General Hospital’s Tuesday Morning News and Notes

Good Morning Eventing Nation! After a weekend with enough drama to make make the cast of General Hospital envious, I’m happy to say that the next few days are looking like they will be relatively normal, if such a thing exists.
In the spirit of holiday shopping, be sure to check out these sites for all your horse-lover gifting needs. Here are the links but remember that each time you click on a sponsor banner on the main page, you are helping to feed an EN Chinchilla.
Cavalor: The newest member of the Eventing Nation team, Cavalor is a great company that specializes in horse nutraceuticals. We are on the backstretch of the off-season, which is always the best time to try a new feed or supplement. And as a clarification to a couple e-mails I have received, the thumbnail-sized pictures at the top of the EN page and on either side of the Cavalor picture, are not in fact models for the company. Those are your EN writers folks, but we are flattered to be classified with the term “model”.
Tack of the Day: This is the place to go for the really good deals.  Two items a day at super discounted prices but limited quantities.  You get the idea.
Point Two: Point Two is one of our good pals and they make the best product on the market.  After all, they are the originals.
Ecogold: John loves Ecogold, and after he gave me the cross-country saddle pad for my birthday this year, I love Ecogold too. They are a cool company that’s based on a great, well-tested design that has evolved into a line of products, rather than just a single product. And they take great videos at all the events, so EN loves them too.
SmartPak: This company originally started off selling their revolutionary “SmartPak” supplement invention, but over the years they have acquired enough products across the spectum, to make even the leading tack stores jealous. Great products, great service.
Omega Alpha: Specializes in supplements for human, pet, and equine. Omega Alpha was one of the very first EN sponsors, and they have been a great support to us over the past few months.

FLAIR: Nasal strips are becoming more and more popular among top riders, but research shows that they can help any horse who is galloping under exertion.

And now for the news:
Did you know mares can get Cervical Cancer? They don’t mention that one on the TV ads.
The US team is probably seething in jealousy at the news that the New Zealand team has just landed 1.9 million dollars to “recapture Olympic glory.” If they could only recapture Mark Todd’s little Charisma, they’d have a good shot at doing so, even without the extra cash. Wishful thinking, huh?  Courtesy of JER.
For more New Zealand eventing news, the squads for the 2012 Games and 2014 WEG have been named. Although quite different from the US method of naming of their teams a week-or-so out from said Games, the New Zealanders just might be on to something.   Also courtesy of JER.
All I want for Christmas is to not have any more news about abused and neglected horses. Santa obviously hasn’t noticed yet, as yearly totals show a record number of horses have been surrendered to the Massachusetts SPCA in 2010.  After a quick Google search, I learned that SPCA stands for The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.
Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung is the lastest celebrity to be injured in a horse riding accident. According to the report, “Cecilia’s costume was very heavy, [after she fell] she had difficulty getting up and the horse nearly stepped on her, fortunately the horse’s owner managed to restrain it.” Cecelia’s publicist said she was ‘fine’ after the incident as she has “a high tolerance for pain and is the most courageous woman.” Stay pretty sweetheart, you’re probably better off sticking with acting than sticking to a horse.
According to this press release, the USEA magazine, EventingUSA, “has recently gotten a facelift, with an emphasis placed on event information, including Omnibus highlights and important information to keep you updated, educated, and in touch with your sport. With ten issues per year, there is more opportunity for timely features and news, event previews and promotion, a more diverse range of expert columnists, and more frequent and in-depth reader interaction.”

That’s all I’ve got for you now. John never fails to come up with something ridiculous to post, but today I’m really hoping its not an “Elf Yourself” video of me and Coren. That would be embarrassing. Stay tuned.
