The Tuesday News from Pennfield

Good Morning Eventing Nation! I don’t know I about you, but I sure have the Tuesday blues today. Maybe it  has something to do with the overcast skies and cold temperatures of the past few days, or the fact that my life has lost any semblance of purpose and order at the current moment, but whatever the underlying cause may be, even the news looks like it is feeling the drag of today:

And just when we thought we were past the EHV-1 scare of the summer, new cases have emerged in both Florida and Tennessee. According to this article, “The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced nine new cases of equine herpes virus type 1. Since a mare from Tuolumne County tested positive for the virus on September 12th, seven of the cases came from horses living at the same facility as the original mare.”

If you think you’re a horse fanatic and have never heard the name ‘Red Rum’, then you aren’t a true horse fanatic. Red Rum was a hurdler in England who won the Grand National an incredible three times, the last of which he completed at age 12. (If you still think you’re a horse fanatic and haven’t heard of the Grand National, then I can’t help you). The man behind Red Rum was trainer Ginger McCain, who very sadly passed away in his sleep last Sunday, just two days short of his 81st birthday. McCain continued to train horses long after Red Rum retired and later passed away, in fact one of his horses, Amberleigh House, won the Grand National in 2003. McCain was a very well regarded trainer and will be deeply missed by many in the horse community. [Horsetalk]

Eventing has the potential to boost you up and knock you down so quickly it leaves your head spinning wondering what happened. At least that’s what happened to poor Laura Collett at the European Championships a few weeks ago. After a fairytale weekend at Badminton this Spring and then all the hype surrounding her placement on the British Senior Squad, Laura goes to the Europeans and what do you know– she has three refusals on cross country aboard the steady and reliable Rayef. Something was obviously off with the horse, and the good news is that his vets have diagnosed the problem as a muscle imbalance, after several blood tests returned very high enzyme levels. Rayef is doing much better and will be aimed at the South of England Horse Trials taking place in a few weeks. [Horse and Hound]
This past weekend was special for Zara Phillips as she took home her first international victory since 2008 with a win in the CIC***  at the International Horse Trials at Ballindenisk, Co Cork, on a 10 year old horse called Lord Lauries. I’m sure it’s a nice feeling to finally win one of the big ones after spending the past few years since Toytown’s heyday developing potential stars and young horses rather than campaigning a string of made horses at the big events. That’s all I have for you now, Eventing Nation. Let’s hope for a bright and cheery Tuesday as we plow on into the week.
