Today is the first day of summer! I’m celebrating with some early morning cross country schooling, followed by some heavily predicted summer thunderstorms. Also, to be fair, there will probably be some low key sunburn, lots of gatorade, and a pile of sweaty riding clothes. Honestly, if this doesn’t define summer, what does?

News From Around the Globe:

With safety for horses and riders at the forefront of the sport, the USEA is holding an online auction to raise money for more research.  Funds are required to purchase the pins, clips, weights, and other equipment required for this testing with the ultimate goal of making this system available to all course builders. You can find lots of cool things on this auction, including a vacation in Crested Butte, a cross country corner of your own, and even a cross-country flight for your horse. While Tom Crisp was competing at Luhmuhlen, a fire ripped through his stables. Starting around 11 p.m. on Saturday, the fire wiped out an entire top yard of nine stables, a hay barn, tack and feed rooms, workshop and a coach house. Luckily no horses were in the barns, and no humans were hurt either. Tom thinks that it was caused by careless cigarette smoking, but doesn’t have CCTV to show anything ominous. We’re always trying to help our horses improve their gaits for dressage, whether it’s through limbering exercises, body work, or cross training. In this Eventing Training Online video, Jane Bartle-Wilson a rider on how to use travers and shoulder-in to improve the quality of her horse’s gaits. Bartle-Wilson explains how the horse’s head should be looking straight in travers and has the rider perform a circle before entering into travers to improve the horse’s body position.
