While Yvette Seger pointed out this morning that Waredaca narrowly missed Hurricane Sandy, many of you were worried about how the storm will impact this weekend’s Virginia Horse Trials. I checked in with Brian and Penny Ross just as Brian was headed out to walk the cross-country course this morning. I am very pleased to report that the grounds are relatively unscathed and the horse trials will go on!
From Penny:
“We were very fortunate to have dodged the storm. Skies are clearing to the south. We had about a quarter of an inch of rain and a little snow that didn’t stick. The cross-country builders — Chris Owens, Tyson Rementer and Jon Wells — worked all day yesterday and were out there bright and early this morning. The course was aerated last weekend, so the rain we did get has soaked in. Even though it is going to be cold this weekend, the footing for cross country should be perfect. We are looking forward to everyone arriving on Thursday.”

Brian and Penny expect the course to be in good condition for the weekend. Photo courtesy of Brian Ross.

Other parts of Eventing Nation have not been so lucky. Sinead Halpin uploaded photos of storm damage in Pittstown, N.J., to her Facebook page this morning. Downed trees and power lines blocked all five access points to the barn, so Meg Kep and crew ended up walking several miles to check on the horses. Now that’s dedication.
Stay safe out there, Eventing Nation. If you have any photos or updates on storm damage, tip us at [email protected].
