The USEA Youth Mentorship Program is a unique educational opportunity that allows young riders or enthusiasts to take a peek behind the curtain at the operations of a major event. From Maryland International to the American Eventing Championships, the Mentorship Program can offer a pathway for future career interests within the sport. You don’t have to become a professional or an Olympian to have a place at the table, and you can read a firsthand account of one participant’s experience here.

The scoring at the US Equestrian Open Final was a shade tougher than predicted by Equiratings, but there were still some milestones achieved. Included in yesterday’s accomplishment is Phillip Dutton’s achievement of his best CCI4*-L test on U.S. soil since his days with Mystery Whisper, his horse for the 2012 Olympics. There are plenty of big names to come today, so take a dive into what to expect here.

Chanel Minnifield and Nathan Williams-Bonner are heading to this week’s Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover on a mission that goes beyond ribbons. Representing Zen Heart Horsemanship, a California nonprofit co-founded by Minnifield to create affordable opportunities for riders of color and highlight the versatility of OTTBs, the pair will compete on Thoroughbreds sourced from CARMA. Their goal? To show that access, representation, and retraining can go hand-in-hand—and that the Thoroughbred’s second act can be every bit as brilliant as its first. Read more here.

While it’s too late to make changes to your Eventing Manager team, you can still handicap the field and, in particular, the horses who could surprise us this weekend at the US Equestrian Open of Eventing Final at Morven Park. The 30-horse field is full of successful 4* and even 5* horses, and the $200,000 prize money will have everyone aiming to be as competitive as possible. Take a look at some pairs tapped to be potential dark horses this weekend here.

The MARS Maryland 5 Star next week will feature several USEA Young Event Horse graduates in the 5* and 3* divisions (as well as, of course, in the East Coast YEH Championships). Now you can meet the horses who’ve come through this pipeline here.

“Dressage training is a systematic process that anyone can learn, however, the quality of the training is in the practitioner.” The student will never ride exactly like their teacher because they are a completely different person with different life experiences, a different physique, and a different temperament. A physically strong, even-tempered person will produce a different result than someone who is short-tempered and equally strong with the same education. A good instructor understands this and teaches accordingly. Horse Nation explores the topic more here.

It’s time for some Fast Facts about this weekend’s stacked field at the Morven Park Fall International / US Equestrian Open Final. Remember, these riders will be competing for $200,000, an unheard of prize at the 4* level (we’re talking 5*-level prize money here), so there’s a lot on the line as the season begins to wind to a close. There is plenty of action left, though, so brush up on the field here.

This week also marks the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover, where hundreds of former racehorses will compete in a variety of disciplines (including eventing!). One special horse in the field this week has a special connection to our friends at Kentucky Performance Products, and he’s also got bragging rights from a successful international racing career. He very nearly didn’t get there, though, after he failed to sell as a yearling. Thoroughbred breeder and owner of Kentucky Performance Products Delia Nash and bloodstock agent Jun Park went in on the horse, Sibelius, and took a chance. The rest is history, and now he’s learning the ropes of a new sport with Alison O’Dwyer, who was also involved in his racing career. You can read more of this great story here in part one and here in part two.

We all know how important fitness is as riders. But have you thought about fitness from a biomechanical standpoint? It starts with viewing equestrians (that means you!) as athletes. From there, it becomes simpler to see things from a scientific standpoint and how your body functionality affects your horse’s way of going. You can take a deeper dive into the topic here.

It’s a big week, with both the US Equestrian Open Final as well as Military Boekelo each playing key roles on the fall CCI4*-L calendar. You can get in on the action by selecting your EquiRatings Eventing Manager — and there’s some extra on the line this week! The highest combined total of points earned from these two events will net the winner some YETI goodies like a backpack cooler. All you have to do is sign up (for free!) to play Eventing Manager here. To add to the fun, you can join the official EN league by using code PCTD.

Curious about the USEA Eventing Coaches Program (ECP)? The USEA has instituted the ECP to help standardize coaching here in the U.S. and provide coaches with professional education and support. You can get some of your top questions about the program answered here.

We’re bidding a fond farewell to beloved equestrian author Jilly Cooper, who penned multiple classics situated within the horse world. Jilly passed away on October 5 following a fall at the age of 88. Jilly was the author of 44 books, including her first long novel, Riders, that sold over 11 million copies worldwide. She was awarded an MBE in 2004 for services to literature, and her legacy will continue to live on through her work. Read a tribute to Jilly and her storied (pun intended) career here.

At just 19 years old, Northern Ireland’s Soul-be Courtney has already crossed oceans, conquered challenges, and carved out a name for herself in the equestrian world. From teaching in Maine to chasing eventing dreams back home, her passion and determination shine in every stride. Don’t miss the story here.

When it comes to picking hay for your horse, not all bales are created equal. The type of hay available, the maturity of the plant when it was harvested, and even the region where it was grown all play an important role in nutrition.

Different types of hay offer different benefits.
Grass hay like timothy, orchard grass, and fescue is typically higher in fiber but lower in calories per pound, and it tends to be low in essential vitamins such as vitamin E. Legume hay, like alfalfa and clover, provides more protein and calcium, is lower in starch and sugar, but is also low in vitamin E. Mixed hays will vary in nutritional value depending on the ratio of grasses to legumes.

Maturity matters.
As plants age, they produce more lignin, a fibrous component that gives the stalk strength but is indigestible to horses. Older hay with thicker stems and more seed heads will provide less energy and fewer nutrients than hay harvested earlier in its growth.

Soil plays a part.
Mineral levels in hay depend on the soil in which it’s grown, with selenium levels varying greatly across the country. Knowing what’s in your hay—and what’s missing—is key to keeping your horse healthy.

Because hay can often lack the vitamins and minerals horses need, Kentucky Performance Products created Micro-Phase—a tasty, low-calorie pellet that fills in those nutritional gaps by supplying the essential vitamins and trace minerals necessary for good health.

Did you know this event is the longest continuously running horse trials in the U.S.? The very first event took place in 1953, with equestrian journalist Miss Margaret Lindsley Warden helming the project. She then went on to found the Middle Tennessee Pony Club the following year and set another milestone here: this was the first chartered chapter of the Pony Club.

Following Miss Warden’s death in 2007 (at the age of 103!), the event has carried on in her tribute thanks to the dedicated efforts of organizing crew comprised of former Pony Club members, volunteers and community members.

Entries are now live for the final CCI5* of the year in France at Les 5 Etoiles de Pau October 23-26! We’ve got a full field of 68 horses entered for 51 riders representing 11 countries. We’ll have a much more robust entry preview coming your way soon, but we wanted to at least give you a peek while we work on it! Quickly though, or the U.S., we’ll have nine horses entered:

  • Jenny Caras and Sommersby
  • Tiana Coudray and Cancaras Girl
  • Tiana Coudray and D’Artagnan
  • Cosby Green and Highly Suspicious
  • Cosby Green and Jos UFO de Quidam
  • Emily Hamel and Corvett
  • Boyd Martin and Cooley Nutcracker
  • Boyd Martin and Fedarman B
  • Grace Taylor and Game Changer

But that’s not all! We’ll have a pretty impossible field to handicap, with Tom McEwen (GBR) entering JL Dublin as well as Brookfield Quality, Laura Collett (GBR) with Dacapo and Hester, Tim and Jonelle Price (NZL) with eight horses between them (this will be whittled down closer to the event), and oh – who’s that? One Ballaghmor Class on the list for Oliver Townend (GBR)?

We could go on and on, but you’ll have to wait (im)patiently just a bit longer for the full deep dive. You can, however, see the full list for yourself here.

Friday News & Notes from Stable View

Boyd Martin has taken home a nice bonus to lead him into a busy (and potentially lucrative) October: he’s been confirmed as the winner of the $25,000 US Equestrian Open of Eventing series leaderboard prize! His season total of 260 points, earned from his best six finishes at 4*-S qualifiers in 2025, bests Phillip Dutton, who earns $15,000 for his runner-up tally of 235. Caroline Pamukcu gets one step closer to her mom car with a $10,000 bonus with a third-best total count of 215, helped along by a big surge at Stable View Oktoberfest last weekend. All three riders will face off once more in the Final, where the season tallies are erased and the winner will take the big share of the $200,000 prize money.

Ahead of next week’s final, US Equestrian will be releasing eventing-related episodes of their series The Open Road. Earlier this year, several episodes following the show jumping Open were published, and you can view them on the US Equestrian YouTube channel here.

Show jumping is a technical sport, and when you apply it through the lens of eventing and adapting to a horse that has done at least one other phase before your round, the importance of having a flexible plan is underscored. We can learn a lot from those who spend their time exclusively in the show jumping ring. While our courses may not be as technical as some you’d see in jumperland, there are many subtle ways to get caught out if you don’t plan — and factor your horse in accordingly. Who are the top-rated horses in the US Equestrian Open Final field at Morven Park next week? EquiRatings put the best of the U.S. up against their metrics system to rank the top ten horses by ELO rating. What is Elo? It’s an EquiRatings metric that measures the quality of a horse’s performance over time, using things like size and quality of field to determine the score. One veteran combination stands at the top. Find out who it is here.

The “naughty” or “lazy” horse or pony in your barn may actually be trying to tell you something. It’s important to listen and explore when a horse is acting untoward, and it’s not a stretch to think that these symptoms could indicate a bigger issue. Mary Frances, CEO of Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre in Sussex, has spoken up to highlight suspensory pain as a common cause of issues including unidentifiable lameness and reluctance to go forwards. “It’s worrying – and incredibly frustrating – to hear of horses who have been simply labelled as ‘naughty’ or ‘lazy’, when in fact they are suffering from suspensory ligament pain and are, therefore, unable to perform adequately,” she told Horse & Hound. You can read the full article and get more of Mary’s perspective here.

US Equestrian urged its members to exercise caution as a case of a New World Screwworm surfaced near the U.S. border in Mexico. The U.S. has participated in eradication measures to reduce the risk of the insects moving into the country, but it’s important to keep up with the latest updates as they pertain to the movement of horses and other livestock. Tuesday News & Notes from Kentucky Performance Products

Canadian eventers got a serious boost of inspiration this past weekend as National Team Program athletes Dana Cooke and Lindsay Traisnel hit the road to kick off Equestrian Canada’s coast-to-coast clinic series, Eventing Clinics Across the Nation.” Dana made the trip to Halifax, NS while Lindsay traveled west to Red Deer, AB, where both shared not just their knowledge but also their lived experiences rising through the levels of the sport. From coaching in the arena to sparking big-picture conversations about growth and resilience, their enthusiasm left riders, coaches, and fans alike buzzing.

The weekend also featured insightful Lunch & Learn sessions with Mad Barn, diving into the fundamentals of equine nutrition for event horses—a reminder that performance starts from the inside out. None of it would have been possible without the generous support of Alhambra Stables, Red Ridge Farm, Hobby Horse Farm, Alberta Horse Trials, Nova Scotia Horse Trials, and the PTSOs, who helped bring these opportunities to local communities.

This clinic series—powered by Canada’s National Team Program athletes and the Eventing High Performance Advisory Group—isn’t just about two days of lessons. It’s about uniting Canadian eventing from grassroots to high performance, building knowledge, and preparing the next generation. With future stops on the horizon (Mike Winter at Wesley Clover Parks Sept. 30/Oct. 1, Colleen Loach at Équilibre Horse Trials Oct. 18/19, and Jessica Phoenix at Phoenix Equestrian Dec. 6/7), it’s clear this initiative is already making a coast-to-coast impact.

Friday News & Notes from Stable View

Emily Hamel and Corvett. Photo by Shelby Allen.

It’s time to gear up for one of the last prep events for the fall Long format season in Aiken at Stable View’s Oktoberfest event this weekend! We’ll be locked in on the CCI4*-S division, which sees one of last year’s top three return for another run at the title and prize money this year in Pau-bound Emily Hamel and Corvett. However, 18 other competitors will be looking for a share of the money as well as that all-important preparation to tackle whatever’s coming next. It’s also the final East coast leg for the US Equestrian Open of Eventing, so points will be a hot commodity for any riders looking to make a run for some of that $25,000 leaderboard bonus at the end of the season. Points leader Boyd Martin is poised to lengthen his lead as Phillip Dutton has not entered any horses, which could all but guarantees Boyd the bonus at this stage. Boyd has one shot in the 4* in the Nutcracker Syndicate’s Cooley Nutcracker.

But that’s not all! Stable View also has a full roster of National and FEI divisions on tap, and there is always plenty to do (and eat!) for the whole family between the family-run venue’s nightly “Graze and Gaze” get-togethers, VIP ticket availability, and food and retail vendors on-site all weekend. You can click here to find out more on the schedule, purchase VIP tickets and more. We’ll be bringing you a full recap of the 4* action later this weekend, so stay tuned for more updates from Oktoberfest.

“Although training a horse always involves repetition, it has to be done in the right way at the right time for it to actually further the training.” So writes Horse Nation‘s Gwyneth McPherson in her latest column. Repetition is a skill every rider must cultivate, as it’s the best way for both horse and rider to learn. But there exists a line between repetition and drilling, and perhaps the first part of developing this skill is to recognize when you’re nearing that line. Gwyneth provides more perspective here.

Monday News & Notes from Morven Park Fall International CCI

While the excitement of the European Championships took precedent on the airwaves this weekend, another important competition was also taking place at Blenheim Palace: The GFS Saddles 8- and 9-year-old CCI4*-S, a perennial preview of horses that are en route to future CCI5* and/or Championship events.

New Zealand’s Samantha Lissington continued her top form in this division, piloting Quantas R (owned by The High Flyers) to the win, ending on their dressage score of 22.4. The 9-year-old Hanoverian gelding rose to victory at the CCI4*-L at Royal Jump in France this spring. Samantha also finished with two other horses in the top 15 of this enormous class that had 68 finishers, taking seventh with her own, Neil Robertson, David Taylor and Emtec Laboratories’ Lucas Stone, and 15th with Mr. and Mrs. Robin Greville Williams and Juliet and Martin Humphreys’ Malibu TS.

Several U.S. riders also competed in this division, with “keep an eye on this one” Quidley Kellerman and Blakeney’s Cruise, the best-placed of the group, coming in 13th on a final score of 40.1. Quidley’s is a cool story — you can read more on her background in this piece by Amanda Chance, after the now-19-year-old competed this horse at Le Lion in 2023. “Pancho” is a horse Blakeney has developed all the way up from Novice, and after spending time learning from riders like Kelty O’Donoghue and Avery Klunick, she relocated to the UK, based with Kevin McNab and Isabel English.

Other U.S. riders flying the flag were Hallie Coon with Lucky Fortuna, Cosby Green and Belinda Horne’s Libero D, Chris Talley and Allison Pratt’s FE Marco Polo. It’s an exciting glimpse at the U.S. pipeline, both of young horses and developing riders — with the majority finishing in the top half of the huge field, it’s a good banner for the future.

Training horses presents a delicate challenge that demands balance, not least if you’re going to team up with a horse in a competitive setting. More athletes are using data to inform their training programs, and Equestrian Sports Science Consultant Tim Worden is one advocate of data-informed decision making. In a recent presentation, Dr. Worden spoke on the importance of using biomechanics and fitness levels to achieve training objectives. You can read a full recap of the presentation here.

Ingrid Klimke recently welcomed a group of children and young people to her stable, in partnership with the Münster Child Protection Association. The visit coincided with Vielfalt Pferd, or “Horse Diversity Action Week”, which is an ongoing project in Germany that promotes more equitable access to horses.
