The Horse Sport MD Bred to Event Classic returns to Loch Moy Farm this year with a new feature for its oldest competitors: four-year-olds will jump a single steeplechase fence and five-year-olds two, incorporated into the gallop phase at the end of cross country during the Championship — a change organizers say reflects the series’ commitment to preserving the gallop as a core evaluation tool amid ongoing debate over the sport’s direction. The steeplechase obstacles will appear only on the Four- and Five-Year-Old Championship courses, not at the qualifiers, giving judges Phyllis Dawson, Kim Severson, and Robin Walker an added dimension for assessing the Gallop Score.

The 2026 schedule pushes the second qualifier and Championship later in the calendar to reduce conflicts with other events: the first qualifier runs August 22 at Loch Moy Farm, with the second qualifier on October 23 and the Championship October 24–25. The program, created to fill the gap left by the discontinued USEA Future Event Horse program, offers divisions from yearlings through five-year-olds with awards for Maryland-bred, Thoroughbred, and U.S.-bred horses, and prize money split among breeders, owners, and riders.
