Eventing Profile: Rebecca Rickly

Name: Rebecca Rickly
Age: 51
Location: West of Lubbock, TX
Relationship to Eventing:  Since I started eventing six years ago, I have ridden up to Training level, I’ve been a jump judge and a volunteer, and I am a heckuva cheerleader for my peeps!

Favorite Eventing moment/story?:  I hadn’t had my wonderful horse-of-a-lifetime Paddy long when he and I (and my former horse, Paycheck) made the long, arduous trek from West TX to Lexington, KY to ride with three other friends from TX  to compete in the Chronicle of the Horse Adult Team Challenge.  I couldn’t believe I had the excuse to ride on the same hallowed grounds that all of my heroes had:  Jimmy Wofford.  Karen and David O’Connor.  Nick Larkin.  Bruce Davidson.  Kim Severson.  Blyth Tate!   All of us Texans felt the same way about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so the four of us drove the 22 hours it took to get to KY, and we had a blast.

It was my first recognized horse trial with Paddy, and I was worried that we would have issues…but while he was behind my leg in dressage, once he got into the start box, he was all business.  I was both in awe and exaltation riding on the same turf that my heroes had ridden on.  Paddy was a gem both in XC in and in Stadium, and when all was said and done, the Texas Eventing Wenches (our team) won the Novice Adult Challenge.  Doing the victory gallop with my friends was one of the best experiences ever.

If you had to pick one reason why you love Eventing, what would it be?: Trying to be good at three different disciplines makes us ALL humble and appreciative of our horses….and thus makes eventers the best folks ever.

Overall Goals in the sport:  Get good at Training (so good I get “bored”), and to qualify for and complete a T3DE.  And to take great care of my wonderful horse!
Biggest Role model:  James C. Wofford.  He’s well read, well spoken, and “well ridden”, and he is a fantastic instructor.
