Friday News & Notes from Stable View

We’re leading off this mornings news round-up with some thoughts from Phillip Dutton, who shared some reflections on a tough season and the future of the sport. We’ll copy in his writing below, or you can also view and discuss it on the embedded post above.

“With the 2024 eventing season coming to a close, I feel it has been a great year for our sport in many respects with some incredible performances at the CCI5*s throughout the world and with the showcasing of the sport at the Paris Olympics.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
The downside and tragic events of the year were two high-profile riders having cross-country falls. Namely, the death of Georgie Campbell and the life-changing accident of Liz Halliday at the AEC competition in Lexington, KY.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Our sport has come a long way in regard to safety and horse welfare. Frangible pins have definitely prevented falls, and in doing so, have prevented major injuries to both horse and rider – and probably, in some cases, death. Course design and construction have also played an important part as well. It is in everyone’s best interest to embrace this new technology to further improve the safety of the sport. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Both Georgie and Liz’s falls were at jumps without frangible pins. It is probably not practical yet to have every fence frangible, but as riders, we should be encouraging organizers and designers to aim for this. Other sports more dangerous than ours have made huge leaps in the safety area – Formula One and the NFL come to mind. Having the old adage that horses won’t learn if the fences come down is rubbish! If a horse needs to run into a solid fence to back off, you probably shouldn’t be riding him. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
On the other side of safety, riders have to make sure they have the right skills and their horses the right education before setting out on course. Aggressive riding definitely plays a part in keeping a horse confident on cross country. More importantly though, is being able to approach each cross-country jump with the required speed, line and take off distance on a forward-thinking horse. After watching some of the long-format events lately, it’s clear to me that many riders lack those skills and instead are relying just on speed and aggression and having a brave, genuine horse.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

As riders, we have to make split-second decisions, and it is not always going to be the right decision. That is sport and life. However, embracing improvements to jump design, frangible devices in future courses and riders who have a good grasp, understanding and the skills needed to ride safely at each jump will hopefully keep a bright future for our sport.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣”

Valuable thoughts, and the source of much discussion on social media now. So we want to know: What are your thoughts on Phillip’s post and the state of eventing at large? We’d love if you shared your thoughts with us; you can do so in the comments of this post, on social media, or by emailing us at [email protected].

Cycle4Caroline (C4C) is officially underway, honoring the life and legacy of Caroline March, the British event rider and sister of Piggy March who passed away last year. The 1,100km charity ride began yesterday at Blair Castle in Scotland and will culminate at The Savoy Hotel in London on November 30. Riders and supporters are raising funds for the British Eventing Support Trust and Spinal Research, two causes close to Caroline’s heart after her 2022 eventing accident. Yesterday’s kickoff saw one Ian Stark and Wills Oakden leading the pack of cyclists early on, and the group made stops at hallmark locations like Scone Palace, the forthcoming newest UK 4*-L on the fixtures calendar, and finishing the day with a visit to Lucinda Russell’s racing yard and the Grand National winner Corach Gambler.

Sara Kozumplik has shared that her former horse, As You Like It, has passed on at the age of 34. He had been living in retirement with Sara’s parents not far from her longtime owner, Edy Rameika’s, farm in Virginia. “I cannot express how thankful I am that we had him in our lives so long, and that he left us the way I’d always hoped…..in his sleep at night,” Sara shared on social media.

“Auggie” was a horse of a lifetime for Sara, partnering with her at the Kentucky Three-Day Event, Burghley, Badminton, Pau, and Bramham, to name a few. We found this throwback article on The Chronicle of the Horse in which Sara looks back on the biggest cross country fence she’d ever seen at that point, the Burghley Bounce Bank — it’ll provide a small glimpse at the heart As You Like It Had and the wings he gave to Sara.

“Thank you Auggie,” Sara wrote. “You are one of the four reasons I’m anything in this sport today. Thank you for saving me and taking me places I had no business being at the time. You were tough, funny, kind, careful, and brave as a lion. I’m glad you got to meet Rubens, he’s the same.”

Founded in 2023 by a passionate equestrian with a background in marketing communications, Thiandro Equestrian seeks to address the substantial gap in the equestrian apparel market by providing sizes from XS to 3XL. With a focus on inclusivity, the brand aims to create high-quality riding apparel that empowers all riders to feel confident and comfortable in their gear.

Holly, the founder of Thiandro Equestrian, shared her inspiration for the brand: “The landscape of the fashion industry has changed so much in recent years, and we’re finally scratching the surface of embracing different body types. I have friends who have personally told me their struggles in finding appropriate riding clothes because of the lack of size inclusivity, so it’s always been a priority from the start.”

While many equestrian brands only offer a handful of traditional sizes, Thiandro Equestrian aims to provide more options for a variety of body types. Holly noted, “We’ve received a lot of feedback through our social media platforms, and we take that seriously in the direction and development of our lines. I have had so many people message me saying, ‘I love your designs, but are you going to carry my size?”

The equestrian industry has historically overlooked larger size options, which Holly finds puzzling. “I don’t know if there’s some kind of notion that curvier people don’t ride, but anyone who’s an equestrian knows that’s not true.” This commitment to inclusivity sets Thiandro Equestrian apart from its competitors, pushing for representation across all sizes.

One of the brand’s unique selling points is its focus on flattering designs for various body types. Holly explained, “We use a variety of design techniques to ensure that our pieces are flattering on different body types. This ranges from the fabric we select, which is often stretchy yet slightly compressive materials, to the actual design.” For example, the Essential Riding Tights feature a super high waistband with a vee shape on the backside, offering a flattering look for numerous figures.

The brand also incorporates technical innovations into their designs that enhance both functionality and performance. For example, the Essential Riding Tights as well as an upcoming suede breech design both include zipper pockets on both sides for secure storage. This was something Holly struggled to find in breeches prior to designing her own. The company’s breeches and base layers also offer UPF 50 protection and are made from recycled fabric, allowing riders to enjoy high-performance apparel while being environmentally conscious.

The initial feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, especially regarding the size range. “Customers have responded so kindly to our size range. This does make me a bit sad though, as I really feel it should just be the norm at this point,” Holly remarked. The brand is also committed to ongoing education regarding size inclusivity, addressing these topics openly on social media platforms.

Holly hopes that her efforts will inspire other brands to expand their size offerings. “I’ve heard of some brands using the excuse that it’s too expensive to include that many sizes, but we haven’t found that to be the case. My suggestion is to find a good designer and a trustworthy manufacturer that will work with you to make the product your audience is asking for.”

To ensure quality and consistency across all sizes, the brand collaborates closely with its manufacturer. “Our manufacturer has an in-house quality control team, and we also use a third-party inspection service. Quality is hugely important to us, especially being a new brand,” Holly stated.

As for future plans, Holly is eager to expand Thiandro Equestrian’s offerings further. “I’m really itching to get into menswear. It’s an intimidating sector for me, since it’s not like I can just order samples and try them myself, and also the sizing is a bit different. But I’m hoping we can add some inclusivity in that sector later on.”

For customers looking to support inclusivity in equestrian sports, Holly emphasizes the importance of choosing brands that align with these values. “I myself am more of a standard size, but I’ve still found myself in more recent years gravitating towards companies that are innovating and on the pulse of important issues like this.”

Readers can explore the latest collections from Thiandro Equestrian at thiandroequestrian.com and stay updated on the brand’s developments and initiatives by following on TikTok and Instagram. The launch of the fall/winter collection is just around the corner, Thiandro Equestrian’s commitment to inclusivity promises to make a significant impact in the equestrian apparel market.

EN will also be teaming up with Thiandro Equestrian for a winter giveaway coming your way soon, so keep an eye out for more!

While media access was restricted during the meeting, a subsequent press conference featured insights from IDTC Secretary General Linda Keenan and IDRC Secretary General Klaus Roeser. Brandenburg’s Joshua
04/03/1995 — 10/23/2024
Owned by Stephen Bradley, William Lowe & Charlotte Harris

It’s with great…

Posted by Stephen S. Bradley Eventing on Monday, November 4, 2024

We’re sad to report this morning that Stephen Bradley’s legendary partner, Brandenburg’s Joshua, has passed away at the age of 29 years of age. Brandenburg’s Joshua was owned by Stephen, alongside William Lowe and Charlotte Harris.

Stephen paid tribute to his partner on his social media yesterday:

“It’s with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Brandenburg’s Joshua. An American Thoroughbred who raced at Charles Town Racecourse in West Virginia, “Josh” spent his second career traveling the world with Stephen.

Stephen and Josh had a long career together that included three appearances at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*, along with a Team Gold Medal from the 2003 Pan-American Games. When Josh was competing, he was always one of the best horses in the US and indeed the world. In his three showings at Kentucky, he finished in the Top 10 each time, finishing 3rd in 2006, 4th in 2008, and 10th in 2009. Their final competition together was at the 2010 USEA American Eventing Championships where they finished 5th in the USEA Advanced Championships.

Stephen describes Josh as “the most polite horse that I’ve ever ridden. He was a true gentleman each and every day.” If you came through the barn, you would never guess that this plain brown Thoroughbred had tackled some of the biggest cross country courses in the world. His gentle demeanor garnered him fans wherever he went, and Stephen was happy to share him with his fans.

Following his retirement from upper-level competition, Josh went on to compete at the lower levels with Stephen’s longtime supporter Charlotte Harris. And finally he came home to Virginia for his remaining retirement years, and spent his final years with longtime student Sandy McCormack at her home.”

We’re sending all of our love to all of Josh’s connections. Rest peacefully, special guy.
