Catching Up with the Mongol Derby: Race Updates

There are constant updates flooding in from what seems to be an absolutely epic Derby this year. Action packed, with some impressive spills, but also some incredible navigation and horsemanship, I can’t seem to take my eye off of the Mongol Derby socials. As riders are reaching the half-way point in the race, let’s take a peek at what they’ve been up to.

Matthew Perella had lost his horse and gear, riding off of borrowed equipment, before being reunited with his belongings. Big storms have hit hard and made navigation increasingly challenging. Elizabeth Bailey had a close encounter of the horse-hoof, and Hilaire Blythe had a “human lawn dart” moment the other day, resulting in a fractured finger. Both Elizabeth and Hilaire have been cleared to continue in the adventure category.

I’m watching this all unfold from the comfort of my own home, as riders cope with intense storms, swarms of bugs, lost horses, missing gear, and a few kicks and tumbles along the way.

While that might be enough to deter many “normal” people from diving into an adventure such as this, it seems to fuel the excitement of horse people as we cheer on the participants facing these hurdles. Uniting under a shared enthusiasm, love of the horse, and sense of adventure, riders face a network and community of support, despite them racing individually.

Madliene Haim gave jacket-less Ashlin O’Connell one of hers. Derby vets have been providing assistance to herding families in their down time. The medics have assisted along their way following the race. And 2022 Mongol Derby August edition winner Erdene-Ochir has provided amazing hospitality for the 2023 riders at Horse Station 14, offering a feast fit for royalty and ice-cold Coca Cola.

Team work has seemed to serve the riders well in the first half of the race, and we saw “the fantastic four”, consisting of Linda Herman, Xavier Ferrer, Trinity Nelzen, and Judith Jaeckle riding out front. As the race continues, Linda Herman has pulled out front to be leading the race going into the second half of the Derby.

Similarly, a four-member team from Pakistan had been pooling their resources to take advantage of good, solid team work. “Team Pak” had been strategizing to maximize efficiency and minimize time: one team member heads to get food while the others sort gear and get ready to choose and saddle horses. Their work served them well, and with their consistency in their riding, they moved up the field quickly. However, the team has recently needed to split, as two members will race on while two sit and wait for Fahad Jamil’s penalty to end.

As teams split, we see individual competitors using their skills and resources to make this a competitive race.

How to Ride Along with the Mongol Derby 2023

We’re just a day away from the start of the 2023 Mongol Derby, kicking off August 2nd. 40+ riders from the USA, UK, Spain, Kenya, Sweden, Germany, Pakistan, Australia, Ireland, Philippines and Canada will race across Mongolia in the longest horse race in the world, measuring at 1,000km.

After my own trip to Mongolia in 2022, I’ve had countless dreams of the Land of the Blue Sky, and spend numerous waking hours planning my trip back. Having experienced some of the wildly unpredictable weather, horses, terrain, and natural challenges that these riders will face, I’m certain this race will be an exciting one to follow.

This year’s riders have been briefed, and have gone through the riders’ boot camp to go over navigation, horsemanship, and a preview of the course. Now all that’s left to do is put the riders’ horsemanship skills to the test as their faced with new obstacles, and are tested in their strength, determination, adaptability, and grit.

To no one’s surprise, there are multiple Eventers participating in the race – many of the skills required in this race are similar to those needed to boldly tackle a cross country course. Aisha Gross, Alice Roosevelt, Hannah Bicket, Olivia Gaweda, and Rebecca Hester make up the group of Eventers participating this year, and we’re looking forward to seeing them apply their Eventer mentality to the course!

I’ll be thoroughly stalking the socials for the race, which you can find on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Additionally, there’s a live tracking map where you can cheer the riders along as you follow their tracker dot.

Happening October 18-22, 2023, the MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill is approaching! Tailgating passes for the event go on sale this Friday, July 7th. These tailgating passes will allow access to Saturday’s cross country action (happening October 21st) for both the CCI5*-L and CCI3*-L levels, as some of the best Eventing duo’s tackle the course.

As part of the pass package, you can expect access for one (1) vehicle to park in a reserved, designated tailgating space in one of our three cross-country fields (Timber Field, Middle Hay Field and Sawmill Field) – all passes allow Tailgaters to be parked in their reserved spot for the full duration of both the CCI3* Star (morning) and CCI5* Star (afternoon) cross-country competition. Additionally, you’ll receive ten (10) Saturday General Admission (GA) Tickets for you and your guests.

Updates from the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games

The 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador kicked off this past weekend, and will the running through the first week of July. While there are 37 sports competing throughout these few weeks, we see our Equestrians kicking off the Games earlier in the competition.

Eventing wraps up today, with the show jumping phase later in the afternoon. While we’re recapping Eventing action here, Equestrian events will still be representing with Dressage competitions running June 27-30th, and Show Jumping running July 2nd-5th. You can see the whole schedule of events here.

As we head into the final day of Eventing competition today, we see Rolando Gonzalez with Coin Toss leading for the Dominican Republic, after adding nothing to their dressage score of 28.20. U.S.-based Lauren Billys Shady and Can Be Sweet, riding for Puerto Rico, move down from first after adding 8.40 cross country penalties, and sit in second going into show jumping. Honduras’ Lara Gabrie and Harrison round out the top three, moving up from 8th place after dressage. Current results can be found here.

Liz Halliday-Sharp Dedicates Tryon CCI4*L Win to Mom

The pressure was on Liz Halliday-Sharp and the Ocala Horse Properties’ + the Nutcracker Syndicate’s Cooley Nutcrackerc in the Tryon Spring International CCI4*-L as they went in to show jumping with only 0.2 penalties between them and Jacob Fletcher with Fabian.

Cooley Nutcracker, a 9-year-old Irish gelding by Tolant R, has proven to be reliable in the show jumping phase, which paid off again on Sunday. Adding only 3.6 cross country time penalties to their score, Liz Halliday-Sharp was able to secure Cooley Nutcracker’s first 4* win — and, believe it or not, Liz’s first career 4*-L win.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, Liz dedicated her win to her mother, Deborah Halliday, who is also part owner of Cooley Nutcracker. As the day also happened to be the birthday of Liz’s late father Don, the dedication of the win to her family serves a reminder of the team effort and support that goes in to each successful weekend.

We saw an impressive showing from Jacob Fletcher and Fabian, who added nothing to their dressage score of 31.2. As previous 4*-S winners at both Tryon and TerraNova last year, Jacob and the 13-year-old KWPN gelding used their experience to keep the pressure on and jump around a clear show jumping track to finish just 0.2 penalty points away from first.

This was the second FEI event we saw with Boyd Martin’s new partnership with DSN Equestrian Ventures’ Commando 3 (Connor 48 – R-Adelgunde). With a previous seventh place finish in the 4*S at Carolina, the new duo is off to a strong start, adding just 0.8 cross country time penalties to end on a 32.3 for third.

Boyd also saw success in the CCI4*-S at Tryon, claiming three of the top four final spots. Riding clear in both jumping phases and adding on a handful of cross country time to their score, Boyd and the Annie Goodwin Syndicate’s Fedarman B saw victory. This is the duo’s second win at Tryon, having won the CCI4*-L last year.

Runner-up to Boyd and Fedarman B was Boyd with the Turner family’s Tsetserleg. Wrapping up the top three we saw Tamra Smith with Solaguayre California coming off of their second place finish in the CCI4*-S in Kentucky a few weeks back.

In the CCI3*-L, Caroline Martin-Pamukcu and She’s The One maintain their lead throughout the weekend, followed by second place finishers Tamra Smith and Kynan and Sharon White and Shirsheen Ice in third, moving up after double clear show jumping and cross country rounds.

Bruce Davidson Jr. and Business Class were your CCI3*-S winners, followed by Ashley Adams and Charly, and Jenny Caras and Sommersby just 0.3 behind second.

Caroline Martin-Pamukcu and HSH Tolan King won the CCI2*-L with Lauren Billys Shady and Can Be Sweet in second, and Jenny Caras and Beaulieu’s Cecelia third.

Liz Halliday-Sharp takes another win this weekend in the CCI2*-S with Maybach, leading the competition from start to finish. Kim Severson and Arden Juju take second, with Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Shutterfly in third.

In the CCI1*-S, Meg Pellegrini and Cooley Wish Upon A Star moved up from third after double clear jumping phases, finishing on their dressage score of 32.8. Lucia Strini and Dassett Evermore finished second on their dressage score of 33.0, as did third place competitor Ariel Grald and Cullintra End Game, finishing on a 34.3.
