John Nicholson, Kentucky Horse Park’s Executive Director

For 16 days last autumn all equestrian eyes, along with many others, were trained on the Kentucky Horse Park to watch the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, held in North America for the very first time. This was something of a dream come true for Horse Park Executive Director John Nicholson, who had fostered the idea since the mid ’90’s. John has a long and rich history in Kentucky, and has been closely involved with the Horse Park for most of his career.  He must surely be proud now as he reflects on the Park’s triumphant 2010 and looks forward to an exciting future.

Whether there’s another World Games at the Horse Park or not, it will certainly reap the benefits of the facilities and improvements that were made for generations to come.
John is a keen walker, I’ve often bumped into him taking rounds of the Park, and he admits that he’s loath to leave his “village”, that even a trip to the supermarket is a big deal, so we were two of many fans of the aptly named Legacy Trail.
I’ve been lucky enough to have been invited to lunch a couple of times at The Farmhouse, which has been on the Horse Park for a few years now, but I sadly never made it to any of the Celebrity Chef Dinners held there during the Games, nor have I managed to find anyone who did, please write in and let us know what they were like if you’re one of the lucky ones! John has lots more innovative ideas for the Park, in fact even more exciting there’s nothing he won’t consider within reason, which seems like a wonderful attitude.
I’d like to extend a “thank you” and also a “get well soon” to John Nicholson, who spared me time out of his busy day despite a streaming cold, and to everyone at the Horse Park who keeps it running so seamlessly and efficiently. It is definitely one of the jewels in Kentucky’s crown, and I think it’s in good hands.
