Popping the Question at Rolex

Maggie Giffin volunteered to work at Rolex as a crossing guard with her boyfriend, Dean Moffett, with no expectation for what the weekend would yield. Cross country day was spent as usual, managing crowds and ensuring the horses had a clear galloping path at all times. It wasn’t until after competition had ended for the day when Maggie received the surprise of her life.

“We’d been dating for about a year and a half, having met through mutual friends and finding out that we were both equestrians,” said Dean in a phone interview. “We decided to volunteer at Rolex, and when I found out that her mother would be coming up from Florida to volunteer as well, I thought it would be a good time to ask her permission and pop the question.”

After the last horse had gone by, Dean asked Maggie to take some photos in front of fence 2, to which Maggie agreed. “I asked her if she’d spend the rest of her life with me, and also if she would go to every Rolex with me for the rest of our lives,” Dean said of his proposal.

Maggie, who had no idea the proposal was coming, said that she was thrilled with how well Dean planned everything. “He really came up with everything on his own, and he totally surprised me because we’d been out all day in the sun,” Maggie said. “We took some pictures, and before the last one he got down on one knee and I was like, ‘what are you doing?’ It was really sweet, though, because he gave me his great-grandmother’s ring, which is a family heirloom.”

Maggie and Dean have begun looking at different sites to host their wedding, but are really considering approaching Kentucky Horse Park to find out if having the wedding there would be an option. “Rolex is my favorite event, and we both love horses, so it would just be perfect,” Maggie said. “It really just works out, though, because I didn’t want a normal, cliche proposal, so he couldn’t have done a better job.”
