Happy Thursday Eventing Nation! I’m finally getting ready to leave Aiken after this weekend, and let me tell you, I am so ready! I can’t wait to not have sand in everything I own, and I’m really psyched to have hills to go galloping on. I’m also looking forward to things like cell phone service, normal people friends, and regular internet service that works faster than one page per five minutes. Sigh. #snowbirdproblems.

Obviously the biggest news is about the EHV-1 outbreak in Florida causing the total quarantine of HITS. Five additional horses that are linked to the HITS Show in Ocala have tested positive for EHV-1 wild type. One is located at Redfield Farm in Ocala, four are located at Miles Away Farm in Loxahatchee, Florida. With evidence of more widespread exposure, all of the horses at the HITS Showgrounds have been placed under quarantine.[HITS Quarantined]
The first Bell Tea Super League event of the season begins this weekend in New Zealand. Donna Smith, who used to work for Team O’Connor, is currently leading the series, on Just Chocolate. The CIC3* event is the final selection for the NZ Team to go to the Sydney CCI3* event at the end of April. [Big Advanced in NZ]
Bromont is in the final stages of bidding for the hosting position of WEG 2018. The Bromont bid intends to use the 1976 Montreal Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony and the Bromont Equestrian Park for the seven disciplines . They are the only remaining competitors for the position, yet they still have to propose a plan for all of the details including horse welfare, the financial plan and revenue generation. If they win the bid, it will be only the second time that the WEG has been held outside of Europe, minus the 2010 WEG in Kentucky. [Bromont in the Running for 2018 WEG]
British Eventing’s Baileys Jumping and Style (JAS) Championships took place last weekend. In this popular eventing series, competitors are judged on style and technique and the score is converted to penalty points, which are then added to any cross-country or jumping penalties. [JAS Championships]
