Apparently Virginia has decided to just skip the spring season and go right into boiling hot summer this year. Last week I was freezing my butt off and wearing three jackets at once, and this week its 80 degrees and I’m sunburnt everywhere. Cool, Mother Nature, it’s not like we appreciate moderation or anything.

Interested in competing your horse in Future Event Horse competitions this year? It’s good to know what kind of things your horse will be asked to do, so you can come prepared. The free jumping aspect of the competition can be especially challenging, particularly with babies! This video from the USEA is an excellent introduction to free jumping, and shows the exact combination and setup for a free jumping schooling session. [FEH Free Jumping Introduction]

We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Coleen Hersson, a lifelong horse enthusiast and the organizer of CDCTA Horse Trials for the past 20 years. Coleen Keenan-Hersson, 63, of Rixeyville, VA, died peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2016, with her family at her side in Charlottesville, Virginia. She dedicated her life to  family, horse community friends, horses and loving dogs (giant schnauzers). Throwback Thursday: let’s watch the 1948 Olympic Show Jumping team in training! The U.S. show jumping team for the 1948 Olympic Games was the last military Olympic team fielded. Col. Frank Wing rode the famous U.S. team mount Democrat, Capt. John Russell rode Air Mail, and Col. Andrew Frierson rode Rascal. The Chronicle has the awesome video. [COTH TBT]

KER Product of the Week – EquiShure®

When high concentrations of fructans are found in pasture, or large grain meals are fed, horses ferment these highly fermentable carbohydrate “sugars” in the hindgut, setting the stage for hindgut acidosis and potentially resulting in laminitis and colic.

EquiShure® is a research-proven time-released buffer that helps moderate gut conditions by preventing the drastic drop in pH associated with high lactate production. Choose EquiShure to help reduce the risk of hindgut acidosis escalating to laminitis in horses grazing high-fructan pastures or receiving significant intakes of starch-laden grains, including those at risk for or with a history of laminitis. Learn more and read the research.
