Go Rebecca!

Walking the CCI ** course
IMG_8031.jpg

Rebecca and Roquefort jumped clean to clinch the CCI ** at Bromont, hurray, that will make the long journey home to North Carolina tomorrow (about 17 hours) much easier to bear!

I know I’ve talked about loving to watch all the different types of horses and styles of riding at events, and I saw all that and more today in the collecting ring – bits galore! and no bits at all!

Stephen Bradley warming up In the Fog; I caught up with him after his round for a brief chat.
Thanks to Stephen for talking to us, and best of luck with the Fairhill campaign.  Stephen was incredibly polite to everyone in the warm-up while I was up there watching, as was Will Coleman.  Downtown Harrison jumped a lovely round for Jon Holling but still had a rail down on a course that claimed many scalps in this division. The same was true for Karen O’Connor and her lovely mare Veronica. Hannah Burnett was cool, calm and collected to move up and take second – definitely a good day for David O’Connor’s girls! Also a great weekend for Bromont, what a display of talent, and even US talent; I do think Derek’s courses fostered better riding, encouraging forward going and riding out of a rhythm, I definitely saw a lot less hooking and pulling which was a relief.
I am gutted to miss the CCI3* show-jumping, but “have passport, must travel” sadly! I know EN John will keep the ship sailing and I’ll be on twitter constantly myself from here to the airport to find out what’s going on – Thank Goodness for Eventingnation.com! Thanks for reading and keeping us afloat. Go Rebecca and Go Eventing!

In between divisions

IMG_8016.jpg

Today is a long day of waiting, packing and one round that can make or break your spring – no pressure!  The CCI* is done and dusted – Congratulations to Will Coleman and his lovely horse Zipp, who actually came from Carl Bouckaert’s yard originally. The two star riders are assembled at the in-gate, gagging to walk the course, and their horses are either still in the barn, or being led around depending on where they go in the order.

I had a brief chat with Leslie Law who was delighted with the way Rehy Lux went and pulled up yesterday. He told me that in the back of his mind he’d been thinking if this weekend went really well he might aim him for Pau, and says he sees no reason not to now. As he explained it to me, the horse was very straight and bold, didn’t back off anything and felt great at the finish. With Pau being roughly the same time as Fairhill, he can give him a break, bring him back and do a couple of Horse Trials, and then if he finds he needs to adjust his plan to re-route to Fairhill, it shouldn’t be a problem.
CCI ** show jumping just started so I’m off again, and it’s definitely getting warmer. Go Bromont and go eventing!

Prepping for the Jog

As in everything, all riders have their preferred methods of bringing their horse to the trot-up feeling and looking their absolute best. There were some going out for hacks, some hand grazing, hand walking, and some doing long and low work in the arena.

Emily Beshear worked Here’s to You long and low with lots of bending, in a hackamore with sheepskin, under the watchful eye of her husband, vet Dr Jeff Beshear.  She told me it’s because he has extremely sensitive skin so his face gets chafed and rubbed very easily, plus he loves going in the hackamore. Under FEI rules you are no longer allowed to compete with sheepskin padding on the bridle, but Here’s to You looked like he appreciated the break this morning. She also added with a smile that he’s very pampered, which I think he rather deserves!
IMG_7674.jpg
Off to the trot-up now, more pictures, thanks for checking in and go eventing!

The role of the FEI vet at CCI’s

Dr Yves Rossier is the FEI Veterinary Delegate for the Bromont CCI, and was kind enough to explain what this entails, and why Bromont is a little bit special!

Thanks to Dr Rossier and all his team, and indeed all the Bromont team who helped make this 25th anniversary such a wonderful event. Go Canada and Go eventing!

Course Designer Derek Di Grazia

Derek has designed the cross country courses at Bromont for the past five years.  This year there was no doubt about how popular they were among the riders as they walked them in the days preceding the event, and that was borne on out on a cross country day that didn’t see a single major incident across four divisions, Open Training to CCI ***, all day long.  By no means does this mean that Derek builds easy courses – they’re big and beefy, making use of terrain and turns, and ask plenty of questions; I’m sure there were plenty of riders on saturday night kicking themselves for mistakes that caught them out, but also just as many who were on a high after a glorious gallop round.  Derek was kind enough to stop and extend his already long day by five minutes, to talk to us.

Thank you so much for talking to us, Derek. No wonder riders are flocking to his courses, and I look forward to a visit to Woodside, California in the near future – hint hint EN John! Thanks for watching, and Go Eventing!

Bromont CCI ** Cross Country

@

IMG_7484.jpg

Rebecca Howard held on to their lead after a clear cross country in the CCI ** at Bromont, but two time penalties mean her margin for error is tiny; Phillip Dutton and Mighty NIce went double clear to breathe down her neck in second place just 0.1 penalties behind.  I bumped into her out on course, and she was justifiably thrilled with Rocky (Roquefort) but still kicking herself for what might turn out to be an extremely expensive error of course in the dressage on thursday. It was easy to tell when any of the Canadians were on course, because David O’Connor, in his hallmark red anorak, would buzz around the course after them, on  a mission  on his ATV.

Veronica came through with a lovely clear for Karen O’Connor, and sits in fourth going into the show-jumping with 4.8 time penalties.

IMG_7522.jpg
Buck on Park Trader, one of his five rides today; he really rates this horse, says he’s an absolute wretch around the yard, but unstoppable to ride, and he was certainly impressive cross country.
IMG_7525.jpg
IMG_7545.jpg
IMG_7574.jpg
Jonathon Holling on the lovely Downtown Harrison, another rider to waste no time getting away from, or between fences. He looked like he was cantering around on this horse, and yet only collected 3.2 time penalties to sit in 6th place overnight, and always looked in total control of the situation; nothing happened TO him, he rode the course the way he’d planned it working for him and his horse, it was a pleasure to watch.
IMG_7432.jpg
Hannah Burnett rode an efficient round on Harbour Pilot, she’s quietly becoming a very consistent and reliable competitor, and a joy to watch. It’s already technically sunday, which means a full day of trot-ups, show-jumping and then the dreaded packing up and going home. Bromont has been such a lovely interlude from real life, I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave, although I’ve missed a nice cup of tea which has been hard to find, and at the risk of stirring up trouble, I’ve loved seeing all these fabulous Canadians riding and representing, but I wish Jessie Phonenix were here too.  We had a request for an interview with Sue Ockendon, and I did try and track her down; as you can imagine she’s busier than Phillip Dutton, but I will try again! Thanks again but because we can’t ever repeat it often enough, to all the volunteers, the organisers, the course builders, vets, grooms, riders, mothers, dogs and horses –  everyone who makes these Horse Trials happen, and thank you for reading.  Someone tweeted me on friday that I have the best job in the world, and they may be right – go eventing!

Bromont 3* Cross Country

IMG_7628.jpg

Sharon White jumped clean with six time penalties to move up into 3rd place overnight on Rafferty’s Rules.
IMG_7591.jpg
Buck looked to be having a great round on Titanium, but pulled him up about five fences from home. He told me he’d lost some fitness, and was too nice of a horse to make him look bad by finishing the course exhausted.
IMG_7600.jpg
Lauren Lambert had the fastest clear of the day, and I felt for her poor mother Martha who looked white as a sheet and couldn’t speak while she was going round. Lauren may feel like that before tomorrow’s show-jumping as Baba Creek isn’t the most conscientious, despite wonderful piloting, and a winter in Wellington training with Derek Braun.
IMG_7609.jpg
Max McManamy picked up 40 penalties to lie in 20th place overnight
IMG_7611.jpg
Emily Beshear had a steady clear on Here’s to You, building on future performances to finish with 15.6 time penalties and leave her in 10th.
IMG_7621.jpg
Leslie had a super round on Rehy Lux, who finished full of running with 8.4 time penalties to retain 2nd place going into the jumping tomorrow.
IMG_7629.jpg
Becky Holder also stays in her dressage position (8th) after giving Cant Fire Me a masterful round. I saw her towards the end of the course really steady Teddy for the log jump at 22 before the corner combination, then come round the turn to this fence and open the throttle – quite a sight to behold!
IMG_7643.jpg
Kristin Bachman moved down a spot after cross country with a great clear but with 7.6 time,
IMG_7646.jpg
IMG_7634.jpg
and Diana Burnett moved Shigatzi up three places to 13th with a clear round.
Of course, Clark maintains his lead, but by an even wider margin after a fast clear for 4 time penalties, although Loughan Glen did look tired at the end. Congratulations to everyone today, it was a long, but ultimately safe day, and as the weather turns colder I need to find somewhere warm to get to all the * and ** photos and video uploaded, coming soon!

Bromont CCI * Cross Country

IMG_7402.jpg

The CCI * got us underway this morning at Bromont at 8:30, and Penny Rowland was the perfect pathfinder, posting a lovely clear round.  I took random photos and video as I walked around, but was really impressed all day by Will Coleman, who rode mature, professional rounds on all his horses, moving quickly away from the fences, keeping up relentless rhythm and never looking like he was going fast at all despite only adding to 2.4 time penalties to his leading dressage score in the CCI*, and nothing to both his 2* rides.

Derek’s courses rode, for the most part, really well all day, and encouraged good riding. It was a treat to watch all day, and during the brief time I spent watching some of the horses being cooled off after finishing I was really impressed by how quickly they recovered, and how good they all looked.  As always, many thanks to the volunteers who worked a long day, in varying temperatures, but with constant cheeriness. Big up to the course designer, Derek di Grazia, we’ll have a brief interview with him later, and to course builder Jay Hambly and his crew, who were heading into the woods as I left to blow off steam with an arsenal of assorted weapons – paintball. Boys will be boys!  Thanks for reading, tuck your horses in, or out tonight, and get ready to go eventing again tomorrow!

Nathalie Pollard aka Superwoman!

They’re making a film out of the very funny book, “I don’t know how she does it”, about a woman who manages to juggle everything, and the same title could very well apply to Nathalie Pollard. Always calm, friendly and beautiful, it’s hard to believe that she copes with a toddler and twin babies, a husband with (at least!)  two jobs and a barn full of horses, and still manages to ride a couple herself!  We spoke to her as she waited for Michael to go cross country, and as her father Carl “babysat” her oldest son, Phineas.

Jon Holling and Downtown Harrison

Jon Holling impressed everyone watching the jump school during the lunchtime break Friday at Bromont as he popped his two star horse Downtown Harrison over a few jumps ahead of Saturday’s cross country test. Jon was kind enough to stop and have a few words with us on his way back to the barn.

Thanks for chatting, Jon, and wishing you a great ride on both your rides. Jon also rides Kings Ransom in the Two Star – there’s no stopping those Ocala Rednecks! Go eventing!

Friday lunchtime Jump School at Bromont

Jump Schools at FEI events are always fun to watch – all that talent pooled in one place, with so many different types of horses and styles of riding, heaven! Turn down the volume because of the wind, and idle gossip next door, (or turn it up!) and enjoy!

Who can you spot and who do you recognise?
Thanks for watching! Go eventing!

Jordan McDonald

Like many of the competitors I’ve spoken to, Jordan, who has two horses in the Open Training Division here at Bromont, aimed his rides here specifically because he enjoys the event so much, and everything it offers.

Thanks for stopping to chat, Jordan. I also watched him warm up before his ride and he was easily one of the most polite people I saw all day,to the dressage stewards doing bit check and very respectful of the other competitors riding in the practice arena – sigh, manners still exist! I hope Jordan kicks ass has two great rides tomorrow. Thanks for reading, and go eventing!

The return (temporary) of Waylon

The Canadians love their canadians, and everyone seems happy to see Waylon Roberts back at Bromont to ride his father’s horse Faolan in the Open Training Division. We had a quick chat after his dressage where he corrected me on his horse’s name, thanks Waylon, and told me about what he’s learned in England!

Waylon told me it would be hard to leave England because he’s made so many friends there, (I feel your pain, Waylon!) and that he’s become the “token Canadian” but he’s looking forward to concentrating on the next phase in his life. Good luck Waylon, and Go Eventing!

Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen performed to expectations, producing a lovely test to take the lead in their three star division here at Bromont.  Clark seems to handle the pressure of being hot favourite with tremendous grace and good humour, and his calm but  steely determination paid off this afternoon.

I watched him warm up with his wife Lesley and was really impressed by her teaching style, so encouraging, she kept it to the point and positive, stressing how good the outline looked, how Leslie should just work to maintain it, she was very gentle with him but got her point across when he needed to have a little more activity. I caught up with Lesley briefly afterwards.
Sharon White moved into fifth place with surely the most extravagant final halt!
IMG_7271.jpg
and Becky Holder slotted into eighth place with her lovely grey, Can’t Fire Me.
IMG_7284.jpg
I caught up with her and Aubrey back in the barn, where I found out more about this lovely horse, after he’d had plenty of carrots of course – priorities!
Buck Davidson rode two thoroughbreds today:  Absolute Liberty into tenth place
IMG_7347.jpg
and Titanium into fourteenth place,
IMG_7044.jpg
Neither of them looked particularly easy rides, but he rode with a mixture of tact and strength to get the best out of each of them.
Phillip Dutton, David O’Connor and Mark Phillips were all conducting course walks as I left Bromont this afternoon in search of faster internet service! It’s a beautiful evening here in Quebec, the going couldn’t be better, and although the courses are certainly tough, they are fair and unanimously the riders seem very pleased with them. I hope they feel the same way tomorrow night, and wish every competitor safe rides across country.
