USEF Announces New Eventing High Performance Training Lists

The USEF has released their winter training lists this afternoon.  4 pairs have been named to the A list and 19 pairs have been named to the B list.  There are definitely some interesting inclusions and omissions, so let’s jump right in:

A List:

Phillip Dutton and Mighty Nice

Sinead Halpin and Manoir de Carnville

Boyd Martin and Neville Bardos

Boyd Martin and Otis Barbotiere

B List:

Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot

Jan Byyny and Inmidair

Will Coleman and Twizzel

Tiana Coudray and Ringwood Magister

Buck Davidson and Absolute Liberty

Buck Davidson and Ballynoe Castle RM

Buck Davidson and The Apprentice

Phillip Dutton and William Penn

Phillip Dutton and Ben

Will Faudree and Pawlow

Will Faudree and Fernhill Gloster Rebel

Becky Holder and Can’t Fire Me

Shannon Lilley and Ballingowan Pizazz

Marilyn Little-Meredith and RF Rovano Rex

Boyd Martin and Ying Yang Yo

Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen

Karen O’Connor and Mr. Medicott

Julian Stiller and Chapel Amble

Jolie Wentworth and Good Knight

The two new horses needing special note are of course Mr. Medicott and Fernhill Gloster Rebel.  We reported on Thursday that the sale of Mr. Medicott was nearly final.  The USEF press release lists “The O’Connor Equestrian Syndicate” as owning Mr. Medicott and it’s fair to say that if the USEF was willing to send out a release naming Mr. Medicott to the B List that the deal is certain if not already 100% done.

Fernhill Gloster Rebel is a 10 year old gelding that Jennifer Mosing has purchased from Carol Gee for Will Faudree.  The horse was previously ridden by Duarte Seabra of Portugal.  He competed at the 2010 WEGs, withdrawing before the show jumping, and finished 51st at Badminton this year.  The horse arrived in the US on the 9th.  I spoke with Will late last week about the purchase and we’ll have much more on this nice new horse soon.

Mr Medicott is certainly sold, all done & dusted!!. Interesting to not see Charley Weld on the list with Jules!

  • lec

Does that say something that a partnership which has not yet jumped a single xc jump in a competitive environment manages to get on the list? What does that say to hard working riders who spend hours slogging away to get good results?

  • Anyonomus

It is just insane that Colleen Rutledge and Shiraz did not make the list!!! I geuss it is who you know not what you have done in the USEF . So crazy!!!

  • Katie

Agreed. Shiraz ia very solid over the jumps and there's time to work on his flatwork. I'd love to know the reasoning.

  • VicariousRider

Well, the Martins must be pretty thrilled between Boyd having 3 on this list and Silva and Asthete being named to the Developing List for dressage. Talk about a power couple!

  • Anyonomous

Lets see with Shiraz had a 12th place at Rolex this spring and a 37th out of 80 competitors at Burghley this summer. So does'nt make sense

  • Chris

Um. The list never makes sense. Time to stop expecting it to.

  • Liz

What about HSB and St. Barths?

  • anonymous

Interesting list, No KOC on Quintus 54 or Veronica but listed on a horse she hasn't ridden
HSB and St Bart's have not been seen since Rolex
Also interesting that Michael Pollard does not appear on either list

  • Maryann

I think it is interesting to go back to the previous list (thanks for the link, John) and see the lack fo riders on the Developing Riders list who converted to the actual training lists (A or B).

Also agree that it is RIDICULOUS not to see Colleen Rutledge anywhere.

  • Anonymous

Honestly folks, which one of you would seriously leave off Mr. Medicott? Even the Brits with their depth would recognize the value of that horse's experience had he been sold on there. And yes, Colleen and Shiraz should have been at least on the B list.

  • jim

I heard a rumor Colleen is going to England in the spring for anothe B named 4* and I hope her Dressage is so much better that she kicks a%* and proves all these selectors wrong.

  • Katie

Mike Pollard hasn't had a stellar record this year. Many more starts than completions.

  • Elaine

Glad to see tiana coudray back on the list. Also happy be Shannon Lilly representing the west coast. It shows what can happen if someone unexpected gets a shot. She's made the most of her opportunity.

It is very interesting that MLM and julian stiller are on the list yet Colleen is not. Perhaps she's better off being off the radar because it it would be worse to be jerked around for the next year, told where and when to compete and then not get on the team. This way they can go and do an awesome job at badminton and not stress about the Olympics.

Did I miss news abou Remington? Is he ok?

  • JAS

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be on a list with a horse I haven't competed!!! Talk about a jinx!

The lists are usually quite humorous. too bad it doesn't have each pair's record for the last 12 months next to each pair. Excluding those who haven't competed yet of course!

  • 4UFLY

Not a stellar year??? Did u not see the Pan Ams????

  • JAS

Pan Ams were a 2 star; big difference between a 2* and olympics

  • Katie

I did. I also "saw" the European events where Mike was entered. I repeat, not stellar. Mike has a ton of talent and rides lovely horses. I'm sure he'll be at the top of the heap eventually, but I don't think it's his time yet. Just an opinion!

  • JAS

Another interesting fact; only 12 US eventers have won an individual Olympic medal since 1912, 2 belong to current upper level riders, Kim Severson and Gina Miles. Neither has a prospective London mount.

  • Sarah

It is unbelievable to me that Kim is not in the mix. I guess she doesn't kiss sponsor ass as well as she is expected to.

  • Alex

Kim doesn't have an upper level horse right now

  • gopackgo

I'm a little shocked not to see Emily Beshear on the B list...she had 2 great CCI3* finishes and several top advanced finishes...

im also surprised hannah wasnt named with Nike in addition to willy...

im also stuck wondering as to why the US doesnt jump on the "bandwagon" of putting down just rider names versus rider names and horses. It makes no sense to have buck and boyd on there so many times! (i mean it does because they have so many horses but i hope you get what i mean!)

  • Sophie AUS

Wow Boyd is on there 3 times!!!~

  • 859

Why Colleen isn't on the list: The USEF likes to be in the medals after dressage more than they like actually BRINGING MEDALS HOME!

  • ???

Is there no developing riders list?

  • Mary

If Michael Pollard is left off because the Pan Ams were a 2 star, why are Shannon and Hannah on there? Those aren't proven advanced horses...

  • Julie

While it was certainly nice to win the team gold at the Pan Am Games, the Pan Ams are seriously a case of "Big Fish in a Little Pond" syndrome.

The Pan Am Games were downgraded to a two star competition which is basically a championship Intermediate Division and the only real competition was Canada, since the Latin American countries are not exactly eventing power houses.

Again, nice to win, and it was great that the U.S. actually sent a group of horses and riders that were ready and needed the experience but it has very little bearing on our international prowess heading into an Olympic Year.

  • JAS

    Precisely.

  • EM

Putting a rider/horse on the list who has not proven themselves as a team is a true shame.

  • Sara KY

Very poor Remmington did not get listed. He is the most consistent three day event horse out there. He is also the cutest.

  • Jill

For all the griping about who did and who did not make the lists and why, let's congratulate those who did!! So proud of my personal favorite Sinead and Tate! Keep it up!

  • Megan

    Wish them all the best.

Anyone else notice that Becky Holder's horse is the only American TB on the list?

  • Curious

Can anyone please list who is behind the selections / who specifically the selector(s) are?

  • Mayadinya Farm

Kudos to all the riders and horses who made the list.

I'm with Curious -- I'd love to know more about how pairs are selected, and by whom. I imagine most people would, in fact.

I think Fernhill Gloster Rebel could be brilliant for us. Duarte Seabra, who rode him for Carol Gee, is very good but still quite new to the upper levels, so he is riding a bit conservatively. He rode FGR around the WEG XC slowly but carefully, and the horse looked really nice. It seems that he withdrew before SJ because the horse got sliced scraping over a corner. Anyway, it's good for the US that the horse will be here, and I guess he and Will are a promising pair worth testing and training to see if they can represent us well internationally.

British based is Ann Taylor (she does not have a vote)

I heard that rumor too about Colleen and know she has been working hard on her flat. She is a strong rider and finances her passion mostly through family and friends. She deserves this communities support! Go Colleen and Shiraz, can't beat their jumping!

  • L

Surprised Remmy isn't on the list. Thought Buck would be in the A list too.

Kim only has youngsters she's working with at the moment, don't worry - she'll be around for the next round of the games lol.
