Is it the start of something special?
That’s the question buzzing around the internet this week as Michael Jung’s latest post announcing a new eventing partner made its rounds. It’s not that a new horse on Michael’s string is out of the ordinary – he’s got about four other horses competing currently in eventing that he’s acquired and produced over the years – but it’s not all that usual for a top rider to acquire a horse going four-star or better.
In fact, the 10-year-old Monbeg Cazador, ridden to this point by Britain’s Fiona Kashel, was in hot demand in recent months; Fiona told Horse & Hound she’d fielded several offers for the Irish Sport Horse gelding by Cazador LS (Dam: Cheryl CH). One of those came from Michael, who’d seen her working the horse at Blenheim and asked if she’d consider selling. He told her to let him know if she ever changed her mind when she said no. Over time though, Fiona did change her mind. You can read much more of the backstory behind the changing of hands, which wasn’t a decision taken lightly, here.
You can view a bit of Monbeg Cazador in action with Fiona, shown in the clip below at Hartpury in August:
Michael certainly saw something special in this young horse and with the LA Olympics looming in less than two years, it’s time for the contenders to start lining up their strings accordingly.
