AEC Advanced Cross Country Course Preview

The first water complex on course. The first water complex on course.

AEC week is finally here! The Texas Rose Horse Park was already bustling with activity in preparation for the weekend when I arrived yesterday, and competition officially kicks off today with the Training, Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced dressage. Stay tuned all weekend for updates from the Intermediate and Advanced all weekend, as well as any other divisions I can squeeze in.

Capt. Mark Phillips’ Advanced cross country course is definitely looking up to speed for a championship level course. The terrain here definitely needs to be taken seriously, and Capt. Phillips has integrated the course into the undulating hills here at the Texas Rose Horse Park

If I had to pick one word to describe this year’s Advanced course, it would be “twisty.” Debbie Rosen commented that the course is definitely a “rider’s course” in that it demands accuracy and has a lot of “land and turn” questions throughout.

Spectators will want to camp out at the first water complex, fences 12ABC and 13, which is a new addition for this year’s course. It’s quite an interesting looking complex, with a table leading into the water, four strides to a vertical brush, five to a rather steep bank and over another brush vertical, followed by another table, which rides at an angled four strides.

Stay tuned for much more from the AECs, and click here to see all of EN’s coverage so far.
