The Sunday Jog-Up: Tips from a Groom

Half-draft plodder! If this wasn't such a great article, I would take offense! Great summary on studding.

Thanks for all the pictures! It is so nice to pair the explanation with them. Makes so much more sense that way!

Visionaire, I am going to pull my horse's tail soon. I always wanted to but thought it would be too hard until I read that article you did. I will definitely do a before and after picture!

My farrier recommend a dental pick to take out plugs and help clean stud holes, it is s wonderful tool to have! I ran cross country today and 6/8 of my plugs had fallen out..so not fun to deal with. If my horse hasn't been out in a while, I typically clean and replace plugs the day before I leave for the show so things go smoothly before xc.

Great article. I love how in the beginning you state that every horse is different and you have to basically do trial and error with the horse.
Anyway, you forgot another set of studs. The hex type of road studs. My whatever-maybe some draft-we think standardbred-Amish-reject loves the wider face of a hex type of road stud up front and then ones with the grass type of tip in the back. He's very sure footed and with big feet and a flatter mover. He does not like 'sticking'.
Also, if your horse has an extravagant front end type of jump (knees up to the ears), you will almost think understudding him up front. If you think you'll need a med. grass tip, go to a small grass tip. They need to 'move' a bit on landing.

Can we have a jog up about the riders? Especially *ahem* the long haird girls like myself who cant ever get our hair to stay up in the helmet? boot cleaning tips etc? i think that would be too cool! :) I dont event so GO RIDING! lol :D

Great explanation on how to stud. Easy to understand and the pictures are very helpful. One suggestion for future topics (because this is a huge pet peeve of mine) is how to properly fit tack and maybe why someone would use a hunt breastplate instead of a jumper breastplate or a figure 8 vs a flash, etc.

Yay for the return of the Sunday jog up!

Great article on studs. I've started using the self-tapping studs (called Pop Studs) and think they are worth the extra money. They have three grooves that clean the threads as they screw in. I've found that with the pop studs most times it's not necessary to tap the holes before putting the studs in.

How about a jog up on turn out to trailer? From shipping boots, leg wraps, tail wraps, head bumpers, and antisweat sheets to proper tying of lead ropes and hay nets, how long is too long on a trailer, proper health cert. for out of state, etc, etc. I can think of so many things involved!!

Are there any tips for putting hair up under your helmet?? I can never seem to make it look nice!

  • Metal Coating

How does the metal coating hold up for the horses?

This may be off-topic, but how about changing the theme once in a while? Maybe not if it won’t look right, but I just get tired of seeing the same layout all the time. My own computer has about 50 background pics that randomly rotate every 15 minutes, lol. Good post though, thanks.

Accept-Language is not just a list of coequal values; it’s rather a list of weighted values where each value can have a quality value that specifies the preference by a value between 0 and 1. That means just because of the occurrence of one particular value doesn’t mean that this value is the most preferred one. In fact, a quality value of 0 means “not acceptable at all”.
