I’ve been counting the days until the end of winter. At this point in the seasons, I’m so over the cold weather. The good news is, we’ve had lots of cold weather in my neck of the woods … but not an over large amount of snow this year.

The lack of any substantial snow has been a little sad on one hand. It means that I haven’t gotten to take hacks in the snow, or take in the beauty of a fresh blanket of snow coating the farm. But on the other hand, that means that I haven’t had to clear the drive!

In the absence of flakes, there’s still been plenty of rainy and cold weather to go around. Which means that my horses have been outfitted in some comfy, cozy blankets. After all, they need protection from the rainy, cold winter elements.

And I should add that I’m kindof a blanket fanatic. I feel like I’m on an eternal quest to find the blanket that works the best for my horses. One that is more than just a waterproof and breathable turnout blanket that gets the job done.

This season, Rufus has been wearing a Weatherbeeta Comfitec Ultra Tough Detach A Neck blanket. Which, considering his history as a blanket wrecker, has been a good thing. Photo by Lorraine Peachey.

I’m looking for a blanket that has innovative features. Features that make it fit better and be more comfortable for the horse, and help it be more durable for the biggest and baddest blanket wrecking horse out there. Innovation is what sets blankets apart for me.

This season, Rufus has been wearing a Weatherbeeta Comfitec Ultra Tough Detach A Neck blanket. Which, considering his history as a blanket wrecker, has been a good thing. I’ve been pretty darn happy seeing how the Comfitec Ultra Tough has held up to Roo’s antics.

So what makes the Comfitec Ultra a good fit for Rufus? It’s a blanket that has all of the basics covered. A 1680 denier ballistic nylon outer shell that has Teflon coating provides a tough exterior that is both waterproof and breathable.

And then … let’s add some of my very favorite features that Weatherbeeta has to offer. I’m a big fan of the quick clip front closure, which makes taking the blanket on/off even easier. The quick clip also allows for maximum adjustability, to get a close, comfortable fit.

The Detach A Neck fastens closed around the horse's neck with front velcro straps. Where there used to be two fastening straps, there are now three. The addition of a third strap may seem like a small thing, but it does a terrific job keeping the Neck securely fastened. Photo by Lorraine Peachey.

The Wither Relief Pad is another feature that I’m a big fan of, as it helps to provide additional comfort for Roo. Plus, it helps to reduce the rubbing on his sensitive withers. The elasticized leg straps are adjustable and removable…and they help provide a secure fit.

Sounds like a pretty nice blanket, right? What makes the Comfitec Ultra Tough blanket even better is the addition of some brand new features. These new features help to add a little something over and above on a blanket that I already love.

The new Weatherbeeta Cozi Guard offers unbeatable chest protection. And I’m happy for that, because Roo has a history of having his chest and shoulders rubbed due to ill fitting blankets. The Cozi Guard fits him wonderfully, and keeps his shoulders protected.

Another terrific feature of the Comfitec Ultra Tough is the new Reflective Strips that have been added to the front sides and tail flap. These reflective strips help to provide extra visibility of your horse during the dusk and after dark hours.

Even though the Detach A Neck itself is not new, it is another of my favorite features. Tough velcro strips hold the neck securely in place during wear. But, they also allow for the Detach A Neck to easily be fastened to or removed from the blanket.

I’m very happy with the way that the Comfitec Ultra Tough blanket keeps Roo warm, dry and comfortable. But beyond that, this is a blanket that has held up wonderfully against his blanket wrecking tendencies. And it looks good all of the while.

The Comfitec Ultra Tough has a brilliant looking navy blue outer shell that is complimented by charcoal gray and white piping. The Weatherbeeta logos and the Reflective Strips also add a nice touch. And I must say, the blanket looks stunning on Rufus.

The Weatherbeeta Comfitec Ultra Tough Detach A Neck Blanket is available in sizes 66″ through 84″. It comes in two fill weights: a Heavy weight that retails for $269.99 (you can find it here) and a Medium weight that retails for $259.99.
