Will Coleman and Zipp Win the Bromont CCI*

DSCN4449.JPG
The CCI* awards ceremony

Will Coleman won the CCI3* last year here at Bromont and this year he goes home with another victory, this one in the CCI* with Zipp.  Doug Payne sadly withdrew the second placed Camerlingo before the jog, and with rails from the riders behind him, Will had enough of a margin to take a rail and still win by 7 points.  Momo Laframboise had the best show jumping round of the 1* division to move up from 5th to 2nd.  Fiona Allen and Isengart stayed in 3rd place all weekend and finished there with two rails today.

Bromont CCI* Results:

1. Will Coleman and Zipp +4  47.8
2. Momo Laframboise and Dejavu +0  54.8
3. Fiona Allen and Isengart +8  55.9
4. Shandiss Wewoira and Rockfield Grant Juan +8  55.9
5. Ryann Quigley and Ardfield Rover +4  59.9

[Bromont Live SJ Scores]

I saw Will in the barns this morning after he put his tie on and he said he needed a tie clip–that must have jinxed it.  Notwithstanding the tie flapping in the breeze it was a really well ridden round:

–There were only 4 double-clears in the show jumping: Dejavu, Rockfield Grant Juan, Snap Decision, and Karma.  I expect the show jumping to be a big factor in the 2* and 3* as well.

–The riders who had a chance to ride in the CCI* will benefit from a leg up in experience on this twisty course for their rides in the later division, although the course has been rearranged.  How much of a benefit is open for debate but I think it helps a lot.

The CCI2* course walk is underway now as a great afternoon of show jumping rolls on here in Quebec.  Go eventing.

Mara DePuy and Alimit Win the Bromont Training Division

Mara Depuy had 9 show jumping penalties with Alimit, but their lead was large enough to keep them in the lead and bring home the training level win for the USA.   Jordan McDonald and Ramble On finished in second, and Jordan finished third as well with Glencento.  You can watch Samantha’s interview with Jordan from earlier in the weekend here.

Bromont Training Level Results:

1. Mara Depuy and Alimit +9 50.9
2. Jordon MacDonald and Ramble On +4  51.0
3. Jordan McDonald and Glencento +0  53.2
4. Hannah Rankin and Timebomb +4  59.9
5. Peter Gray and Woodfield Nick +16  63.2

[Bromont Live Show Jumping Scores]

–It’s a cloudy chilly day at Bromont but around 100 spectators form the show made it out to watch the conclusion of the training level division.

–The show jumping is being held in the smaller portion of the main arena which means that the three-day courses will be tight with a lot of jumps packed close together between tight turns.

–The course is being reset for the CCI* right now, with the CCI2* to follow, and then the CCI3* after that.  With over 100 three-day horses still in the competition, it’s going to take a while to get through all of the divisions.

Go eventing.

The Sunday Morning Jog Report

DSCN4443.JPG
Someday Christian Landholt will wear khakis just to surprise us, but today is not that day

All of the horses in the Bromont CCI3* passed the jog, meaning that Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen will go into the show jumping with their one rail lead.  Daily Edition and Gryffindor were held, but passed upon reinspection.

Five horses were held in the CCI2*–Middleton, Vaunted, Harbour Pilot, Fernhill Cove, and Mystic My.  Only Fernhill Cove did not pass on reinspection.  In the CCI2*

In the CCI*, Doug Payne withdrew Camerlingo, which sadly ends that horse’s Pan Am hopes.  D’Jion also withdrew before the jog.

The training level show jumping has already started and we’ll be along with reports from each division as they finish.

As a quick update on the team competition, the Show Me The Money team–Hannah, Clark, Karen, and Buck–has a 10 point lead.  Also, we mentioned on Friday that there were US and Canadian teams here in a separate informal team competition.  Team USA has a commanding 30 point lead although with 6 riders on each team anything can change in the show jumping.  Team USA is comprised of Hannah Burnett, Jon Holling and Downtown Harrison, Phillip with Mighty Nice, Tamra Smith and Mar De Amor, Max McManamy and Beacon Hill, and Clark with Loughan Glen.  Team Canada is William Dow and Middleton, Rebecca and Roquefort, Selena and A First Romance, Micheline Jordan and Irish Diamonds, Kendal Lehari and Daily Edition, and Diana Burnett with Shigatzi.

Good luck to all the riders go eventing.

Saturday Night at Bromont

IanWaylonPaintball.jpg
A typical Saturday evening at a horse trials in Canada requires head to toe tactical gear

There is a tradition here at Bromont among the course builders, Bromoont staff, riders, and anyone else who wishes to be shot participate to go paintballing Saturday after the cross-country.  This year’s paintball war was held in the woods behind the cross-country course and, while there’s no way I was going to try and win that coveted eventing blogger Pulitzer by getting shot, I am told that the war was truly epic, which has to rank tonight among the most significant military moments in Canada’s history.  Seriously though, it was amazing seeing everyone dressed up in camo holding guns–there was even a paintball bazooka.  The below photo shows course designer Derek De Grazia checking out the weapons in amazement.

derekpaintball.jpg

Paintball wars aside, today was a truly great day for our sport here at Bromont.  I really enjoyed walking through the barns and seeing everyone with a big smile on their face after an incredibly safe day of eventing here.  Derek, the builders, the organizers, the officials, and the volunteers all deserve a big pat on the back for giving the horses and riders the opportunity to have such a great day.  And, of course, the horses and riders deserve a pat on the back for taking advantage of that opportunity and riding really well.

The last thing standing between me and dinner is some very special news from EN’s good friend and guest blogger Holly Hudpseth in North Carolina.  Hailey Hudspeth was born last night at 11:33pm. Holly tells me she was 6 lbs 10 oz, 20 inches long, and has brown hair with blue eyes.   Along with the photo, Holly sent well wishes to all of the competitors at Bromont and around Eventing Nation.

That’s all for now.  Coren will be around later with Sunday Links, where I am told she will list the first placed riders in every division in every competition accross Eventing Nation. Go eventing.

Clark Montgomery Widens His Lead in the CCI3*

IMG_7622.jpg
Clark and Loughan Glen

Clark Mongomery and Loughan Glen had the third fastest ride of the CCI3* division and added just 4 time penalties to his dressage score.  Clark was cool as a cucumber when I saw him this morning and that calmness translated to his ride as he guided Loughan Glen through the course.  Clark takes a 7.7 point lead into the show jumping which makes him a big favorite to win the Bromont CCI3*.  In the post XC press conference, Clark Montgomery mentioned that no matter what happens tomorrow Loughan Glen will do another 3* after this to help the horse gain a bit more experience, perhaps something such as Blenheim on a trip to Europe later this year.

Bromont CCI3* Results:

1. Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen +4  43.0
2. Leslie Law and Rehy Lux +8.4  50.7
3. Sharon White and Rafferty’s Rules +6  57.0
4. Kristin Bachman and Gryffindor +7.6  57.8
5. Philip Dutton and William Penn +6.8  59.3
6. Buck Davidson and Absolute Liberty +6.8  60.3
7. Kendal Lehari and Daily Edition +3.2  63.0

[Full Bromont XC Scores]

–Leslie Law and Rehy Lux picked up 8.4 time penalties but the horse looked really good all the way around and Rehy totally seems like he is a big time horse of the future for Leslie.  It’s been a couple of years since Leslie has had a rock solid XC horse but Rehy is a top caliber horse in all three phases.

–Sharon White and Rafferty’s Rules moved up from 5th to third with just 6 time penalties.  This pair is returning to the 3* level after Blenheim last year and they put together a brilliant performance today.  There’s no doubt that they looked like one of the best pairs out there today.

–Kristin Bachman and Gryffindor are putting together another top 5 three star weekend after finishing 5th at the Galway CCI3* last year.  The pair withdrew from Rolex earlier this year.

–As expected, Phillip and Buck moved up with speedy rides on William Penn and Absolute Liberty respectively–both added 6.8 penalties.

–7th placed Kendal Lehari is the highest placed Canadian in the CCI3* field.

–Lauren Lambert owns the fastest time of the CCI3*, finishing just 5 seconds over the optimum and giving her fans back home in Kentucky something to cheer about.

–Emily Beshear and Here’s To You finished galloping strong after a great ride, but they added 15.6 time penalties to drop to 10th.  Still, this is definitely a pair to watch for the future and Emily has to be very happy with this horse’s first CCI3* round.

–Of the 22 CCI3* starters, only two didn’t finish the course, and both of them walked off still mounted.   Santa’s Playboy was eliminated on refusals at the second water and Buck pulled Titanium up at fence 25 because Titanium wasn’t going as well as he could and there’s no point risking a bad experience on such a nice horse at a 3*.  6 of the starters picked up at least a stop.

–The safety of today’s course is a testament to Derek Di Grazia’s great course designing, as well as Jay Hambly and the team of great builders who worked so hard preparing the course here at Bromont.

–Of the 107 three-day starters at Bromont today there were only 4 falls, and to my knowledge they were all horse falls.  As I mentioned in the 2* report, Samantha Galway was taken to the hospital after her horse stumbled on landing off the drop into the first water complex, but that was just to check that nothing was wrong with her leg and she should be fine.  Other than that, the medical personnel had an extremely boring day, thankfully.

–Speaking of boring, I’m getting tired of saying this at every single three-day, but Phillip did what Phillip does and all of his 4 horses finished clean with just over 20 total time penalties.  The 4 horses Phillip has here are horses of the future and they didn’t have the best weekend at Jersey but they all responded well today.  I have to say that Phillip getting horses around clean is so routine that it starts to seem normal, but I assure you that there is nothing ‘normal’ about his consistency every weekend and it’s fun to get to watch such an incredible XC rider so often.  The man just never misses.

–Speaking of great days, Kylie Lyman rode three horses in the CCI2* and all of them finished clear.  Phillip and Kylie together accounted for 20% of the CCI2* clear rounds.

–Not speaking of boring, Kyle Carter assisted with the announcing for the CCI3* rides, and if you know Kyle, it was every bit as colorful and hilarious as you might expect.  Some gems from Kyle’s color commentary include that eventing has really improved since riders started riding in clothes, UFO’s are reading our minds right now, and all the good horses in Ireland now live in North America.  Kyle also gave the most epic EN shout-out ever that had me doubled over laughing–again, if you know Kyle, you know it included some good natured humor at the expense of yours truly.

–During Kyle’s announcing, he talked a lot about what a hard worker Micheline Jordan is and it was good to see her finish a really quality ride with Irish Diamonds.  They go into the show jumping in 12th.

–Aside from Kyle, Geoff Morgan and Tigh Ryan did a marvelous job announcing the entire day, and I thank them for being my eyes and ears out there.

–The volunteers were wonderful as always fence judging and doing everything else to help the event run smoothly.  Also, the officials helped keep everything running smoothly and the day felt completely under control at all times.  Overall, everyone gets an A+ on execution.

–Clark has a one rail lead in the CCI3*, but the CCI2* is tightly packed at the top.  Phillip with Mighty Nice and Hannah Burnett with Harbour Pilot trail Rebecca Howard and Roquefort “Rocky” within a rail of the lead–Phillip is just 0.1 points back in second.  Rocky can jump though and I like Rebecca to come through in the clutch.

–I want to finish with a big shout out to all the grooms who will be working well into the night in this chilly Bromont weather to get the horses happy and sound for tomorrow.

The training division is just wrapping up as a great day of cross-country comes to a close here at Bromont.  Thanks for joining us and we’ll be back later on Eventing Nation with much more from Bromont.  Go eventing.

Your Bromont CCI2* XC Recap

Karen and Veronica coming to the ditch and wall

Rebecca Howard and Roquefort had 2 time penalties, but the riders close behind them had more time penalties meaning that they will take the lead going in to the show jumping tomorrow, just ahead of Phillip.  Click the link below for the latest CCI2* results.

Bromont CCI2* Results:

1. Rebecca Howard and Roquefort +2  49.4
2. Phillip Dutton and Mighty Nice +0  49.5
3. Hannah Burnett and Harbour Pilot +0  52.8
4. Karen O’Connor and Veronica  +4.8  53.4

The CCI2* video montage:

–Other than Samantha’s tumble the course rode really really well.  The riders were quite worried about the size of the course but aside from a few minor issues it seems like everyone had a great go of it.  The footing is maybe a bit firm and there are a lot of road crossings, but the horses were pulling up well at the box.

–Overall the horses were finishing the course pretty tired and the riders were reporting that the time was very tough to meet, which means that the CCI3* could get pretty competitive.

–I thought the quality of the horses in the 2* was very high–we got to see some really good jumpers.  Luna, Ben, and Downtown Harrison had some of the best jumps that I saw of the day.

–The food in the VIP tent was wonderful and I have to give the event a big thanks to the organizers for putting together a great environment for riders and owners alike.

The course change is just wrapping up and of course we need to give a big thanks to the volunteers for making the event possible.  I have been around the course now and everyone is very cheerful and enjoying the cool day.  Go eventing.

Will Coleman and Zipp Maintain the CCI* Lead

DSCN4354.JPG
Will Coleman and Zipp

Will finished just six seconds over the optimum time, so his 4.3 point dressage is enough to keep him in first.  Doug Payne was one of 9 CCI* double-clears to stay in second.  Fiona Allen and Isengart are in 3rd going into the show jumping.

CCI* XC Scores:

1. Will Coleman and Zipp +2.4  43.8
2. Doug Payne and Camerlingo +0  45.7
3. Fiona Allen and Isengart +0  47.9
4. Jamie Lee French and Speak of the Devil +0  53.2

[Live Bromont XC Scores]

Here’s a quick video montage of CCI* rides, now in beautiful technicolor.

–The best ride I saw in the CCI* was US rider Caroline Martin through the coffin.

–There were a few falls out on course but the announcers immediately announced that both the horse and rider were up and ok for all of them.

–Both of the announcers here today are doing a great job tag teaming the cross-country announcing.  One of hem, Geoff, is multilingual (some of our reader might remember our interview with him last year at Bromont) and he is announcing the rides in the language of the riders, including English, French, and Spanish.

–Your daily Canadian weather update: Bromont has a light cloud cover and a breeze on a cool day, but there’s no sign of rain yet.

One down, three divisions to go, as they say.  The CCI2* is just about to get started.  Go eventing.

Your Friday night Bromont training level recap

We’d be remiss here on Eventing Nation if we didn’t give a Friday night shout out to the training level competitors here at Bromont.  After all, they ae to jump that corner and arguably the relatively toughest course for and level out here tomorrow.  The training dressage rode one arena over from the CCI3* dressage on Friday and they competed with two judges and everything.  Mara is just one of six US competitors in the training division, but she made it count by taking the lead on a 41.9.  For academic purposes, Risa Moon, Rebekah Calder, Richard Moon, Jamie Lee French, and Hilary Maddaus are the other riders representing the red, white, and blue.

Bromont Training level dressage results:

1. Mara Depuy and Almit  41.9
2. Anita Nemtin Gilmour and Zindora  43.3
3. Peter Gray and Woodfield Nick  46.4
4. Jordan McDonald and Ramble On  47.0
5. Waylon Roberts and Faolan  47.4
6. Shandiss Wewoira and Prince Mayo  48.4
7. Risa Moon and Lily B  50.1
8. Hannah Rankin and Tighten Up  51.8
9. Jordan McDonald and Glencento  53.2
10.  Isabelle Boldue and Paprika  53.5

[Full Bromont Dressage Scores]

And oh yes, we have  competition video.  This video is of Liza Igochine and Karla, who had a bobble in the canter work but rode through it nicely to finish with a very solid test.

And a few other quick videos and notes from the training here at Bromont:

–Jordan McDonald has two horses–Glencento and Ramble on in the top 10 of the training division.  Samantha has just posted a video interview with Jordan over on her blog.

–Canadian Waylon Roberts has been training in England for a while now, but he took a quick trip home to compete Foalan in the trainin.  Here’s an interview with Waylon that Samantha jut posted on her blog.  As usual, we’ll post some of Samantha’s posts here on EN tonight and tomorrow, but head on over to her blog for much more from Bromont.

–Dear Eventing Nation servers.  Please do not crash because we have posted 100 videos in the last 10 posts and everyone is watching said videos at once.  Sincerely, John

–I have to give a huge shout out to Samantha for epic coverage as always.  I don’t know how she gets to so many interviews and great photos, but she does, and we are very grateful for it.

That’s all for now.  Good luck to all of the riders tomorrow in the XC, I’ll be around with a morning post to get everyone prepared for the action.  Until then, a busy night continues on EN with a Melbourne post from ESJ and Annie has the morning links coming your way as well. If you’re out and about tonight, stay safe and have fun. Go eventing.

Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen Lead the Bromont CCI3*

clarkloughanglen.jpg
Clark with his final salute

We almost could have just predicted the top two of the CCI3* leader board this morning and saved the judges the trouble of watching circles all day long.  Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen put together an almost faultless test to score a 39.0.  There’s always room for more movement, but Clark got every point possible out of his horse today.  Leslie Law and Rehy Lux finished the day in second with their 42.3.  Clark and Leslie are nearly 10 points ahead of the peloton, which is tightly packed in the 50’s.

Bromont CCI3* Dressage Results:

1. Clark Montgomery and Loughan GLen  39.0
2. Leslie Law and Rehy Lux  42.3
3. Kristin Bachman and Gryffindor  50.2
4. Emily Beshear and Here’s To You  50.6
5. Sharon White and Rafferty’s Rules  51.0
6. Carl Bouckaert and Raphael  51.2
7. Maxance McManamy and Beacon Hill  51.5

[Full Bromont Dressage Results]

15 of the 22 CCI3* riders scored in the 50’s today.  Clark and Leslie have obviously put themselves in position to make it a two horse competition.  But, if they take their time of have issues, the competition is wide open behind them.

–Kristin Bachman and Gryffidor found their great flatwork from a few years ago with a 50.2, which is good enough for third.  When Gryffindor is switched on, he is really hard to beat.

–The power of orange was out in force today.  Sharon White went low with a 51.0 on the pride of West Virginia, Rafferty’s Rules.  They go into the cross-country in 5th, just behind Emily Beshear and Here’s To You.

–Becky Holder’s new gray wonder horse is Can’t Fire Me, and although he’s not quite as expressive as Comet, Can’t Fire Me put in a great test.  The horse has a lovely canter and as his partnership develops with Becky their dressage will get better and better.

–One of Canada’s developing riders, Kendal Lehari had a solid test with Daily Edition.  It was one of those tests that was close to being really nice, but the judges kept picking away points from each movement.

–The two fastest riders in the CCI3*–Buck and Phillip–lurk in 9th and 10th place on William Penn and Absolute Liberty respectively.

Update: Diana Burnett’s test with Shigatzi

–Looking ahead to the cross-country, this is the first CCI3* for both Rehy Lux and Loughan Glen.  There is always a question of making the time in a horse’s first CCI3* because they have never run the distance before.  That being said, they each have advanced wins this spring and I feel like at least one of them will pull out a great performance tomorrow.

–The course here at Bromont is deceptively hilly so conditioning and efficient riding are going to be at a premium for those riders really trying to make the time.

That’s all for now.  The riders are all out walking their courses and enjoying a beautiful Canadian afternoon.  Go eventing.

US London Test Event Riders

Greenwich Park

As a quick afternoon note, the USEF has names their riders for the CIC2* London test event at Greenwich Park, July 4th to 6th.  As we mentioned earlire this week, Will Faudree will ride DHI Color Candy as part of his trip in England through Burghley.  The other two US riders are currently based in the UK.

From the USEF:

Will Faudree will ride Jennifer Mosing’s DHI Colour Candy. DHI Colour Candy is a 7-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding.

Logan Rawlings is from Piedmont, California but is based in the UK.  She will ride her own Jaybee Star Celebrity. Jaybee Star Celebrity is a 9-year-old Australian Warmblood mare.

Julian Stiller will ride her own Gunstone Wallstreet Gunstone.  Wallstreet is an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding.

The USEF will also send up to six High Performance athletes ‘on foot’ to observe the competition and learn about the venue. These athletes will be named shortly.

Leslie Law is excited for a Friday Morning Dressage Recap

DSCN4261.JPG
Max McManamy and Beacon Hill rode into 4th

Leslie and Rehy Lux were the last to ride before the lunch break but they saved the best for last, with the best test of the morning in the Bromont CCI3* by 8 points.  A 42.3 was no surprise for Rehy, who has been impressive on the flat all spring.  Emily Beshear and Here’s To You had a very accurate test for a 50.6.  Carl Bouckaert and Raphael of Belgium rode a lovely forward and relaxed test for a 51.2 and they sit in 3rd at the break.

Bromont CCI3* Dressage Lunchtime Scores

1. Leslie Law and Rehy Lux  42.3
2. Emily Beshear and Here’s to You  50.6
3. Carl Bouckaert and Raphael  51.2
4. Maxance McManamy and Beacon Hill  51.5
5. Amy Routh Borun and Santa’s Playboy  55.6

[Live Bromont Scores]

–Tamra Smith and Mar De Amor of Canada started the day off with a floaty test that included 3 foot perfect halts.  But an error and a bobble in the canter work held back their score.

–Comparing Tamra’s scores with some of the others today, the judges definitely seem to be preferring forward and consistent to big moving and floaty, to use the technical dressage terms.

–Emily Beshear and Here’s To You have a great shot at surprising a lot of people this weekend.  Thier 50.6 was no surprise for me as Emily is one of the best dressage riders in the CCI3* field today.

Update: Video of Emily and Here’s To You

–Leslie and Rehy looked like they were going to take the lead from the moment they started circling the arena.  The movement was both forward and fluid and the great thing is that it looks like there is more movement and more relaxation to be had for an even lower score.  Leslie’s wife Lesley doesn’t stop pacing during his tests.

–Beacon Hill presented a lovely picture with Max today and they represent the west coast well in 4th at the break.

–There were 3 errors in the morning sessions, two of which were for making the final halt a letter too late.

–Buck Davidson and Titanium had one of the best tests I have seen from them and I felt Titanium deserved a better mark than a 58.5.

–It’s a diverse leader board at the break with a British rider, a Virginian, a Belgian, and a West Coaster in the top 4 places.

–Mara Depuy is always a model of accuracy and she rode Fun Maker to the best score she could.  Fun Maker poked his nose big time in the first halt and there were other cheeky moments throughout the test.

The schizophrenic Canadian weather of Thursday has given way to a picture perfect sunny and cool Bromont day.  The training level and CCI3* are running simultaneously next to each other in the main arena.  We’ll have much more from both shortly and until then, go eventing.

Tiana Coudray — Greetings from Germany

Tiana Coudray and the lovely Ringwood Magister are making their second trip overseas in their young career together, this time to compete in the Luhmuhlen CIC3*, June 15th to 19th.  Tiana has kindly offered to keep Eventing Nation posted on their travels and the competition.  For more information on Tiana and her program, please visit her website.  Thanks for writing this Tiana and thank you for reading.
—-

From Tiana:

Greetings from Germany,

We arrived Wednesday morning into Amsterdam after a very easy flight from New York.  Kelly, Nat, and I then spent the next 4 hours or so drinking coffee and telling stories to keep ourselves awake while we waited for the horses to be cleared through customs.  After a little mishap when a lorry tire met a curb, a bit of joking around that us girls would be happy to change it so that they didn’t have to call a repair man, them calling the repair man anyway, and then it taking 3 men a lot of standing around scratching their heads, we eventually had a new tire on the lorry.  It was nearly noon when we set out for a “6 hour” drive across Holland and Germany.  I can’t say much about the drive as I was looking at the insides of my eyelids most of the time, but I can say that this country’s restrictions that truck drivers must stop and rest every few hours was getting to be more than a bit tedious.  If we had that in America, it would take me a week to drive across the country!

We finally arrived in Luhmuhlen Wednesday night and got the horses settled into a nice stable where we’re staying until the event next week.  By the time we went to check in to the hotel and try to find dinner it was 10:00.  The hotel staff informed us they were closed and only agreed to give us a room after we begged a little.  Then we walked into town where the only food we could find was a Chinese restaurant.  In a scene that was a little like an I love Lucy episode, we attempted to crack a double language barrier to order some food.  As the proprietors barely spoke German and not a bit of English, they eventually brought a menu that had a few clip-art pictures of animals so we could figure what the words for beef, chicken, pork, and fish were.  We were still stumped with one, and through some demonstrations of animal sounds, we eventually figured it was duck.    It’s a good thing the place was empty because the quacking and flapping our arms at the table would have definitely turned some heads.  We ended up with an excellent dinner and headed to bed.

Thursday we took it real easy on the horses, hand grazing them and organizing our tack for most of the day.  We went to a tack store on site that was floor to ceiling, packed denser than anything I’ve ever been to.  It was really impressive, but I managed to leave without buying anything.  Kelly and I walked into town and found some real necessities; carrots and apples for the horses, and cookies and chocolate for ourselves.  Now we’re ready to take Germany by storm! Jennie arrived in the afternoon and then we had a really nice dinner with a lot less gesturing and noise making.  Today we’ll give the horses an easy hacking day to stretch out their legs and then start to ramp things up later in the weekend.

The Calcutta Auction’s Friday News and Notes from FLAIR

calcuttateam.jpg
The aptly named Ocala Rednecks team encouraging the charity bidding

The Calcutta team auction to support Ryan, Caitlin, and Lillian was an unbelievable success Thursday night.  The 14 teams were auctioned for a total of $14,000 dollars.  More incredibly, Alan Shinton, the sponsor of the team challenge is personally matching the money raised from the acution, meaning that $28,000 total was raised Thursday night.  The plan is to give the money directly to Ryan, Caitlin, and Lillian (meaning writing a check) to help them immediately recover from the loss of everything they owned when their apartment burned down in the True Prospect Farm barn fire.  What a wonderful night of eventers coming together to support each other.

Because I know everyone wants to know, team Becky’s Beauties(Jon Holling, Becky Holder, and Doug Payne) won the highest bid–$3,100.  Some other creative team names include The Old Man and the Sea of Women (Stephen Bradley, Kristin Bachman, Ryann Quigley, and Mara Depuy), The Rainbow Warriors (Will Coleman, Buck Davidson, Emily Beshear, and Sharon White), and Girl Power (Liz Rickfels, Dornin North, Amy Borun, and Phillip Dutton).

Now for your eventing news and notes:

–There are 10 USEA events in the this weekend, and most of them start on Saturday.  So, I’m just very thankful that I don’t have Saturday morning links and have to explain them all and link to the live scores.  But, just to prove I can, I will list them all: Spring Run (KY), Aspen Farm (WA), Derbyshire (MI), Texas Rose, Queeny Park (MO), Valinor (MA), Plantation Field (PA), Copper Meadows (CA), Rubicon (VA), Larkin Hill (NY).  For the three eventers staying at home this weekend, thanks for keeping it tuned to Eventing Nation.  For everyone else, that’s why God made iPhones.

–Aspen farms horse trials starts in Washington today [Aspen Live Scores]

–The USDA has released a new report that indicates the rate at which new cases of equine EHV-1 are being discovered is slowing. This is the first really good news regarding the outbreak that started at that now infamous cutting horse championship in Utah in May.  The most report from the USDA said that more than 85 horses have tested positivein the US, and TheHorse.com claims that more than 10 Canadian horses are also EHV-1 positive. 13 horses have died or been euthanized in both countries total.  Fortunately, with the recent good news, some states are advising horse owners to return to normal activity with their horses.  [TheHorse.com]

–Lots of riders are wearing their helmets at Bromont–certainly a ton more than last year.  Speaking of which, Helmet Awareness Day is this Saturday. 10 helmet manufacturers and over 350 US retailers will be offering discounts on helmets purchased on Saturday to support the great effort of helmet awareness.

–The Encore Horse Trials (June 25-26) in Michigan will be accepting late entries. Please contact the secretary ([email protected]) if you plan on entering. There will be a $20 late fee for each entry and must be in by June 14th.  I remember one year back when I was in middle school, it was raining like heck at Encore and I was riding this great little pony, but she decided to stop in the show jumping warmup as I was on deck, no doubt due to something stupid I did.  I took a tumble into the mud and it was serious gut check time to hop back on, jump one more fence and then head into the arena.  But I did, and I jumped a clean round, and I’m a better person for it.  Good times.

–A short list of every other blog from Thursday that I could find: Allison is leaning towards Burghley with Arthur, Kristin Schmolze looks ahead to the future, Valerie V judged the combined test at Hidden Hollow, Elinor MacPhail’s plan B, C, or D

–SmartPak has posted a great webinar about metabolic disorders [SmartPak blog]

–The FLAIR Facebook photo contest winner is an eventer– Katy Groesbeck from LA.  Katy wins 5 FLAIR strips and a FLAIR microfiber strip rag to prepare the muzzle for applying the strips.  Additionally, as Coren mentioned yesterday, FLAIR is sponsoring the PDutty eventing camp next week.  The attendees will get FLAIR strips as well as attend FLAIR seminars on respiratory health.

–Right before the competitor’s reception Thursday night, I was doing what I do most Thursday nights at events.  You know, sitting in front of my computer typing, minding my own business.  And then it started to hail.  Canadian weather is the inspiration for the latest of our worst videos ever:

Veronica’s CCI2* dressage recap

DSCN4212.JPG
Phillip circling the arena with Mighty Nice as Jon leaves with Downtown Harrison

Rebecca Howard is the only Canadian in the top 10 of the CCI2* but she is in the lead for Canada.  Like Will in the CCI*, she maintained her lead all day long despite a vigorous assault from the some of the USA’s best riders.  Karen O’Connor and Veronica moved into second and Phillip Dutton jumped into 3rd with Mighty Nice.

Bromont CCI2* Final Dressage

1. Rebecca Howard and Roquefort  47.4
2. Karen O’Connor and Veronica  48.6
3. Phillip Dutton and Mighty Nice  49.5
4. Phillip Dutton and Ben  50.3
5. Michael Pollard and Schoensgreen Hanni  50.7
6. Stephen Bradley and In The Fog  51.9
7. Jonathan Holling and Downtown Harrison  52.6
8. Hannah Burnett and Harbour Pilot  52.8
9. Phillip Dutton and Young Man  53.3

[Full Bromont Dressage Scores]

–Phillip has three horses competition in the CCI2*–all three are in the top 10 and he is the only rider with multiple horses in the top 10.

–I would guess that between half and three quarters of the riders in the competition today wore helmets, with more CCI* riders than CCI2* riders wearing them.

A shout out to fellow Charlottesvilleian Dornin North:

–Karen had a lovely test today with Veronica and was rewarded with a 48.6.  Team Rebecca bought Veronica for Karen earlier this spring and it’s clear that this mare has a promising future.

–Jon Holling finished the day with two horses in the top 13–Downtown Harrison and King’s Ransom.  It’s great to see Jon doing well with two very nice horses.

–Hannah Burnett and Harbor Pilot stepped into the top 10 this afternoon.  They had a quality test but left a lot of points on the table in the canter work.

–Diana Burnett withdrew Diamond Cut before the dressage following a consultation with the officials.  The sarcoids that they discussed with Diana after the jog yesterday were ultimately just too much of a concern and it was deemed likely that they would have to eliminate her during the dressage or XC.  It’s a frustrating situation where Diamond Cute has successfully completed two FEI events so far this year, but ultimately it is the ground jury’s call.  In a real gesture of kindness, the organizers refunded Diana’s entry check.

–Buck Davidson and Carl Segal’s Park Trader had all at once one of the nicest and one of the worst tests of the day.  Park Trader showed moments of extremely lovely work interspersed with moments of complete disobedience.  He never looked unhappy–just very cheeky.

–Kylie Lyman has a monopoly on the 20’s–she is 24th, 25th, and 27th with Garrison Flash, Trading Aces, and Dauntless Hear respectively.

–The weather was marvelously cooperative all day long.  There were a few showers early, but those gave way to a partly cloudy and windy day to help keep the heat away.

That’s all for now.  Stay tuned to Eventing Nation for more from Bromont soon and an exciting day of CCI3* and training level dressage on Friday.  Go eventing.

Bromont CCI* Dressage Recap

DSCN4204.JPG
Penny Rowland finished a nice test with Northwind’s Breeze to become the highest placed Canadian

There were a lot of quality rides Thursday afternoon in the CCI*, but no one could quite catch Will Coleman and Zipp.  Will takes a 4.3 point lead into the cross-country.  Doug Payne and Camerlingo moved into second on a 45.7 and Fiona Allen moved into 3rd with Isengart.

CCI* Final Dressage Scores:

1. Will Coleman and Zipp  41.4
2. Doug Payne and Camerlingo  45.7
3. Fiona Allen and Isengart  47.9
4. Penny Rowland and Northwind’s Breeze  50.9
5. Kyle Carter and Chesterland’s Knockout  51.2
6. Ryann Quigley and Ardfield Rover  51.5

[Full Bromont Scores]

–The USA reclaimed supremacy in the CCI* this afternoon and the red white and blue now has four pairs in the top six.

–I love watching eventing families competing together at the same event.  Lee Lee Jones had a very professional test aboard the very nice Model Cadet with Phillip and the rest of her family looking on proudly.  Lee Lee is tied for 10th and Phillip rode his three 2* horses into the top 10 today, making it a great day for the family.

We’ll have a CCI2* report shortly.  Go eventing.

Roquefort Gives Canada the Lunchtime 2* Lead

Rebecca Howard was the last to go before the lunch break in the CCI2* and a crowd of her fans gathered to watch a ride we all knew had a great chance to take the lead.  She had a really uncharacteristic error early in her test that made David shake his head with a frustrated smile, but the rest of the test was good enough to take the lead with a 47.4 so David can’t be all that mad.

Bromont CCI2* Lunchtime Scores

1. Rebecca Howard and Roquefort  47.4
2. Phillip Dutton and Ben  50.3
3. Michael Pollard and Schoensgreen Hanni  50.7
4. Stephen Bradley and In The Fog  51.9
5. Phillip Dutton and Young Man  53.3
6. Jon Holling and King’s Ransom  55.3

[Full Scores]

–Phillip Dutton had two great rides this morning, with Young Man sitting in fifth and Ben in second half way through the division.  Ben in particular showed off some really lovely gaits today.

–Schoensgreen Hanni is owned by Michael Pollard’s wife Nathalie, but Michael has the ride to potentially campaign for the Pan American Games.  The beautiful gray mare is one of my favorite horses anywhere.

–Jon Holling’s King’s Ransom is a bit unconfirmed but he showed this morning that he is one of the best movers here at Bromont.  I can’t wait to see this horse in a year, but they are in good position today with a 55.3.

–Stephen Bradley’s lovely In The Fog picked up right where they left off at Jersey with a strong dressage test.

The sun is shining now and the temperature is rising here in Quebec.  The afternoon riders hope the scores will do the opposite.  Thanks for joining us throughout the day for all things Bromont.  Stay classy Eventing Nation.

Will Coleman and Zip lead the Bromont CCI* at Lunchtime

DSCN4140.JPG
Shandiss Wewiora is one of many riders wearing their helmets today

I filmed 4 rides this morning and two of them are in the lead–which is testament to luck and EN Karma.  One of those was Will Coleman and Zipp, who put together a lively forward test to take the lunchtime lead in the CCI*.  The CCI* and CCI2* are running simultaneously today but both rings are in the main arena, making for a great spectating experience.

CCI* Lunchtime Scores:

1. Will Coleman and Zipp  41.4
2. Kyle Carter and Chesterland’s Knockout  51.2
3. Erin MacDonald and Tobiaz  53.2
4. Elizabeth Ricklefs and Snap Decision  54.1
5T. Shandiss Wewoira and Rockfield Grant Juan  55.8
5T Lindsay Beer and Karma  55.8

[Full Scores]

–Kyle Carter was part of the three stooges musketeers trailer ride up from Ocala, Florida along with Jon Holling and Leslie Law.  Kyle made the trip well worth it today with a 51.2 and sits in second.  Kyle is coming back from the tough fall and a broken wrist at Red Hills earlier this year, but you’d never know it from his riding.

–Canada holds 4 of the top 6 positions in the CCI* at the lunch break, with Kyle, Erin, Shandiss, and Lindsay all riding for the fighting maple leafs.

I’ll be back shortly with the CCI2* morning report and until then, go eventing.

Update on Catch a Star

Caitlin Silliman’s Catch a Star is the only remaining horse from the True Prospect fire in the New Bolton Equine Hospital.  Before the fire, Catch a Star had just placed second in the Jersey 2* with Caitlin.  Caitlin was kind enough to write us a quick update on Catch a Star as she continues to recover.

catchastar1.jpg

From Caitlin:

Catch a Star is the last horse in the ICU at New Bolton. She is in good spirits and seems to be on the right track to a full recovery. She is allowed to hand graze early in the morning and late at night when the sun is not out. We hope to bring her home in a week depending on how she feels as she starts to come off her pain medications.

Your Bromont Preview and Other Random Notes

DSCN3974.JPG
Pictures just can’t capture how scenic it is here at Bromont

The Bromont dressage is just starting with the CCI* and CCI** competing today.  The CCI3* and training level compete on Friday.  Here is a quick selection of notes that Annie might call random, but that are actually carefully designed and custom fit for your reading pleasure.

[Live Bromont Scores, Tentative Schedule PDF]

1) The competitors reception at 6:00pm today will host a very special Calcutta auction to raise funds for Lillian, Ryan, and Caitlin, whose apartment was destroyed in the True Prospect fire.  The Calcutta event will auction off teams competing in the Alan Shinton Team Challenge. These teams will be comprised of a CCI*, CCI** and a CCI*** horse and rider combination and from what I have heard the team names are awesome and ridiculous at the same time.  From what I hear, Phillip is on a team named ‘Girl Power’ and I’m not sure Phillip has been told.

Of the money raised from the auction 50% will be divided between Lillian, Caitlin and Ryan. The other 50% will go to the “owners” of the top 3 teams with a 50/30/20 split.  From speaking with the organizers on Wednesday, they are going to make sure the money gets directly to Lillian, Woodsy, and Caitlin.  Word is that Jon holling is going to do something outrageous to raise as much money for his team as possible, so, needless to say, I won’t be missing the auction.  As the saying goes, hide yo’ kids, hide yo’ wife.  Additionally, Mark and David will both be picking teams from their respective coaching countries to make an international team competition.

2) Speaking of True Prospect, it’s great to see Phillip and Abbie out here competing this weekend.  Jennie told me yesterday that Ping has arrived safely in Europe, so True Prospect is being proudly represented all over the world this weekend.  One other note that I had forgotten until Annie’s video post on Wednesday is that Minotaure du Passoir won the CCI* here last year with Boyd.  It’s amazing that Min was released from the hospital just a day before Bromont started.

3) Using my extensive training in meteorology, called the Weather Channel, the weather is expected to get cooler and cooler here at Bromont, with scattered thunderstorms predicted for today, Saturday, and Sunday.  [Weather]

4) Samantha mentioned to me yesterday that the course looked like a mini-Rolex track and I responded by saying that I wouldn’t call it a ‘mini-anything.’  You can see from the jump by jump photos we posted yesterday that the course is massive.  The course follows last year’s track almost exactly and many of the jumps are the same.  The coffin caused a few issues last year and that was changed to a brush vertical on the out for this year.  Course desiner Derek Di Grazia really likes angled brush fences and brush in general–brush is a great technique to keep the horses off of the solid part of the fences.

5) The training course is probably the hardest one I have ever seen.  I probably shouldn’t have told that to two young training level riders at the Ecogold booth who hadn’t walked the course yet, but I did.  Their Mom seemed a lot more worried about it than they did.

DSCN4004.JPG
The biggest training level corner I have ever seen

6) I’m just going to write my CCI3* picks before I think about it too much.  1. Mar De Amor, 2. Loughan Glen, 3. Rehy Lux, with Here’s to You as my dark horse pick–because he’s a dark bay.

7) You know that point where good shoes become barn shoes?  After two course walks yesterday, I am so there.

DSCN4003.JPG

8) Oh, and I almost forgot, I’m supposed to give a shout out to Donna, who is sadly stuck at work in Ontario, from everyone in the show office.

9) As we always do as the competition begins, I want to wish all of the horses and riders the best of luck this weekend from all of us around Eventing Nation.  However your ride goes today, remember there are two more phases waiting on the weekend.

Go eventing.

The return of the worst videos ever

Well friends, after an extended sabbatical, our ‘worst videos ever’ series is back and better worse than ever.  For the uninitiated, the ‘worst videos ever’ started during some of our first live event coverages, when I would walk abound the venue and make random observations and ridiculous comments.  For old time’s sake, here’s video with me wandering around the beautiful Bromont equestrian center talking about everything I love about Bromont.  I’d also like to thank Buck for doing a quick interview, it was certainly the best part of the video.  [Last year’s worst Bromont video ever]

The Ground Jury is excited for a Bromont jog report

bromontjog5.jpg
Ground jury member Christian Landholt always makes a fashion statement at the jogs

I’m never going to make cold weather jokes about Canada again.  The Bromont sun shined down on the jog strip all afternoon, raising temperatures into the 90’s, Fahrenheit.  There were 7 holds today, 3 horses were spun, and the ground jury requested more than 15 rejogs.  It was hard to see some horses not make it through out the first jog considering the journey most people made to get to Bromont, but in general I though the ground jury made good decisions with the horses they decided to hold.  In terms of who got spun, you never know what went on in the holding area, so it’s hard to tell.

Of the CCI* horses, Menuet and Lambert were held, and Menuet was spun upon representation.  In the CCI2* Irish Dreams, Woodrow III, Smarty Pants, and Roquefort were all held.  Irish Dreams and Woodrow III were not accepted on representation.  Medici was held in the CCI3* but passed on reinspection.

109 horses will go onto the CCI dressage tomorrow, and that doesn’t include the large training level division.

DSCN4075.JPG

In a very strange moment in the CCI2* jog, Diana Burnett had a long conversation with the ground jury after her jog.  Her horse, Diamond Cut, has significant sarcoids on his right stifle.  Although the horse looked very sound, the ground jury originally wanted to eliminate it because they were concerned about the sarcoids breaking open over a jump on the XC and bleeding.  However, after discussing the issue with Diana, she will ride dressage and then the ground jury will reevaluate the issue.  The horse has done numerous intermediates and 2*’s and Diana told me they have never been a problem on XC.

I apologize in advanced for the photos. As my ex-girlfriends say, ‘it’s not you, it’s me.

bromontjog2.jpg
It was great to see Phillip out today representing true prospect.  He jogged Model Cadet for stepdaughter Lee Lee Jones along with his 4 other horses.  Abbie Golden is here this weekend with Arundel in the CCI1*.
