George Morris’s News and Notes from FLAIR

Haven’t you people heard one lousy, dadgum thing I’ve been telling you for the last 50 years? [Photo from ChicagoEquestrian.blogspot.com]

God bless George Morris. You’ve gotta love that guy. He’s probably the crotchetiest, most cantankerous trainer in all of North America, but you’ve got to hand it to him–he’s earned the right. Here are some of my favorite Chuck Norris George Morris jokes:

George Morris can lead a horse to water AND make it drink.

George Morris won the Maclay Medal Finals, on a unicorn.

George Morris once uppercut a horse. That horse is now a giraffe.

George Morris is not hung like a horse… horses are hung like George Morris.

Well stock up on popcorn, kids, because Uncle George is coming to a laptop screen near you. That’s right, America’s hunt-seat legend is older and crankier than ever, and he’s ready to open a can of whoop-ass on the young’uns at next week’s George H. Morris Horsemastership Training Session. And–wait for it–the USEF Network is going to broadcast the morning riding sessions live. Nuggets of training genius drenched in the thinly-veiled anger of a man who doesn’t understand why people are still riding badly after all these years–now that’s entertainment!

The training sessions take place from Jan. 3-8 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington. Videos of last year’s sessions, which contain priceless gems like George screaming “See-sawing the reins is GARBAGE!” and his classic refrain of “Sloppy! Sloppy!! SLOPPY!!!,” are still available online if you want to pre-party this weekend. [USEF Network]

Not much else happening in the horse world, but I’ll recap the highlights:

Hockey! Bacon! Helmets! That’s right–Canada is a leader in many things, and safe dressage headgear is now officially among them. Safety helmets will become mandatory for all levels of dressage in Canada beginning January 1, 2012. “I believe we are the first national federation to introduce this rule across all levels,” said Equine Canada president Michael Gallagher, “and I can guarantee we will not be the last, eh.” (He didn’t actually say “eh.” I edited that part in.) [H&H]

Ex-racehorses in New York may soon have something to look forward post-retirement–and it’s not bingo or water aerobics. The New York State Task Force on Retired Racehorses suggested that .5 percent of revenue generated from video lottery terminals, along with .5 percent of purse earnings, help fund the rehabilitation and re-training of ex-racehorses. [COTH]

On Christmas day in Scotland, a horse named Herbie got stuck in a bog. Firefighters came to the rescue and, a few friction burns aside, Herbie emerged from the muck as good as new. “He got his Christmas Day treat of parsnips as well as a bath to wash off the mud,” said the owner. Charming. [Horsetalk]

On a vaguely related note, a Maryland eventer-blogger discovers an artifact that reminds her of a nosedive she and her horse took earlier this year… into a sinkhole. On course. At an event. Horse-eating cross-country courses, colic scares–here’s sending some EN karma for 2012 your way, Abby. You’ve earned it. [Sandpiper Diary]

As for the rest of you: You didn’t ask for it, and you probably don’t want it, but we’re gonna give it to you anyway.

Whether #4 was made up by you or is an old saying in equestrian circles, it is crude and not typical of EN..... Go to urban dictionary if for some reason you don't know this. And this is true even if GM is known to say it..... Posting was a mistake - low class. And especially if poster is a woman.

  • Dying laughing…

As an ex-Hunter rider this had me in stitches-great post.

  • Excited

Can't wait for the live stream. Great post.

  • Erin

You guys are killing me right now. Wylie, my hat's off to you.

  • Anon in AUS

Canada is not the first National Federation to isist on safety helmets at all levels (but kudos for doing so). AUS did so for a moment in 2005 or 6 (ish?) when its insurance company insisted. I was a bit crapped off since I had bought a lovely navy Christies top hat and could not wear it for a while. These days, I'm happy to wear a helmet every time I ride.

Buzz- what in the world are you talking about?

  • Anonymous

Buzz was referring to the last George Morris joke. #4.

I have to agree. That is something I never wanted to think about, joke or no joke. Atypical for EN to post that sort of thing.

  • Sophie AUS

The helmets also have to have a little red sticker on them( forgot what it was called) but you cannot compete if your helmet dosent have on e and that has always applied to competition, Adult Riding Club and Pony Club.

  • Awesome

Best news and notes post in a long time!

  • Julia

Hilarious! I loved watching the live stream GM did last year and I'm so happy that USEF is broadcasting it again.

  • Mary

the cranky photo of GM and the horse obviously showing some sort of resistance in the background is pure gold!

  • LL

some people are way too sensitive.

  • John

Hey Buzz, I appreciate your comment and we are always looking to strike that balance between challenging and appropriate for all readers. As the moderator on EN, I can tell you that such a balance is not nearly as easy to find as it seems. I read through Leslie's post before it published so if we made such a mistake it's on me. My opinion was that 1) it was funny, 2) having met George there's no way I could ever imagine him being offended, and 3) I've seen/heard much worse in PG-13 movies. That being said, as you remarked, we don't make a habit of commenting on such things.

  • Buzz

I am in no way too sensitive. If you would be proud and thrilled for a 12 year old girl who reads this page to read that comment and then ask you what it means as her mother - then I guess civility is indeed dead. I can joke like that too - and I agree that EN can post what they like - but I am just saying that it is like a rehearsal dinner toast gone bad to state it in this public forum where John has always monitored inappropriate comments with amazing skill. It is not the joke but the audience / forum....

  • Sophie AUS

I agree with Buzz. And that article below, it wasn't me twice. I'd watch what you type.

  • Sophie AUS

On a better note, thank you EN for supplying such an entertaining and hilarious part to my day!

You are the most annoying poster on here, even moreso than the person posting all the Ugg crap. Even John has had words with you. Don't threaten me, I can type whateer I want, just as you can (to everyone's dismay).

  • LL

If a 12 year old understands that joke, then something else is wrong. When I was 12 that would have gone over my head, and is therefore not a big deal. John and his team work hard to provide us with both information and entertainment; people need to get off their backs.

  • DH

I was taken aback when I read #4 as well. I thought it out of character for EN and inappropriate. The rest of it was funny, but definitely a lack of judgement there.

Great for Canada, I just don't understand hunt caps! Doesn't it present all the bads of helmets, i.e. bad hair, hot head?, but no protection. I don't get it...

  • NLM

Lighten up! Life is a lot more fun if you can just relax a little, sometimes. I, personally, thought this whole piece was priceless!

  • Elaine

Way too sensitive. Completely harmless and hilarious post. If you think your 12 year old horse carzy pre-teen doesn't get that joke you're incredibly naive. I wouldn't expect or want this website to be rated for a pre-schooler.

  • JAS

Great post, I have seen or heard a lot worse on prime time TV. Keep up the great work and don't change the way you post on your site EN.

  • Sophie AUS

    Go EN!

(eye roll) Speak for your self.

Thank you to everybody that enjoyed this article and politely acknowledged (if at all) that it didn't make sense or that was crude.

John can you please close the comments to this, as it is getting too out of hand.

    Well, that's made my day!
