Friday News & Notes from Stable View

Image courtesy of The Chronicle of the Horse.

We’re saddened to share the passing of Helena “Lana” du Pont Wright, the first woman to ever compete in Olympic three-day eventing, who died on April 23 at the age of 85. A true trailblazer, Lara helped pave the way for generations of women in equestrian sport—most notably by earning a spot on the U.S. team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where she and her teammates won team silver. Her remarkable legacy spans eventing, driving, endurance, and the founding of key institutions like the U.S. Eventing Association and Fair Hill International. Her death came just before this year’s Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event, where many riders paused to reflect on her impact. “She was an icon,” said USEF Chief of Sport David O’Connor. “She shaped equestrian sport in this country,” added Allison Springer. We’re remembering her today through a beautiful tribute from The Chronicle of the Horse, which originally appeared in Untacked magazine. Make sure to read it and honor Lara’s legacy here.

The FEI has partnered with U.S.-based nonprofit #WeRideTogether to launch a free online safeguarding course aimed at preventing sexual misconduct and abuse in equestrian sport. Open to both FEI members and the wider equestrian community, the course combines athlete- and trauma-informed education with practical tools like printable resources and interactive quizzes. “The culture of sport should be one that puts morals over medals—or riders over ribbons,” said #WeRideTogether executive director Michaela Callie. The training is available now on FEI Campus. Read more here.

For NC State senior Lily Dal Cin, college has been a balancing act between riding, art, and resilience. A member of the school’s intercollegiate eventing team, Lily has navigated the ups and downs of horse injuries and academic demands while anchoring her team with steady support and positivity. With a double dose of talent in the saddle and in the studio—she’s an animation major who plans to launch a fine art business—Lily’s college experience has been defined by grit, growth, and the close-knit equestrian community that helped her thrive. Read more about Lily here.

If you’re introducing your horse to new cross country challenges like ditches, water, or banks, groundwork might be your best tool. Eventer Chelsea Canedy shares in her EQUESTRIAN+ video series how working from the ground helps horses build confidence and curiosity before ever tackling these questions under saddle. “It’s not about forcing them—it’s about helping them think through the problem,” she says. From encouraging a drink in the water to calmly stepping off a bank, her approach emphasizes safety, communication, and trust. Read and watch more here.

A new study published in the International Journal of Equine Science is shining a spotlight on a growing crisis in the equestrian world: the working conditions of grooms. Conducted by former groom Susanna Liis Ole and equestrianism professor Inga Wolframm, the study found that long hours, low pay, and lack of legal protections are driving experienced grooms out of the industry—putting horse welfare and the sport’s future at risk. Susanna will discuss the findings in a free webinar hosted by the HorseGrooms Community on May 5 at 1 p.m. EST. You can learn more here.

It’s nearly time to kick things off with our next CCI5* of the event, this time “down under” in Australia with the Adelaide Equestrian Festival! With the time zone difference, the event will be about a day ahead of Eastern time here in the U.S., so it’s a bit of a gymnastic exercise to figure out when to tune in, but we’ve been using the World Time Buddy app to help us juggle the time zones. You can view it here to figure out when things will be happening in your time zone.

The First Horse Inspection will have already kicked off by the time you are reading this, so we’ll be looking ahead to the start of dressage, which for the 5* will happen at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT / 12:30 a.m. BST / 1:30 a.m. CEST TODAY (Thursday). Cross country will begin on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Adelaide, which is 10:30 p.m. on Friday ET / 7:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 a.m. Saturday BST / 4:30 a.m. Saturday CEST. You will be able to follow along live on Horse & Country here. Stay tuned for more content coming your way from Atalya Boytner, our boots on the ground this week!

Double bridles are not an issue in themselves – but education on their use and constant learning in all areas of equestrianism are key to continuing to improve equine welfare. These are the messages from researchers who found that double bridles exert similar or less nasal pressure and rein tension than snaffles in elite horses. Read more on the research here.

Allergies in horses can present in many ways — from hives and itching to coughing, nasal drainage, and head shaking. Common allergens include insect bites, grass and tree pollen, dust and molds, and even chemicals around the barn. Managing a horse’s environment is key: improving ventilation, choosing low-dust bedding, and limiting exposure to irritants can significantly reduce respiratory and skin reactions. Nutrition also plays an important role. Omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in Contribute™ from Kentucky Performance Products, have been shown to reduce skin inflammation and support a healthier immune response. Feeding omega-3s daily can be an effective addition to your allergy management plan. Learn more about keeping your horse comfortable at kppusa.com.

Today at Defender Kentucky

Each day this week, we’ll have a general schedule for the day (you can always view the official event schedule for the full roster of events, including demos, here), so be sure to check back in every morning for the latest!

Today at 2 p.m., the First Horse Inspection will take place. It’ll just be the 5* horses (the 4*-S horses will have done in-barn inspections, and will trot up on Sunday morning with the others). Typically, the jog is live streamed on the Kentucky Facebook page. Keep an eye out here for a live video close to 2 p.m.

After that, the cross country course will open to the riders once the Ground Jury has done their final approvals. The riders who compete on Thursday will also head down to Rolex Stadium for ring familiarization, which gives them the opportunity to get their horses into the competition ring ahead of their actual test.

Today, our team will be heading out on cross country to begin gathering photos for our 5* course preview. This year, we’ll be using Impulsion Media to create our course preview video, which will drop on social later this week. CrossCountryApp will also publish a guided preview of the 5* and maps of both courses soon here.

Don’t forget to start studying! Our new and improved Form Guide is ready to help you learn all you need to know about every 5* competitor. Click here to access it. You can find more information in the link list below or in our Ultimate Guide here.

In a recent Practical Horseman interview, James reflected on his long partnership-building philosophy, his quirky but gifted mare Karma, and the early horses that helped define his career—like Parker, his first U.S. horse who took him to countless 5* finishes. “I love the all-around test of horsemanship,” he said of eventing. “And there’s something really special about watching a horse with heart and desire make it all the way.” Read the Q&A here.

The 2025 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event is shaping up to be a true clash of titans. In a recent column for The Chronicle of the Horse, Olympic veteran Kyle Carter gave us his take on this year’s event, calling out the strength of the international contingent, including four-time Kentucky winner Michael Jung, who’s back with fischerChipmunk FRH and aiming for a record fifth victory. Add in Tim Price with three top mounts and World No. 1 Tom McEwen (though JL Dublin has rerouted to Badminton), and we’ve got a showdown for the ages. Kyle also celebrates this year’s six 5* first-timers and reflects on the end of the once-coveted Rolex Grand Slam, which Jung himself claimed in 2016. After nearly four years of preparation, Galway Downs owner Ken Smith was blindsided by a last-minute decision to move the 2028 Olympic equestrian events to Santa Anita Park. Galway had been the listed venue on the LA28 website and had undergone extensive upgrades in collaboration with Olympic officials. “We ask, ‘Why are you pulling the Olympics?’ And they go, ‘For a host of reasons.’ I go, ‘Well, what’s one?’ They couldn’t give us one,” Smith said. Galway Downs features an advanced-level cross-country course and is set to host the 2025 American Eventing Championships. It’s unclear how Santa Anita, a racetrack, will accommodate eventing’s cross-country phase. The FEI confirmed all equestrian events will take place on-site at Santa Anita, but no course details have been shared. The Chronicle of the Horse has more here.

After years of near-misses, Rachael Hardman finally qualified for the 2025 LeMieux Badminton Grassroots Championships with her Irish import “Jimbo”—only for a serious injury to threaten everything. A winter fall landed her in the hospital for surgery on New Year’s Day, followed by a six-month no-riding prognosis. But with support from the British Eventing Support Trust, Rachael began a remarkable recovery and is now back in the saddle, aiming to compete at Calmsden—and officially entered for Badminton. “The Trust isn’t just there for professionals — it’s for amateur riders too,” she says. “Even if we don’t make it to the start line, I’m so proud of how far we’ve come.” Read her latest update here.

Izzy Taylor heads to her 20th Ballindenisk 4*-S start this weekend with one goal in mind: finally adding a win in this class to her résumé. Despite six 4*-S wins in Ireland and four runner-up finishes at Ballindenisk, the top spot here has remained just out of reach. According to EquiRatings, Taylor holds a 41% win chance — led by SBH Big Wall, who last won at Lisgarvan House. With Barrington Alice also in the mix, could this be the year Taylor breaks the streak? When Zoie Brogdon sat down to interview Donna Cheek, who became the first Black rider to represent the U.S. in international show jumping back in 1982, it became much more than a conversation. It was a moment of connection, legacy, and a powerful reminder of how representation shapes possibility. Donna’s story is one of grit, love for the sport, and the barriers that still remain. This beautifully written piece reflects on their shared experiences, the importance of visibility, and the generations they continue to inspire. Read the full story here.

A new national review process for frangible cross-country jump designs is now in place, thanks to a collaborative effort between USEF and USEA. The initiative aims to encourage domestic innovation by allowing for the evaluation of new frangible devices at the national level—without requiring mass production standards set by the FEI. The goal? Improve safety while providing more flexibility for unique and small-scale designs. Applications are now open via the USEF website. You can read more about this new initiative, which stands to make frangible technology more accessible and prevalent, here.

Horse & Hound took a closer look at the change of host venues for the LA28 equestrian events. News broke earlier this week that the LA28 organizers were allocating equestrian to Santa Anita Park, a racetrack located in Arcadia, CA, after originally proposing Galway Downs in Temecula, CA as the venue. You can read their story here. Of note: there has not yet been a formal confirmation of venue for para-equestrian.

We are heartbroken to share the tragic news of 25-year-old rider and mother Katie Hacche, who passed away on April 12 following a fall in the warm-up arena at Little Mill Equestrian Centre in Wales. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders and emergency services, Katie could not be revived. Known as a kind and well-loved presence in the community, Katie had recently moved into a new home with her partner, Dan, and their 9-month-old son, Theo. A fundraiser has been launched to support Dan and Theo in the wake of this unimaginable loss. Little Mill Equestrian has pledged entry fees from the weekend’s event to the fund in Katie’s honor. Our deepest condolences go out to Katie’s family, friends, and all who knew her. Read more here.

The entry list for the 2025 MARS Badminton Horse Trials continues to evolve, with two exciting international additions: Ireland’s Patrick Whelan and Ikoon LAN and Austria’s Dr Harald Ambros with Vitorio Du Montet have both joined the roster of accepted entries. On the other side of the update, British riders Aaron Miller (KEC Deakon) and Emma Thomas (The Buzz Factor) have withdrawn from the competition, marking a shift in the home nation’s representation as the countdown to the big event continues. Read more updates here.

Southern California riders kicked off 2025 with a masterclass from two-time Olympic gold medalist Tom McEwen at Galway Downs. Known for his thoughtful, individualized coaching, McEwen encouraged riders to think critically with each ride—starting every session with the question, “What do you reckon?” Exercises focused on straightness, balance, and creating the ideal canter, with an emphasis on letting horses learn without micromanaging. From green horses to upper-level pairs, every rider left with a clearer understanding of their role—and their horse’s—on course. Read more on Practical Horseman here.

If you’re looking to add more softness, suppleness, and balance to your horse’s way of going, Relaxation Exercises for Horses: A Guide to Soft, Supple, and Light by Guillaume Henry is packed with thoughtful, classical approaches. The book breaks exercises into longitudinal (think transitions, halts, stretching, hills) and lateral (circles, leg-yield, shoulder-in, haunches-in) movements, each designed to help improve flexibility, engagement, and symmetry. Whether you’re schooling on the flat or looking to improve your jumping, these exercises can bring your horse’s body—and brain—into greater harmony. Read the full excerpt here.

We’re sending all of our love to Libby Head, who bid farewell to her horse of a lifetime, Sir Rockstar, this week. “Rocky” was 27.

Libby and her scrappy off-track Thoroughbred were together since Libby was just 16, and their partnership took them to some truly epic heights. Rocky was Libby’s first 5* partner, jumping around both Kentucky and Badminton and most of Burghley during their hey day.

“From buying a neglected little 10 year old to running around Kentucky, Badminton, and Burghley,” Libby wrote on social media. “He would jump anything you put in front of him and truly packed me around so many events, and taught me so so much. He was the kindest horse, and I’m so glad I got to share him with so many other people along the way.”

In his later years, Rocky partnered with students of Libby’s to teach them the ropes of eventing, truly enjoying his job until he reached full retirement.

He’s an unforgettable one, and we’re keeping Libby and all who knew and loved Sir Rockstar in our thoughts.

“The half-halt is a beautiful, effortless way to ask your horse…” starts Gwyneth McPherson in her latest deep-dive—but don’t be fooled. The half-halt should be beautiful, but it’s rarely effortless. In fact, it’s one of the most misunderstood and underdeveloped tools in dressage training. In her latest article, Gwyneth peels back the layers of this nuanced concept: what a half-halt does (hint: it’s not just about slowing down), when to use it (spoiler: pretty much every stride), and how to feel when it’s actually working. She also tackles some big-picture issues—like the contact misconceptions that plague even upper-level riders—and offers thoughtful insights for those seeking real understanding beyond the show ring. When it comes to protecting your horse’s health, there’s no one-size-fits-all vaccination plan. Age, travel schedule, exposure to other horses, feeding practices, and even the local climate and environment all play a role in determining what vaccines your horse needs—and when. Core vaccines are essential for all horses, but risk-based vaccines should be tailored to your horse’s lifestyle and surroundings. Your veterinarian is the best resource to help you build a smart, individualized vaccination strategy that evolves with your horse’s needs, but you can also read a primer (geared towards Canadians, but also useful for everyone) here.
