A 14 Year Old Eventing Hero

Grace Pilkington, and her mother Deborah were driving in New Hampshire on their way to the Area I young rider eventing camp at GMHA on Sunday afternoon with their horse Hershey in a bumper pull trailer when they noticed what looked like smoke coming from the trailer.  The smoke was actually steam coming from a water cooler that had caught fire.  Deborah and Grace quickly parked the trailer on the side of the highway and they rushed back to the trailer to find that the front of the trailer was on fire.  Grace, just 14 years old, rushed into the burning trailer and guided Hershey out with Deborah helping from behind.  8 foot high flames soon engulfed the trailer, but neither Grace nor Deborah was injured and Hershey escaped with just a singed fetlock thanks to Grace’s heroism.

As is often the case with heroic moments, Grace told the Nashua Telegraph newspaper “I wasn’t really thinking.”  She just wanted to save her horse.  Hershey spent Sunday night at the farm of an off-duty Nashua County Fire Rescue lieutenant.  Deborah and Grace were struck by the kindness of everyone involved, including around 15 drivers who stopped to help and a local veterinarian who checked Hershey for injuries.  The fire fighters reportedly stopped traffic on the highway to let Hershey graze in the median.

On Monday, Grace, Hershey, and Deborah continued on to the GMHA young rides camp, although Hershey will get the week off.  Grace and Hershey finished 5th at the Fitch’s Corner Area I novice championship last week.  Deborah said that she has nicknamed Grace “Boyd Martin” for her decision to run into the burning trailer to save Hershey.

Thanks to EN tipster Jess for the heads up. Have a great week at camp Grace and we look forward to seeing Hershey back out eventing soon.  Go eventing.

What a brave and selfless young lady!

What kind of water cooler catches fire?

  • Polly

Holy COW!! Good job, Grace! That trailer is a SIGHT! What a horror. Glad you guys are all OK. Yikes..........

  • Christine

What an inspirational story. Great job Grace. You are clearly on your way to becoming an amazing young woman!! Give Hershey an extra treat for me!!

  • Lacy

This story gets down under my skin, makes me a bit misty eyed. I know for certain that many of us horse people would do exactly as this brave young woman did, because our horses are like our children and there's nothing we wouldn't do to keep them safe.

My only note is that if I had attempted such a heroic feat with my own mother nearby, I'm pretty sure she would have tackled me to the ground rather than let me run into a burning trailer. She loves my horse, but I'm not sure she would agree that his life is worth my own. Alas, she's a mom.

Wow! Thank goodness they thought and acted so quickly and bravely! Amazing what horsemanship causes in terms of great responses! Can you share info on how the cooler caught fire to help others who may have a similar catastrophe?

  • Sandy

Grace, it is so impressive that you kept your head in that situation and got Hersey
out! I was so relieved to hear everyone was fine.
Two more details that John left out - the firefighters actually stopped traffic so Hersey could graze in the median while they waited for another trailer to come and get him. That's just cool.
And, the "local" vet who was driving by?!!! Mary Kahan! I don't believe in these things, really I don't but there was an angel there yesterday. If I had had that happen to me and my daughters and any of our horses, Mary would have been top of my list to happen to be driving by.

  • Polly

How can Mary be EVERYWHERE at once??????????????? She is amazing. That actually cracks me up. Good grief. This story gets better and better.

  • Melissa S

I don't think the water cooler was the source of the fire....it was just the source of the steam/smoke that they saw as the trailer was burning. Any number of things can cause a trailer to catch fire. One is road debrie that gets stuck where it shouldn't. Very scary...glad it had a happy ending!!!

  • Sandy

I agree Polly, the thought that Mary happened to be driving by made me laugh. I was also emotional about the whole idea, Thoroughbred Love, but it ends up being head-shaking story of how wonderful people really are and how quick thinking
and acting can make such a difference. Nashua NH must really be the best city in the country to live!

I have a few friends that are at the GMHA camp and they sent a message saying both girl and horse arrived at GMHA and are doing great!!! Yah.

  • Megan M

I have to admit, that made tears stream down my face. Thank goodness they're both okay! Three cheers for a quick-thinking kid who kept her cool in an emergency!

  • Deborah, Grace’s mom

The battery to power the pump for the water cooler and spray system apparently malfunctioned and overheated which caused the water cooler to melt down. If anyone has a battery in the interior of their trailer, I suggest you have it removed. The pump and spray hose were nice but not worth the risk of having a battery inside the trailer.
