venues provide these sporadically throughout the day. Bring some of your own just in case.
- Trash bag: Because you don't want to be a litterbug
- Toilet Paper: Breaks and bathrooms can be few and far between on course. You get it...
- A Watch: You may need to time any odd occurrences like holds on course
- Foul-weather gear: The weatherman never gets it right on horse show weekends. Be prepared for changes in temperatures or sudden rainstorms. And remember to dress in layers!
- Muck boots or Wellies: Helpful for wet weather or assisting soaked riders out of the water jump
- Cell Phone on Vibrate: Don't be that guy who's cell phone goes off mid approach to a maxed-out combination.
- Bug Spray: It only takes one bad day in the bushes, and you'll never forget bug spray again.
EN Says Thanks to Volunteers
Those cross-country judge briefings are often before many of the competitors ever get there!
And the folks at the concession stands! Very important people..
The 2010 World Equestrian Games taking place Sept 25th until October 10th still need thousands of volunteers. Find out how you can help and be a part of this historic event at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington at www.alltechfeigames.com/volunteer
Hey Samantha, I was going to link to the WEGs recent presser about needing volunteers in our next N&N post, but thanks for beating me to the punch! I know that there are a lot of people who have been frustrated with the volunteer registration process due to glitches in the system and a lack of response from the WEGs. But, organizing thousands of volunteers is extremely tough, and I think they are finally getting the system organized. I ditto the suggestion to volunteer; it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Good to hear from you Samantha, keep in touch.
Wow! Good stuff. A great thing about eventing. Did you know that eventers like Karen O'Connor, Stephen Bradley, and many more annually VOLUNTEER at a special three day event in Maryland in October? Guess the event, and what they all do at this event! (And this year will be Karen O'Connors fifth or six year!)
Hey Retreadeventer, I believe that you are talking about the Waredaca T3DE, and the riders volunteer to help educate the competitors throughout the event. I know this because we had an interview with one of this year's winners, DC McBroom, where we wrote about the great contributions from upper-level riders. Thanks for the quiz!

I would like to echo Leslie's sentiment and say THANK YOU!! to all the wonderful volunteers out there. Without them, our sport would cease to exist.
There is so much behind the scenes that we don't always see or appreciate... do you ever think of who keeps the toilet paper stocked in the port-o-potties? And how about those amazing, rugged individuals who braved the elements at Fair Hill a few months ago? Hats off to all of you who dedicate your time out of the saddle; you put in the hours so that others can have a precious few minutes of joy. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
