Rolex Fun Facts

Dr. Chris Newton and I were arguing talking about how the Brits seem to own the Rolex 4 * event, which prompted me to come back and do a little research! The inaugural 4* was held in 1998 and was won by New Zealand’s Nick Larkin on Red. Two years later, in 2000, Blyth Tait won the title again for New Zealand but that was the last time the kiwis were victorious in Kentucky.

IMG_4682.jpg
Karen O’Connor split those years, winning Rolex in 1999, and her husband David, took the title the year after Blyth in 2001.
IMG_4861.jpg
America have won it more than any other country but with only four riders – Karen and David, Kim Severson (Vinoski) and Phillip Dutton. Kim won it the year after David in 2002, and then twice more, in 2004 and 2005. Phillip Dutton won it in 2008.
IMG_4550.jpg
The Brits and the Aussies tie with 3 wins each. Pippa Funnell was first for GB, winning Rolex Kentucky and the Grand Slam in 2003, then Andrew Hoy evened the score for Australia in 2006. Clayton Fredericks kept the title down under the following year,
IMG_5426.jpg
but it returned home to the US with Phillip Dutton in 2008. Lucinda Fredericks won in 2009 on her little mare, Headley Britannia
IMG_4239.jpg
and of course for the last two years it’s been a thoroughly English affair – going to William Fox-Pitt and Cool Mountain in 2010,
IMG_5598.jpg
and with Mary taking both 1st and 2nd places this year.
IMG_4295.jpg
Not really sure what the point of our discussion was, or if anyone proved a point, but it’s quite interesting. To me, anyway. Or maybe I can’t let Rolex go! I hate the end of three days!

Sunday afternoon at Rolex – Result!

IMG_5590.jpg

Remington’s owners Ron and Densey Juvonen (thanks to USEF’s Sarah Ike for the heads up!)

What an exciting day for the Brits – Mary King rode like the champion she is to take the first two spots at Rolex. Sinead was terrific to take third, but even more endearing when overcome by emotion on finishing her round, and didn’t stop crying for quite a long time, she may still be teary now!

IMG_5542.jpg
Rails were expensive and Clayton dropped down a couple of places with one down.
IMG_5571.jpg
Everyone was sad that Mark Todd didn’t jump NZB Grass Valley, he withdrew right before the show-jumping started, but helped Joe Meyer warm up. From what I understand Grass Valley will be fine.
IMG_5573.jpg
James Alliston, a Brit in California, had a terrific Rolex finishing 2 in the top 20.  I spoke to him earlier this morning and hope to have that interview up if not tonight, then some time tomorrow.
IMG_5605.jpg
Fernhill Urco, 2nd, watches and waits while his stable mate jumps for the win. They’re tearing down the media centre around us, so I have to pack up my things, pick Leo up from the railings downstairs, and find somewhere else to go. Thanks for staying with me, I’ll bring you more soon, hopefully, and go eventing!

2nd Trot-up – the 4th Phase!

Although I awoke to thunder and more rain this morning with a groan, the rain magically stopped a few minutes into the  beginning of the trot-up, and since then we’ve had a mixed bag of wind, sun, and falling temperatures.  A few riders had already been out in the worst of it for a hack on their horses, but most were hunkered down, trotting them up in hand in rain sheets, and huddling under the aisles. However, once they arrived in front of the ground jury, they all put on a brave face. Hamish Cargill was held, but passed upon re-inspection. I think Hamish was probably grateful to Clayton Fredericks and Graham Potts for their support.  Everyone else passed with no problem, although Michael Pollard didn’t present Wonderful Will.

Now I must rush off to watch the show-jumping and see if Mary can pull off a one-two. What a wonderful afternoon to go eventing.

Oliver Townend – eventer & entrepreneur

Oliver Townend is a man who hardly ever sits still, let alone takes a holiday – he did have a week in the winter. Luckily he says he loves what he does, because he’s just embarked on a new venture with businesswoman Nina Barbour, and kindly sat down with me before the show-jumping at the Rolex 4* 3 Day Event to tell me more about it.

I can’t wait to see Oliver and Power Line here next year, and will keep track of Team Townend meanwhile, via Facebook and twitter. Thanks for chatting, Oliver, and go eventing!

The woman from WEG that Mark Todd requests at Rolex

Last year at the World Equestrian Games, Mark Todd, and a few other members of the Kiwi team used acupuncture on their horses, and Holly Schmitt administered it for them. Mark was so impressed with the results that on his return to the Kentucky Horse Park this spring for the Rolex Kentucky 4* Three Day Event, he tasked Sarah Ike of the USEF with hunting Holly down so she could come back and treat NZB Grass Valley again.  I caught up with her after she’d finished treating Riley/Grass Valley, and she’d started on the grooms who were all singing her praises!

Below is Alex, William’s groom getting her neck and shoulder treated. She did indeed get it cranked right up, higher than a lot of horses can take it!

IMG_1356.jpg

Afterwards however, she got up, brushed Neuf off and took him for a graze before settling him down for the night. The international horses all looked great. Neuf pulled a front shoe at the third from last, but they went and found and had it put straight back on, and he seemed terrific. Two of the other grooms, Frasier and Nicki were also walking around with the “thumb tack” needles in, and Nicki swore by her treatment, telling me it was the first time she’d been comfortable standing up all day. Thank you to Holly for explaining it to us, and for doing such a terrific job on the horses, and their grooms. Thank you for reading, and go eventing.

Nunn Finer

As tempted as I am to make this post all about Mary, William and Oliver who all sit in the top 10 overnight after fantastic clear rounds, it’s actually about one of Eventing Nation’s sponsors, an eventer, and one of the most successful and innovative businessmen in the sport – John Nunn.

It’s always exciting to see people in the horse world embrace new media, especially someone as influential as John who does it so well.  He told me he’s a big fan of TED talks, which you can watch for free via facebook or podcast, and are brilliant. Thanks for talking to us, John, and I hope you get some down time next week.

Manoir de Carneville – WOW!

Sinead Halpin confirmed the promise she’s been showing all spring, and in fact for the last few years, piloting her lovely french chestnut, Manoir de Carneville into 4th place overnight, the 2nd french horse in the top 6 (Neuf des Coeurs sits in 6th after a masterful round by WIlliam, and Portugese Fernhill Urco flies the European flag in 2nd for Mary King!).  I caught up with Sinead’s thrilled groom Meg right after cross country and asked her about the day,

Tate, as he’s known had all four shoes on, and dragged Meg back to the stables after our chat! Thanks for stopping, Meg, and best of luck tomorrow. What a fantastic day to go eventing at Rolex.

Michael Pollard and Icarus, almost home

I spent so long trying to decide where the best place to be was, and then changing my mind, and getting nervous that I actually didn’t get very many pictures today, and there were so many wonderful photographers out on course – please check out the USEA website, and the Chronicle amongst others, but I’m just going to put the few I did take up here anyway.

Hamish Cargill was flying on Sandhills Tiger, and I spoke to Bols after who sais Hamish told her it was really difficult to get going again up the big hills following his hold. They looked terrific the whole way round apart from the two bobbles in the hollow.

The trot up is at 8:30 tomorrow morning and show jumping starts at 1pm. The weather forecast is not good, but we are in for another fabulous day’s sport. Thanks for sticking with us and go eventing!

Mary King leads the way

Experience showed when Mary King blazed round the cross country this morning on her homebred mare King’s Temptress, storming into the lead, and never let go as I write this. I caught up with her grazing her little mare later, and talked to her about her ride. Excuse the wind noise, but as it’s doing such a good job drying out the ground, we can’t complain too much!

Mary had another great round on Fernhill Urco this afternoon. Thank you for talking to us, Mary, and go eventing.

Cross country is underway

The morning session has almost finished and the course has claimed it’s fair share of scalps. While I was out walking and watching, I bumped into Doug Payne pretty early on,

and then I saw Clayton later over by the double of corners and had a quick chat,
Good luck, Australia, and Britain, and of course the rest of the world. Cross country resumes after lunch under cloudless blue skies, a perfect day to go eventing.

Cross country morning

Most of the riders this morning were walking the course solo, in intense concentration, striding out determinedly, but Hamish Cargill was kind enough to stop for a few words.
Best of luck to Hamish and Tiger later. The sun is shining and there’s a gentle breeze, and the ground crew are working extremely hard in an effort to maximise their effects.  There’s gravel at every fence, and in some of the squishy bits in between. I walked some of the course with Red HIlls course designer Hugh Lochore, who having designed courses in Scotland and Ireland knows all about wet going, and shared his thoughts on Derek’s inaugural four star course with me.
Wishing everyone safe and happy rounds today, especially the Brits! Go Eventing at the Rolex 4*!

PS. Just because there’s a tough day of cross country ahead, doesn’t stop the Canuck’s from throwing a party, and nothing will stop Doug Payne from branding! Check out his sleeve! Jessie Phoenix affectionately teased him that he should be in Nascar!

Buck Davidson & Owner Carl Segal

Buck Davidson is sitting well down the order after the dressage on Titanium, but as all the riders concur, Rolex 2011 is not going to be a dressage competition. As Buck proved with his 21st place at Badminton recently, finishing best of the North Americans, and coaxing a clear round out of Ballynoecastle RM, he’d be a hard man to bet against when the going gets tough.  I talked to him and his owner, Carl Segal briefly, after the first phase.

Thanks so much for talking to us, we look forward to seeing you both in England next to flying the Stars and Stripes, but first of all, have a great ride this weekend, and go eventing!

Friday Dressage Photos

IMG_4985.jpg

Mark Todd attracted a large crowd, even in the warm-up, of both spectators and riders, perhaps hoping some of that magic might rub off on them!

IMG_4990.jpg
I saw Mark walking the course yesterday at Fence 7, the coffin, and asked him if coming here straight off a Badminton win gave him an extra boost, but he said not really, “Different horse, different event, different course…” I was also going to ask him if he would do a video course walk of that combination with me, but the pump in the ditch was so noisy it was hopeless, but he just shrugged, looked at me like I was an eedjit, and said, “Jump in, one stride, over the ditch, one stride, and jump out!”! If you’re Mark Todd, it’s that easy!
Later on yesterday afternoon, I was very lucky to “Ride the Rolex Course” for Horse and Hound, and our “tour guide” was David O Connor, western style, on a lovely grey horse called Shameless, and he said in 30 years he’s never seen so much water in the Kentucky Horse Park.
IMG_5019.jpg
Clayton Fredericks’ Be My Guest: what a nice horse, with that large head, floppy ears and floaty paces. She looked like she might begin to get a little on the forehand, but Clayton rode her really positively and actively, apart from an error of course, and they currently sit in 10th place.
IMG_5090.jpg
Another lovely grey from the West Coast, Kristi Nunnink’s R-Star

Coincidentally, both kiwis Joe Meyer and Snip (above), and Mark Todd sit in 17th place after dressage.

Jessica Phoenix on her lovely little WEG horse, Exponential, who stands barely 16hh, but packs a hell of a jump.
IMG_5158.jpg
William on the lovely Neuf des Coeurs, who had a hard time overcoming a sticky start in his test, and of course in my extremely biased opinion was robbed! William and I also watched Oliver’s test together earlier, (when Leo was stolen by an official, for fear he’d be stolen!) and we both agreed that we miss seeing the judges’ marks on the scoreboard, instead of the cumulative percentage.
IMG_5178.jpg
The cross country course is drying out slowly, the sun has come in and out all day, but the wind has been a constant and welcome, albeit chilly presence.  Thank you so much for staying with us, we’re all excited about tomorrow, and I can’t wait to bring you lots more from Rolex and go eventing!

William’s other ride…

IMG_1321.jpgWilliam Fox-Pitt is not only undeniably one of the best riders in the world, but also one of the most popular, which means that he has hordes of fans who want to know everything about him. He was happy to tell me all about his new car, a lovely Jeep, and while I had him in close quarters I asked him a few other nosy questions!

Thank you so much for talking to us, William, and I know I speak for a multitude when I say how relieved I am that we’ll be able to continue to watch you compete for some years to come. Best of luck this weekend, and go eventing!

Please meet Clare

I was very lucky to meet Clare this afternoon; she may possibly be one of the busiest girls here at Rolex 2011, but also one of the luckiest, and what a great ambassador for the Pony Club. Clare very kindly stopped to chat for a couple of minutes to describe her duties.

Well done, Clare, and thank you so much for talking to us, we hope you enjoy the rest of the event. See you tomorrow and Go Eventing!

Jessica Hampf & Jan Byyny at The Head of the Lake

Jan Byyny has been helping Jessica Hampf both with the dressage,
IMG_4948.jpg
but she also walked the cross country with her this morning. I caught up with them this morning at the Head of the Lake, and asked them how they’re going to approach it.
Jessica’s horse, High Society may be Australian, but check out her Canuck pride!
IMG_4968.jpg
Thanks to you both for sharing your insights, and best of luck on Saturday Jessica.
