Colin Davidson’s Morning News and Notes

It’s a sad day today. As most know by now, Colin Davidson, a good young eventer and friend to many of the EN community, died yesterday. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to all of Colin’s family and friends. If you’ve read any number of EN morning news posts, you’ll have noticed that many times they are dedicated to a special person, horse, or sponsor. So, of course, today we dedicate the morning news to you, Colin. You will be missed.
It’s a quiet day on the news front so far, but this is what I’ve got for you:

Some good news after a tough past few days is that dressage rider Courtney King-Dye is getting ready to ride dressage again.  As most remember, Courtney suffered a serious brain injury last March after falling from a young horse, an accident that rendered her unconscious for several weeks. Courtney stated in the article, “[Before the accident] I already knew I had a great husband, family and friends, and I already had made the most of life. But I think the fact [that my accident] brought so much attention to safety, is something that was good for everyone.” It’s a wonderful thing that Courtney has made such a great recovery, and I personally hope to see her back in the big-time competitions very soon.

Don’t forget to enter Eventing Nation’s Point-Two Airjacket contest. I got an email a couple days ago from someone asking why the 3 questions that have to be answered to enter the contest were so challenging and difficult to complete. The answer is that if you watch the 5 minute informational video at the top of screen above the questions, it contains all the answers to the questions word-for-word which makes it much easier.  Imagine that!

USEA president Kevin Baumgardner wrote a letter with some last parting thoughts as his term is up on December 11th. The theme of the article is that although Mr. Baumgardner has faced challenges in his presidency such as safety issues and recently enacted rule changes, he feels the sport is still as great as it ever was. He said, “The greatness of the sport of Eventing is not merely a thing of championships, three-day events and so-called destination events.  That greatness is evident on the ground at every USEA horse trials across the nation, and in every division.  You can see it on the faces of kids kicking their ponies home in beginner novice divisions just as clearly as you could see it on the face of Michael Jung on the podium in Lexington.” Well said, Mr. President.

Start planning, the 2011 Competition Calendar is now posted on the USEA website. Did anyone order a hard-copy omnibus? When I was renewing my membership for USEA a couple weeks ago, I debated whether to check the omnibus box and pay the extra 10$ for the hard copy. I decided to be green and not order it, but I know there are some diehard Omnibus lovers out there, who get a lot of happiness of having the physical copy.

The Auckland CCI*** is coming up in New Zealand. Horsetalk has a preview here.
Courtney, from the Three Days, Three Ways blog has written a humorous three-part article about gift shopping for your pet, farm, and friends in the holiday season.
Sharon Hunt, a top British eventer most well known for her partnership with Tanker’s Town, has written an article for Horse and Country about her goals for the next year and on into 2012.
