100 Days Just Around the Corner for RRTP Thoroughbreds

Suave Jazz takes in the crown at the Maryland Horse World Expo.

The four Thoroughbreds participating in the Retired Racehorse Training Project’s 100-Day Challenge will appear for their final evaluation next week at the PA Horse World Expo. It doesn’t seem like much time has passed since we first met the four superstars — Declan’s Moon, Alluring Punch, Suave Jazz and Gunport — and fans started picking their favorite Thoroughbred. We first saw all but Gunport — who was sidelined with a hock injury — in action last month at the Maryland Horse World Expo, and now comes the final test.

Steuart Pittman recently announced the three judges who will decide which Thoroughbred takes home the top prize. The judges are: Nick Karazissis, a leading hunter/jumper trainer from California who grew up riding Thoroughbreds; Bev Strauss, eventer, racehorse trainer, and director of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, one of the country’s oldest and most respected Thoroughbred placement organizations; and Donnan Jones, a dressage guru to international eventers for decades, Olympic dressage rider and wife of legendary Throughbred bloodstock agent Russell Jones.

These judges all have an excellent perspective on riding and training Thoroughbreds for second careers. Those of us who are lucky enough to make it to Harrisburg will have the privilege of watching the judges assess these Thoroughbreds firsthand. Each judge will be given 100 votes to add to the votes that the public will begin casting this week. Steuart plans to post voting criteria any day now. Stay tuned to the RRTP Facebook page for more information on the 100-Day Challenge.
The PA Horse World Expo will take place Feb. 21-24 at the Farm Show Complex, 2301 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The 100-Day Challenge final evaluation and judging will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Steuart will also host a session on “Basic Dressage for the Thoroughbred Off the Track” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb 24, as well as “Basic Jumping for the Thoroughbred Off the Track at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25.
