The EHV-1 saga in Florida continues. As we reported earlier this week, seven total horses have now tested positive for EHV-1 wild type, six of which were linked to HITS Ocala. While the quarantine at the Winter Equestrian Festival has been lifted, a variety of biosecurity measures remain in place to safeguard horse welfare. As we announced yesterday morning, Rocking Horse III will still run this weekend. All horses must have a health certificate dated within 72 hours of arriving on the show grounds stating the horse is EHV-1-free.

Event officials at Red Hills emailed all registered competitors for the March 7-10 event yesterday afternoon, confirming that the event will also require a 72-hour health certificate. “We are prepared with a quarantine barn in the event of any suspicious horse,” officials said. “We have a terrific team of veterinarians in place should any horse require attention. But if you have any concerns about the health of your horse, please be judicious and err on the side of caution.”

Clayton Fredericks is implementing his own quarantine at Oak Lane Farm in Ocala, according to an email newsletter he issued yesterday. Lessons with ship-ins have been suspended for 10 days. None of Clayton’s horses will be competing this weekend, and it seems unclear at this point as to whether or not he will make the trip to Red Hills. “Having observed the effects of Foot & Mouth Disease in the UK and Equine Influenza in Australia, I know that we cannot be too cautious, and, of course, the horse’s welfare is paramount,” Clayton said.
