Wednesday News and Notes from MDBarnmaster

From EN reader Erin Jones: From EN reader Erin Jones: "This is 1-year-old Liam Jones practicing his equitation in the children's area at Fair Hill International. Boyd Martin, look out!"

The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the upper level horses are all on vacation now, at least on the East Coast. I pretty much love everything about fall, from the beautiful orange and red leaves to the anticipation of Thanksgiving and all of the yummy goodies it brings. Now that Fair Hill is wrapped up, I get to be a virtual spectator for all of the remaining fall events, including Pau and Galway. It’s a bit of a quiet weekend in the US, with only three events running.

It’s tough to be a groom forever, no matter how much fun you have. Meg Kep is back at it, blogging about the very real issue of burnout for grooms. Sometimes, you have to just take a step back and figure out where you want to go next. [The Meg Kep Variety Show]

Is your horse too fat? SmartPak has come up with a pretty cool interactive article about how to body score a horse on the Henneke scale. If you aren’t familiar with this scale, each area of the body has a different rating system, which can change the initial impression of overall body score. [Over, Under, or Ideal?]

We love our volunteers! Let’s face it, without the volunteers at each and every event, our sport would be nothing. So we want to hear your stories! Are you a long-time volunteer at your favorite event? Did you recently have a great experience with a volunteer? Do you just want to say thank you? Send us a quick story and we’ll post it in our new Volunteer Appreciation series! Email [email protected] with your tips.

This week on the Eventing Radio Show: Young Event Horses and Fair Hill. This week Will Coleman and William Micklem talk Young Even Horses. Fair Hill CCI3* winner Jennie Brannigan drops by and the current and previous winners of the Mark Todd Bridging the Gap award  have a chat. [Eventing Radio Show]

SmartPak Product of the Day: This is the time of year where the use of studs becomes pretty prevalent, with the opportunity for mud or slick grass. I always use a safety tee to clean out my horse’s stud holes. It just makes sense to use something that won’t injure or alarm him if he tries to stand on it. [SmartPak]

Check out last year’s Pau cross country and get ready to cheer for our Americans across the pond this weekend!
