Eric Winter at Poplar Place

Eric was officiating as the FEI Technical Delegate for the CIC*** at Poplar Place, and it’s a role he also fulfills at the prestigious Badminton CCI****. However, Eric is also a popular course designer, responsible for Blenheim and Hartpury CCI’s amongst others, and still finds time to ride a couple of horses. I was very happy to catch up with him during his brief stay in Georgia.

I remember competing with Eric back in the day, of course he always beat me, and he laughed and said that just as he was beginning to feel like one of the  old guard in the riding game, it’s a real treat to be regarded as a “young buck” in the official’s world!  Many thanks to Eric for stopping to chat, it was super to see him again, and many thanks to you as always for reading. Go Blenheim, Hartpury, Badminton…and eventing!

Sunday Morning Trot-up for the Poplar Place CIC***

Eight horses from the ten starters presented before the Ground Jury Sunday morning: obviously Tipperary Liadhnan did not appear after being eliminated on cross country yesterday, and Federico Daners withdrew SVR Ron shortly before the inspection. All eight horses presented were accepted, and had a quick turnover before the jumping started a little under an hour later.

Nina Ligon and Butts Leon take the CIC*** at Poplar Place

IMG_5008.jpg

In a class performance, Nina jumped two clear rounds within the quite tight time allowed, to clinch both first and third places in the Poplar Place CIC***. As she has done all weekend, she rode calmly, consistently and extremely well, and deserves the win – congratulations Team Thailand!  Also huge congratulations to Poplar Place owners and organisers Donna and Gary Stegman pictured with Nina above, the event has been a total triumph – thank you Poplar Place. It was a shame that not everyone  attended the prize-giving to demonstrate their appreciation, especially as this was such a last-minute CIC, with a small field,  and the staff here at the event went out of their way to make it happen for these riders.

Ronald Zabala-Goetschel, who finished 5th, 6th and 7th was first in the ring this morning as he had three horses to jump. Here he is on Wise Equestrian Kairo who had four rails down and six time faults.

Elena Ceballos has been a delight to get to know this weekend, she’s the perfect happy, breezy ying to coach Kyle’s dry, cynical yang and they’ve been great fun to hang out with, as has the entire South American crew. I was sad not to see Federico and Ron jump this morning, but this little french horse, Nounours du Moulin was like a bouncy ball, probably the most impressive round of the day.
IMG_4964.jpg
Danielle Dichting forgot to tell us yesterday that her lovely horse Tops did his first ever event here at Poplar Place at Beginner Novice level – look at him now, so proud!
IMG_4978.jpg
Carl Bouckaert had taken plenty of time to walk the course this morning, and knew his lines pretty well and where he could save some time. He and Mensa jumped a lovely, forward flowing round for just one time fault.

Misty Sunday Morning at Poplar Place CIC***

IMG_4826.jpg

The sun is already beginning to burn off the fog,(apologies to my English friends!) it’s going to be another beautiful day here  at Poplar. First the CIC*** horses, nine remaining, have to get through the trot-up, then they’ll come forward to show-jump. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a lovingly designed and built set, the brain child of organiser Donna Stegman, course designer Jan Brodkin, and course built by wonderful Tyson Rementer. Each year they add something new, and I was lucky enough to chat with Jan for a couple of minutes as she was laying out the course for the CIC***.
Jan told me that still prefers to design all her courses on paper, but perhaps if she had more venues throughout the year she’d have to make an effort to modernise and do more on the computer. To me, the course looks wonderful, but then again, I don’t have to jump it! See what you think of these jumps….

Beginner Novice XC at Poplar Place

Just a snippet of the Beginner Novice riders at Poplar Place out on cross country. Luckily we all enjoyed perfect conditions, as well as beautiful courses designed by Tremaine Cooper and built by Tyson Rementer, and everything ran as smooth as clockwork all day long – Thanks as always to the volunteers, organisers, officials and everyone who helps run the Horse Trial!

Stopwatches at the lower levels – lets discuss….

IMG_4815.jpg

On saturday afternoon I stood by the water jump at Poplar Place and watched the latter portion of the novice divisions going cross country. There were two fences between the water jump and the finish line, and I was shocked at how many people were checking their watches multiple times, adjusting their speed, and generally just not paying attention to the horse’s pace, balance and rhythm instead.

I understand that in Canada the rule to ban stopwatches at Novice levels and below was very unpopular. What about the education of the horse though, and some of the riders? How can we reward a combination that maintain a consistent and appropriate pace for the level?

IMG_4805.jpg
It’s not as if there is huge prize money, or indeed any, at stake – I don’t understand the obsession with stopwatches, and wheeling courses at Novice levels and lower. Comments welcome below.  (The pictures and video used above could have been anyone, I certainly didn’t single these riders out, it was pure chance, they were a few of very many)
Go and educate your horse  and enjoy your eventing!

Poplar Place CIC*** Saturday Dressage Wrap Up

marjolein.jpg

Marjolein Geven, wife of Werner, the Poplar Place resident trainer, was the guinea pig for the CIC*** dressage and rode the test ride at 7:40 on Saturday morning – yes, it was pretty damn early, but I still think she might have plaited for it, I couldn’t get past seeing her doing a test in a long arena with a tail-coat on, and yet her horse’s mane flowing free. Incidentally, Marjolein was the only rider in the CIC division to wear a safety helmet; because it’s an FEI class the USEF rules do not apply, and all the other competitors chose to wear top hats.

Jazz King.jpg
Nina Ligon was first in on Jazz King, and they did a really nice test for a somewhat disappointing 60.7. I spoke to her after the cross country, and that video is uploading so slowly it might not be done by the time I get home to Kentucky, but Nina told me she thought it was the best test Jazz King has done with her so far. She also talked about Paddy getting stronger in the dressage, and then the cross country, and how she thinks she consequently had too strong a bit in which led to a miscommunication at the second corner near the end of the cross country and their subsequent stops there, for which she blames herself entirely.
paddy dressage.jpg
She rode Paddy really strongly today on the flat – with some amazing extensions and medium work as a result but also a few bobbles, and she told me he did get quite strong, especially in canter. He looks very fit right now already too, as fit as ever, and there’s just so much of him, and so much power there!
Master Rose.jpg
Ronald Zabala-Goetschel also had three rides, here on his first one Wise Equestrian Master Rose. Thank you to Louise and Maggie who both knew that his third horse, Wise Equestrian Brer Fox was the former Jay Halim ride; Ronald brought him over from England In July and Jay confirmed it,

Elena Ceballos and Nounours du Moulin put in a test they’ll want to forget as soon as possible, I’m sure Kyle has blocked it out of his memory already, and they were delighted to get the heck out of that arena! They made up for it with one of the best cross country rides all day, and I spoke to a very happy Elena later in the afternoon who told me that depending on what happens in the show-jumping, she may be packing her bags and heading out to Argentina in the quest for more Olympic points ( more grimaces from Coach Kyle!)
elena smiling.jpg
Thank God that’s over!
Carl Bouckaert gave Mensa as much time as possible outside the arena before entering, as the horse was a bit uptight, but his cunning plan very nearly backfired when he and Cross Country Course Designer and Open Training competitor Tremaine Cooper came upon each other side by side of their collective arena’s and only narrowly avoided a collision. Regardless Carl rode Mensa for every movement, and they produced a nice test.

I’ve got lots of videos in a queue waiting, waiting, waiting to upload, and I can’t wait to show you the pictures of the show-jumping course, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such beautiful wings and decorations. Elena Ceballos – Venezuela at Poplar Place

elena xc.jpg

Elena Ceballos put a less than stellar dressage test on Nounours du Moulin firmly behind her, and together they enjoyed a superb ride around the CIC*** cross country here at Poplar. When I caught up with her later and she told me it was their her first advanced, I wasn’t surprised at her joy and relief, and I did enjoy the translation of weight off her shoulders too!
Congratulations, Elena, and Coach Kyle, and best of luck in the show-jumping! Go Venezuela and Go Eventing!

Danielle Dichting and Tops

Tops Dressage.jpg

I haven’t seen Tops and his rider Danielle Dichting since The Fork last spring, and I was struck today by how much they’ve progressed since then. I really liked this combination in the dressage, then felt a little thrill as I watched them cruise round the cross country, but for some reason I had no expectation that they would be so delightful to talk to in person!
Congratulations on such a great performance today, best of luck tomorrow and many thanks for stopping to chat to both Danielle and Tops. Go Eventing!

Poplar Place Training XC

I apologise for not paying enough attention to the lower levels this weekend; as in life, there just aren’t enough hours in the day, or night, I wish I could have done better. I did manage to get a few pictures of the training cross-country, and I do have some video from the novice coming later.

Nina Ligon

1st pic.jpg

First of all, let’s talk about Nina in general briefly, and then today specifically.
Nina is riding all her horses extremely well. She is unbelievably mature and poised, and a pleasure to be around. I’ve only met her a few times but every instance have come away extremely impressed by how professional and friendly she is. Nina is aware of how hard her team works around her, and credits them often, but Nina works every single bit as hard, as far as I can tell. Here she is discussing her horses at Poplar, while she keeps an eye on Paddy in his cold-water boots.

jk xc.jpg
All of her horses couldn’t be more different or couldn’t come from more different riders, and although she’s adapted slightly to ride each one of them, she gave them all a sympathetic but accurate and positive ride today, in both phases. Listen to her talk about them and you know she loves them, and knows them. I see her around the barn just as much as anyone.
mother & gerd.jpg
Nina’s mother and dressage coach watch intently
I can’t begin to imagine trying to function under the kind of pressure that Nina is used to dealing with every day, but she handles it with immense grace and quiet humour.
bl xc.jpg
Yes, she’s incredibly lucky, but she’s also working hard, chasing her dreams, and living her life just like anyone else. Go Nina, Go Team Thailand, and go eventing!

Poplar Place CIC*** XC Wrap Up

IMG_4747.jpg

Nina Ligon rode three really mature cross-country rounds today; she maintains her dressage lead after cross country on Butts Leon and really looked like she’s got a handle on him now, she had less than a couple of time penalties on Jazz King to move up one place to sixth overnight, and was having a peach of a round on Tipperary Liadhnan aka Paddy until a braking issue at the second of the double of corners near the end. I spoke to Nina and I’ll have more on that later.
IMG_4662.jpg
Wise Equestrian Master Rose
Ronald Zabala-Goetschel might not win the style prize today, but nonetheless he wagoned three horses round without jumping penalties, and one with just 2.4 time. Wise Equestrian Master Rose sits in 2nd, WE Brer Fox in 4th, and WE Kairo in 7th – not a bad day’s work.

IMG_4705.jpg

Wise Equestrian Kairo

IMG_4760.jpg

Wise Equestrian Brer Fox – probably the least tidy of his rounds. I have a feeling that I’ve seen this horse’s name somewhere in England and I’ll probably ask him or look it up later, but if anyone knows where it comes from and cares to comment before then, I’d love to know!
It was also fun listening to the riders as they went round – Nina Ligon said ‘Good Boy’, and really talks to every single one of her horses, Carl Bouckaert has a Belgian ‘yep’, not sure if it’s a whoa or an encouragement, and Ronald says ‘hup’ on take-off!
IMG_4672.jpg
Federico Daners was having a great round, but for an annoying run out at the second corner at 18
IMG_4677.jpg
What a great pair for the future – Young Rider Danielle Dichting and Tops ate up the course
IMG_4682.jpg

Mensa, below, would be my horse to take home after today. He stormed round as keen as mustard, and that gallop – my mouth was watering! Later, I stood and held him, chatting while he got washed down and he is so beautifully put together, and also just such a pleasant horse to be around – I want!  Steven the Chatt Hills super groom confirmed that he’s all that to look after too, and I spoke to Carl Bouckaert after his round who said he was push button on cross country, not one sticky moment, even the double angled cannons ( my Jack White fence!) which he said he has ridden on many horses and never had a good ride before, was smooth as silk on Mensa!  Mensa had no jumping or time penalties and moved up into third place going into tomorrow’s show-jumping. The plan is now to take him and Cyrano Z, who is here for the beer this weekend, to Europe for the summer, (England probably) and campaign them there.
IMG_4741.jpg
I did speak briefly to one of the vets where all the horses were being washed down and she told me all the horses in the CIC*** had cooled out really well, and were released within ten minutes of finishing their cross country, which was very nice to hear especially this early in the season.
IMG_4716.jpg
Elena Ceballos rode a lovely round on her Selle Francais Nounours du Moulin, adding 8 time penalties but no jumping faults to move up from last place after the dressage to 8th. Kyle was sprinting around after her, showing very good form – I realise he’s on the Canadian Long List for something but if he doesn’t make the Olympic Equestrian Team I vote he puts on some shorts and gets in training for one of those running races! I vote he puts on shorts anyway!
The weather here has been fantastic, and the footing is ideal. More from Nina Ligon and Eric Winter later, as well as pictures and report from the dressage which was only this morning but already feels like several days ago! Go Poplar Place and go eventing!

Which Four Star horse is this?

Nina Takes the Poplar CIC3* Lead After Dressage

Nina saved her best horse until last perhaps, or maybe it was a case of practice makes perfect – Butt’s Leon, her third ride this morning went beautifully for her to take a commanding lead in the CIC*** here at Poplar Place with a score of 46.5. NIna rode him for every mark, and looked as cool as a cucumber so it was even more surprising and impressive in hindsight when he completely lost it outside the arena, shying vigorously at something ‘invisible’, scattering spectators, but Nina merely smiled and remarked that was her excitement for the day. Probably not, as she now heads out to the cross country on all three of them!

Ronald Zabala-Goetschel can’t have had the ex Oliver Townend ride Wise Equestrian Master Rose long, but they look like a nice pair already, and this was borne out in their score of 53.7, good enough for 2nd place. Master Rose looks happy and relaxed, and Ronald not only looked immaculate but is also riding better than ever, and seems to be leaving nothing on the table in his bid to ride at the London Olympics this year.

Tipperary Liadhnan looked very strong and fit today, and Nina seemed to really be asking more from him, daring him a bit with varying degrees of success. The judges must have liked it because she sits in 3rd place on 54.6. The organisation here at Poplar is fantastic, everything is running to time, the office couldn’t be friendlier or more helpful, and the sun is even shining too – Full marks (!) and Full report on dressage, cross country and my chat with TD, and International XC Course Designer Eric Winter later – go eventing!

Nina Takes the Lead After Dressage

Rick Wallace on, in this case, the aptly named Ultimate Victory – he’s the sole competitor in the Open Intermediate/Preliminary Division this weekend here at Poplar Place. Does that mean he’s bound to win, or he can’t win because he can’t beat anyone? Sort of a glass half full or half empty situation, I suppose? Go Rick and go Eventing!

Poplar Place CIC*** – the cross country course

The CIC*** here at Poplar is another late addition to the calendar for those individual riders still chasing Olympic points and dreams. There are ten entries – Nina Ligon and Ronald Zabala-Goetschel ride three horses each for Thailand and Ecuador respectively, and with Elena Ceballaos riding for Venezuela, Carl Bouckaert for Belgium  and Federico Daners for Uruguay, I’m pretty sure this leaves Danielle Dichting and her lovely grey horse Tops as the sole US rider in the field.

The facility and the venue here is fabulous, and considering they’re recovering from a tornado just a couple of weeks ago, the conditions are even more remarkable. The course is big, solid and straight-forward, as you can see….

1st event of the year, 1st fence and I can’t focus! Things get a bit better from hereon in, I promise!

This is a big fence, especially at number 3!

Two strides between the angled cannons. We’re in the heart of Confederate Country now, aren’t we, I think we are?! I did feel as if I was driving deeper and deeper into the scenery of Cold Mountain as I got hopelessly lost on my way here, and while trying not to fantasize about a certain scene in that film with Jack White, (it’s just me and Leo tonight!) I prayed that the trailer I had decided to follow blindly was indeed heading for Poplar and not some Godforsaken holler – I’ve been watching too much Justified on FX – hello Timothy Olyphant, more fantasy fodder, I knew EN John was going to regret not offering to cover Poplar Place for me and instead making me drive 8 hours and eat sugar and drink caffeine all the way down – this is what you get! Luckily the trailer was carrying eventers and delivered me safely. If only I’d had the sense to hitch my star to someone equally as savvy to walk the course – I think I walked the equivalent to four CIC***courses while I tried to navigate my way around this one. Sweet, dopey Leo, as clueless as I, seemed happy to walk aimlessly in circles with me, let’s hope I never have to rely on him to get me out of trouble for real. The scariest thing of the whole afternoon though was perhaps that twice, while wandering around searching for the next jump, I was mistaken for a rider!

The second water complex, one stride to the skinny going out, no alternative, and just to give you a little perspective!

At the water jump. The course is both beautifully designed by Tremaine Cooper and built to perfection by Tyson Rememter.

I think general consensus is most people are happy the Irish Bank isn’t on the course this time.
I did overhear someone remark that it was snowing in Marseilles, but as I drove through Frankfort, Rome, Lebanon, London, Somerset and many more in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia (probably not strictly en route!) to get here, whether or not they were talking about France, I couldn’t tell you!

I was especially happy to see Kyle Carter when I’d finished walking the course as I felt like I was beginning to lose my grasp on sanity somewhat after the drive, and then getting lost in the woods! Kyle is here in his coaching capacity for Venezuelan rider Elena Ceballos, who he was last helping at the Pan Am Games and who is another rider looking to try and gain an individual Olympic berth. Elena rides a lovely Selle Francais horse, Nounours du Moulin. Elena has had a break from competition since the Pan Am Games in Mexico, and I stood and watched for a while as Kyle helped her on the flat. Quiet and tactful, he’s a real ‘thinking’ rider, making Elena take responsibility, look where she’s going, consider the ramifications of her decisions, I was very impressed – this must be why his kids do so well, because they are learning to be independent, proactive riders, not just do as they’re told. At the same time, Kyle and I chatted and maybe he realised it or maybe he didn’t, but he set my head straight about a couple of things that were on my mind – isn’t he just a genius! While Kyle and his eldest daughter Riley, 5, look after things up here at Poplar, his wife Jen and Trista, 10 months are holding down the fort in Ocala, and you can keep up to date with them via their blog –  and here’s one of my all time favourite entries.
It’s an early start tomorrow – Dressage starts at 8am, then there’s a CIC*** horse inspection at 10:30am before the cross country gets underway at noon. Thanks for reading and go CIC*** eventing in February?
