Whether you’re planning one of the biggest horse shows in the world or a regional horse trial, it somehow seems to take the same number of selfless hands. Gate stewards, jump judges, timers, swag sellers, rakers, and scribes. The more experience I gain as an event organizer, the more delighted and inspired I am by the variety of volunteers who show up to take part. Some of my favorites are the women who say they’re too old to event anymore, but love the thrill of giving other people that opportunity. There’s a win-win-win in an event for organizers, riders, and volunteers that gives me hope for humanity.
