Liz Halliday-Sharp Dedicates Tryon CCI4*L Win to Mom

The pressure was on Liz Halliday-Sharp and the Ocala Horse Properties’ + the Nutcracker Syndicate’s Cooley Nutcrackerc in the Tryon Spring International CCI4*-L as they went in to show jumping with only 0.2 penalties between them and Jacob Fletcher with Fabian.

Cooley Nutcracker, a 9-year-old Irish gelding by Tolant R, has proven to be reliable in the show jumping phase, which paid off again on Sunday. Adding only 3.6 cross country time penalties to their score, Liz Halliday-Sharp was able to secure Cooley Nutcracker’s first 4* win — and, believe it or not, Liz’s first career 4*-L win.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, Liz dedicated her win to her mother, Deborah Halliday, who is also part owner of Cooley Nutcracker. As the day also happened to be the birthday of Liz’s late father Don, the dedication of the win to her family serves a reminder of the team effort and support that goes in to each successful weekend.

We saw an impressive showing from Jacob Fletcher and Fabian, who added nothing to their dressage score of 31.2. As previous 4*-S winners at both Tryon and TerraNova last year, Jacob and the 13-year-old KWPN gelding used their experience to keep the pressure on and jump around a clear show jumping track to finish just 0.2 penalty points away from first.

Boyd Martin’s partnership with Commando 3 might be new, but is a partnership to watch. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

This was the second FEI event we saw with Boyd Martin’s new partnership with DSN Equestrian Ventures’ Commando 3 (Connor 48 – R-Adelgunde). With a previous seventh place finish in the 4*S at Carolina, the new duo is off to a strong start, adding just 0.8 cross country time penalties to end on a 32.3 for third.

Boyd also saw success in the CCI4*-S at Tryon, claiming three of the top four final spots. Riding clear in both jumping phases and adding on a handful of cross country time to their score, Boyd and the Annie Goodwin Syndicate’s Fedarman B saw victory. This is the duo’s second win at Tryon, having won the CCI4*-L last year.

Runner-up to Boyd and Fedarman B was Boyd with the Turner family’s Tsetserleg. Wrapping up the top three we saw Tamra Smith with Solaguayre California coming off of their second place finish in the CCI4*-S in Kentucky a few weeks back.

In the CCI3*-L, Caroline Martin-Pamukcu and She’s The One maintain their lead throughout the weekend, followed by second place finishers Tamra Smith and Kynan and Sharon White and Shirsheen Ice in third, moving up after double clear show jumping and cross country rounds.

Bruce Davidson Jr. and Business Class were your CCI3*-S winners, followed by Ashley Adams and Charly, and Jenny Caras and Sommersby just 0.3 behind second.

A 2* AND 3* victory for Caroline Martin-Pamukcu. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

Caroline Martin-Pamukcu and HSH Tolan King won the CCI2*-L with Lauren Billys Shady and Can Be Sweet in second, and Jenny Caras and Beaulieu’s Cecelia third.

Liz Halliday-Sharp takes another win this weekend in the CCI2*-S with Maybach, leading the competition from start to finish. Kim Severson and Arden Juju take second, with Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Shutterfly in third.

In the CCI1*-S, Meg Pellegrini and Cooley Wish Upon A Star moved up from third after double clear jumping phases, finishing on their dressage score of 32.8. Lucia Strini and Dassett Evermore finished second on their dressage score of 33.0, as did third place competitor Ariel Grald and Cullintra End Game, finishing on a 34.3.

It was a busy weekend, and a fun one to follow! Many thanks to Shannon Brinkman Photography for keeping us in the loops through her lens:

Badminton Behind the Scenes: Social Media Roundup from the 5* Weekend

I’ve been glued to live updates and streaming to get the Badminton experience this past weekend, but there’s nothing that makes me feel like I was actually there then a good social media roundup. From the perspective of the fans in the stands, the grooms in the barns, or the organizers working hard to keep everything running, the posts made by the Eventing community itself is really what we love to see!

Weekend Winners: Catalpa Corner, Riga Meadow, Stable View, Skyline, Texas Rose, Waredaca, WindRidge

In addition to Badminton, the action among our horse trials was fierce! We saw plenty of riders tackling new courses, from New York to Iowa to Utah. Recap this busy weekend here as we celebrate our Weekend Winners, and enjoy a solid Instagram roundup so you don’t miss out on the action.

As always, congrats to all on a successful weekend, with an extra shout out to the winner of our Unofficial Low Score Award, Camille Arnall and Scarlet Rose with a 20.6 in the Introductory at WindRidge!

LRK3DE Social Roundup

While I wasn’t able to make it in person to Kentucky this year, I was glued to my screen watching the livestream, and actively scrolling through Instagram, living vicariously through all the fans, owners, grooms, riders, and other Eventing community members that made it out this past weekend.

If you’re like me, Kentucky is still on the brain, and will be for quite some time. So, I figured there’s no better way to extend the weekend by enjoying a good social media round up.

Thank you to all who posted and shared so we could “come along” with you, even from afar!

Weekend Winners: New Jersey, Loudoun, and University of New Hampshire

Of course, Kentucky has been overwhelming our newsfeeds, thoughts, and conversations. And it was an incredible weekend! But it wasn’t the only event running this past weekend, and we saw some impressive rides at the Horse Park of New Jersey, Loudoun Hunt, and the University of New Hampshire Horse Trial.

Congrats to all on a successful weekend! As always a special shout out and congrats to our winner of the Unofficial Low Score Award, Ingrid Johnston with Resplendence, who scored a 23.1 in the Beginner Novice Rider division at the Horse Park of New Jersey.

Monday News & Notes from FutureTrack

Can anyone else believe it’s actually Monday? My mind is still in Kentucky, and I know I’ll be reliving the weekend throughout the coming week.

National Holiday: Happy May Day! Historically, today has been a day to mark and celebrate the changing of the seasons. Later, it became recognized as International Workers’ Day in the 19th-century as the labor movement pushed for worker’s rights and an eight-hour workday.

Where are our Misty of Chincoteague fans? As land use demands change over time, it’s not uncommon to see conflicting interests between protecting the past and developing for the future. Weekend Winners: Fair Hill, Meadowcreek, Ocala, River Glen, Sporting Days

Another busy spring weekend in the books! We saw Eventers out and active at five different events across the country, including two International events at Fair Hill and Ocala, which offered 3* and 4* competitions, respectively.

This was the first year that the Ocala International Festival of Eventing offered their 4*-S division, providing options for everyone – from Novice all the way up to the 4*. In addition, the event has been working diligently on irrigation practices to support ideal conditions for horses and riders. With an impressive number of entries for this year’s event, it’s clear that riders were looking forward to utilizing the opportunities the event provided!

From Starter to 4* events, we would like to congratulate everyone on successful rides! As always, we’re giving an extra shout out to the Unofficial Low Score Award winner, Scarlett Peinado with Shadow Inspector, who scored an impressive 19.7 in the Junior Novice Rider division at Ocala.

Badminton Draw Order: Wills Oakden to Lead, Americans Mid-Pack

The order was drawn for the 2023 Badminton Horse Trials, set to run Thursday May 4th-Monday May 8th, the dates adjusted for the Coronation of King Charles on May 6th.

Trailblazer Wills Oakden will be kicking off this year’s Badminton Horse Trials. Wills, riding for Great Britain, has two entries, Arklow Puissance and Oughterard Cooley.

Three American riders are scheduled for a run at Badminton, and are set to run middle of the pack.

Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus. Photo by Tilly Berendt.

Lauren Nicholson has drawn 28th with her 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games and 2022 FEI Eventing World Championship partner, Anglo Arabian gelding Vermiculus. This duo has been seen at Kentucky, Burghley, Luhmühlen, Fair Hill, and World Championships, but this will be their first run at Badminton together.

Katherine Coleman and Monbeg Senna finished 5th in the CCI3*-L. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

For their 5* debut, Katherine Coleman and 13 year old Irish Sport Horse gelding Monbeg Senna will be 42nd. While a first 5* for the duo, this partnership enters Badminton having completed a handful of 4* events, with a 5th place finish in the CCI4*L at Strzegom in 2022.

Lillian Heard and LCC Barnaby. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

And last for our American riders, Lillian Heard and long time partner LCC Barnaby will head in to their twelfth 5* start as 46th to go. With five top-twenty finishes at the 5* level in their career so far, we saw them most recently at Stable View in the CCI4*S where they finished in 18th.

All involved in the Horse Trials have been working hard, especially to combat the rainy weather that England has seen. Catch up with the 2023 Course Designer Eric Winter to hear what final preparations are looking like…

You can find the event schedule on the Badminton website, as well as keep an eye here for more news and updates as we get closer to the event, just a few weeks away!

Sneak a Peek at 2023 Badminton Horse Trials Entries

Lauren Nicholson and Vermiculus. Photo by Shannon Brinkman Photography.

What better way to kick off spring than with a released list of Badminton 2023 competitors? With only 45 days until the 2023 Badminton Horse Trials, presented by MARS Equestrian begins, the event is coming up right around the corner! We’re taking an early look into the accepted entries released today.

There are currently 88 entries, with a strong showing from Great Britain, and riders representing Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United States as well.

Katherine Coleman and Monbeg Senna. Photo by Shannon Brinkman.

For the United States, we’ll see Katherine Coleman and first time 5* mount Monbeg Senna, Lillian Heard Wood with long-time partner LCC Barnaby, and Lauren Nicholson with Pratoni mount Vermiculus.

Oliver Townend has five accepted entries in Swallow Springs, Cooley Rosalent, As Is, Pratoni partner Ballaghmor Class, and Tregilder, though due to FEI regulations he will have to narrow those entries down to two come competition time.

We see a strong field overall, with numerous competitors from the 2022 FEI World Championships – Pratoni:

– Michael Winter (CAN) with El Mundo
– Ros Canter (GBR) with Lordships Graffalo and Pencos Crown Jewel
– Laura Collett (GBR) with Dacapo and London 52
– Tom McEwen (GBR) with Toledo De Kerser and CHF Cooliser
– Oliver Townend with Swallow Springs, Cooley Rosalent, As Is, Ballaghmor Class, and Tregilder
– Susie Berry (IRL) with Ringwood LB
– Padraig McCarthy (IRL) with HHS Noble Call
– Austin O’Connor (IRL) with Colorado Blue
– Aistis Vitkauskas (LTU) and Commander VG
– Amanda Pottinger (NZL) with Just Kidding
– Tim Price (NZL) with rides Coup de Coeur Dudevin and Vitali
– Felix Vogg (SUI) with Cartania
– Lauren Nicholson (USA) with Vermiculus

While we would typically see a wait list with entries above the initial cut-off at 85, there are just 83 entries to go forward with in 2023. The 2023 Badminton Horse Trials will also have a significant schedule change to allow for flexibility around King Charles III’s coronation, which will take place on Saturday, May 6. Ordinarily, this would be cross country day at Badminton, but the schedule has been adjusted to have dressage on Friday and Saturday with a competition break for coronation, followed by cross country Sunday and show jumping Monday.

Tickets must be purchased ahead of the event, with early bird pricing through the end of March. Find more information on tickets and the event schedule on the Badminton Horse Trials website.

Giving Back to Your Community: Horsemen for Central Florida

An aerial view of the Florida Horse Park – one of Central Florida’s major rallying points for transitory equestrians. Photo via FHP’s Facebook page.

Community is a term that’s vaguely tossed around in defining a group of people — whether the group shares location, interests, or values.

Of course, we have our equestrian communities, a group of like-minded horse enthusiasts, eventers, owners, vets, and so many others. Many of us share the value of quality horsemanship, the love of the horse, and enjoy spending our time at the farm. However, our community covers so much geography, and often changes as we migrate north or south depending on the season, so feeling like we have a locational community can be a challenge.

Despite this we do participate in, and show up for, place-based communities. Betsy Ball, a Mississippi native but recent Florida resident, noticed the temporary role many equestrians have in communities such as those in central Florida. While there are many positive and lasting social and economic effects that temporary residents can have on a location, Betsy and some of her friends noticed an opportunity for further community engagement and started Horsemen for Central Florida.

“We as equestrians benefit so much from the services of Central Florida — venues, emergency services, other businesses… Horsemen for Central Florida is an opportunity to give back in recognition for all the area does for us,” Betsy says.

Horsemen for Central Florida is a recent 501(c)(3) working to provide kids access to early education reading opportunities.

Horsemen for Central Florida is a recent 501(c)(3) working to partner with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to promote literacy in central Florida. The idea for Horsemen for Central Florida was started when Betsy moved to the area in 2022, and began looking for a public school for her niece. Throughout the process, she noticed many schools had students reading behind their grade level.

“When you start behind, it’s hard to catch up,” Betsy notes. “With the Imagination Library, Horsemen for Central Florida will provide kids under five years old with a free book every month. Anyone can sign up, so it’s a great way to get books into students’ hands early on.”

According to the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Abilities (PIAAC) and the Florida Literacy Coalition, in Florida, literacy and numeracy skills rank below the national average, with about 1 in 4 adults at or below Level 1 of literacy and 35% of adults are at or below Level 1 of numeracy.

“I’m a believer that you need to put back into your community what you take out — and more! I wanted to know, ‘how can I help? How can I make a difference?’” Betsy says.

Diving into the creation of a 501(c)(3) and mobilizing community efforts are not single person jobs. Betsy is thrilled that Horsemen of Central Florida will be of service to the community, but recognizes that that service wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of board members Megan Mondschein, Kylie Lyman, Emily Holmes, and Jessica Shull, in addition to herself.

While these board members are working hard to reach as many families and kids as possible, the efforts won’t be possible without our broader equestrian community. Fundraising efforts are currently active to partner with the Imagination Library, first beginning in Levy County, Florida, before expanding through Central Florida. Once funds have been raised to establish the partnership, Horsemen of Central Florida will be able to mobilize efforts of getting books to kids.

Take a look at their website, Facebook page, and GoFundMe for more information, and to learn how you can join your equestrian community to support an area that so many eventers know and love!

Get Ready for the 2023 Grand-Prix Eventing Charity Challenge + Support Your Favorite Team

We’re just THREE days out from the $50,000 Grand Prix Eventing at Bruce’s Field, presented by Taylor Harris Insurance Services, and the official charity teams and organizations have been announced!

The Ride for Charity has been part of the GPE since the inaugural event in 2019, and the tradition will be kept alive at the 2023 rendition with six teams competing to benefit a wide array of local organizations.

GPE riders are divided into teams, with each team representing a participating charitable organization. The top three finishing teams will earn a prize check for their respective charity.

This year, we have:

Team Red – Horse Creek Academy with Captain Colleen Loach riding Vermont and FE Golden Eye. Teammates include Kendal Lehari and Audacious, and Colleen Rutledge with Covert Rights.

Horse Creek Academy was founded in 2002 under the name Midland Valley Preparatory School in Graniteville, S.C. A small institution, it started with a low number of students in grades 4K-6 set up in small portable units. MVP soon expanded to include education in 7th and 8th grade, offering a complete middle level education based in its philosophy of choice in education and individual attention. In fall 2013, under new direction, the MVP administration and executive board saw that it was difficult for the nurturing faculty to carry out its important mission in such a small space. The school was created to give parents and students a worthy choice in free public education, so they decided that an expansion would provide the means to do so. Plans to buy a new facility started taking shape at the beginning of 2014, and the purchase of a property in Aiken, housing an unfinished school, was made in April of that year. Once plans were in motion to purchase the new facility, the decision to change the name of the school was made. Midland Valley Preparatory School became Horse Creek Academy to signify both the school’s journey into the horse country of Aiken, S.C., and its roots in the Horse Creek area.

Team Orange – Aiken County Pony Club with Captain Liz Halliday-Sharp and teammates Shannon Lilley and Ideal HX, Sydney Elliot and QC Diamantaire, and Woods Baughman with C’est La Vie 135.

Aiken County Pony Club (ACPC) was founded in 1998 by Sporting Days owner Joannah Glass, and has grown in leaps and bounds over the past 20+ years. ACPC is incredibly lucky to be based in one of the most exceptional equestrian locations in the world – Aiken, SC, with access to Olympic coaches, notable equestrians and horse trainers, and exceptional facilities. Each member plays an important role in our club, and we have riders of all abilities – from those learning to ride to those with Olympic dreams (and every one in between). Our club is part of a greater network of equestrians and sportspeople through the Regional and National Pony Club Organizations. Through Pony Club our members compete in Pony Club competitions (known as rallies), which require the kids to work together as a team, in the spirit of great horsemanship.

Team Yellow – Brothers & Sisters of Aiken County is led by Captain Doug Payne with teammates Sharon White and Claus 63, Buck Davidson, and Mary Bess Davis and Imperio Magic.

Brothers & Sisters of Aiken County is a program for Aiken County Public School System children that that helps them to develop educational and leadership skills. The program, which has summer and after-school programs, focuses on assisting children with their math, reading and writing skills. The agency was founded in 1982 and serves children in grades K-12. Additionally, the agency prepares youth to graduate from high school, prepare for post-secondary education like college or assist with entering the workforce. Before moving to its current location on 132 York Street, it was housed at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center until 2000. The agency is funded by the United Way of Aiken County. There is no charge to attend the program, but those interested have to apply. The agency also offers summer camps, youth and parent conferences, mentorship and etiquette classes.

Team Green – Aiken Equine Rescue brings Captain Emily Hamel with Corvett along with teammates William Fox-Pitt and Vincent Chase, Dan Kreitl with Carmango, and Sara Kozumplik.

Equine Rescue of Aiken, (aka, Aiken Equine Rescue) was established in 2006 with almost 80 acres of land. We have eight pastures, thirteen paddocks, office building and a maintenance barn. Since its founding, Aiken Equine Rescue has become the largest horse rescue farms in the southeastern United States. We have placed over 1,500 horses into adopted homes and rescued many horses, donkeys, and mules. At any given time, between 50 – 60 horses reside at Aiken Equine Rescue. We provide each with food, medical attention, and personal care until we find them an appropriate home. With your help, we can change lives. Aiken Equine Rescue has a 2022 GuideStar’s Platinum rating – the highest distinction of information disclosure to the public regarding a nonprofit’s activities. The Rescue ranks in the top 0.1% of charities nationally.

Team Blue – Great Oak Equine Assisted Programs has Captain Phillip Dutton leading a team of Amanda Beale Clement and Carlson 119, Will Faudree, and Erin Kanara with Campground.

The genesis of Great Oak starts with the story of a boy, Alan Corey IV. Alan enjoyed adaptive riding on Long Island, New York. More than 20 years ago, while visiting his father in Aiken, he asked if there was a similar program available. When the answer was “No,” he questioned, “Why not?” That is when Specialized Therapeutic and Recreational Riding (STAR Riding) was born.

Today under the protective branches of a Great Oak, that dream is carried forward by a dedicated group of passionate individuals and reliable horses under the professional affiliation of PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). The future holds so many possibilities for unbridled success. Our advantage is our knowledge and experience. We leverage our assets in a state-of-the-art facility that is supported by generous contributions from many of our local patrons and students. Over the last 15 months alone we have served over 200 unique individuals through creative programming, dedicated volunteers, certified instructors and our fantastic herd of award-winning GO Ponies. Great Oak now manages a facility that allows for transformative growth through equine assisted activities in all seasons.

And last but not least, Team Purple – Tri-Development Center sees Captain Boyd Martin with Tsetserleg and Federman B, along with Ryan Wood and Cooley Flight, and Sarah Kuhn with Mr. Cash van de Start.

Tri-Development Center of Aiken County, Inc. is recognized across the state as being a leader in the provision of services and support to our fellow citizens with disabilities. Our strong advocacy has resulted in more resources and opportunities being made available to people with disabilities in our area than can be found in many other areas of the state. At the same time, we are equally committed to the prevention of disabilities whenever possible. A concerned community, excellent staff, and a determined clientele have brought us to where we are today. The continued efforts of these groups are certain to open even more doors and result in increased opportunities in the future. Responsibility is taught, shared, and expected. Physical and psychological needs are met. Communities and citizens see themselves as competent and are willing to become involved in the lives of people with disabilities. Our vision is that the citizens and communities will realize that they have the capacity to befriend, care about, work alongside, and learn with and from people with disabilities.

From the Ground Up: Continuing Education

This time of the year can be tough in a number of ways. Everything is frozen or muddy, the weather (and horses!) a bit more unpredictable, and it can be difficult to find opportunities to trailer off property for a little break in the routine with the uncertainty of what conditions may be like.

I try to keep things interesting at home, for myself, my horses, and my students. But it reaches a point where I need help, too — which is why seeking opportunities to continue my education has been so important for myself and my business.

It’s easy to get into a routine and start feeling stuck there. But I never want to get complacent in my own development as a trainer, rider, or coach, so each day I seek to learn something new, and take steps towards growth.

Giving myself the time and space to focus on my learning and growth has given me fresh energy… and the opportunity to enjoy some Florida weather!

Continuing education can look different for everyone. Of course, there are undergraduate and graduate programs in equine-related fields, there are trainer and instructor certifications, and there are online learning tools we can use. No matter what you’re looking for, what capacity you have to pursue continuing education, there are options for everyone.

Despite operating my business ‘on my own’, I have realized the importance of fostering mentorship relationships. Seeking out opportunities to continue to learn from the experience of others has inspired, challenged, and encouraged me, giving me a fresh perspective, a helping hand, and a flush of new ideas to take to my clients and operation.

Most recently, I spent some time down in Florida with Tik Maynard and Sinead Halpin. Tik, Sinead, and their team have been generous enough to have me down before, and it was a very welcome break from the Pennsylvania winter to spend a few days with them in January.

The weather was not the only draw to the trip, but also the horsemanship clinic series that they host. This clinic was with Elsa Sinclair from Taming Wild. Elsa utilizes freedom-based training in her work with horses, and the few days at the clinic were spent so closely analyzing body language (both ours and the horses’!) and finding opportunities to connect with our horses in a mutual partnership.

Throughout the clinic, I was able to see how properly reading body language, and fostering curiosity helped us better connect with our equine partners.

The clinic was thought provoking, and eye-opening. Taking what I learned back to the frozen tundra of Pennsylvania has left me feeling increasingly aware of the horses’ expressions, giving me a better read on them, when to take breaks or keep pushing, and how to support them better in their training process. Whereas I was feeling a bit stuck before the trip, watching experienced horsemen and horsewomen work with horses, engaging in thought-provoking conversation, and offering my own experiences and stories in return gave me a fresh boost to revamp my winter training.

It’s easy to be in a space where things can feel lonely, especially when weather is a limiting factor. The days can get long, the routine too repetitive, and motivation can run low. Finding moments to connect with others that might offer new experiences, helpful tips, or words of support and encouragement can help keep you on track. You can seek out opportunities for short-term training breaks, traveling to find guidance — but there are so many opportunities in staying home as well, through virtual lessons trainers are now offering, podcasts and webinars on training and horse management, and books as well.

Prioritizing my own education can be tricky — finding the time isn’t easy! But it is a complete game changer, allowing me to show up interested, engaged, and focused.
