Please meet Clare

I was very lucky to meet Clare this afternoon; she may possibly be one of the busiest girls here at Rolex 2011, but also one of the luckiest, and what a great ambassador for the Pony Club. Clare very kindly stopped to chat for a couple of minutes to describe her duties.

Well done, Clare, and thank you so much for talking to us, we hope you enjoy the rest of the event. See you tomorrow and Go Eventing!

Jessica Hampf & Jan Byyny at The Head of the Lake

Jan Byyny has been helping Jessica Hampf both with the dressage,
IMG_4948.jpg
but she also walked the cross country with her this morning. I caught up with them this morning at the Head of the Lake, and asked them how they’re going to approach it.
Jessica’s horse, High Society may be Australian, but check out her Canuck pride!

Thanks to you both for sharing your insights, and best of luck on Saturday Jessica.

Peter Atkins is back at Rolex, in a different capacity

I’m very happy to report that Peter Atkins is back at the Kentucky Horse Park, not riding, which makes him rather cross, but busy nonetheless.  I managed to collar him into looking at Fence 9 with us, and of course giving us an update on Henny.

Thanks for the update, Peter; we’ll all look forward to seeing you back here next year with Henny, and watching you helmet-cams again.

Tipperary Liadhnan – Sarah’s “great white masterpiece”

Kim Seversen has a reputation for being very strong on the flat, and also for always being immaculately turned out. Today for the dressage at Rolex of course was no exception, Paddy almost gleamed he was so white. Sarah has worked for Kim Seversen since July, and calls Paddy her “great white masterpiece”. She kindly revealed some of her secrets to getting him so clean, on her way back to the barn.
After the first day, Kim and Paddy sit in 4th place on a score of 48.5. I’m really impressed by Sarah’s french braid in the forelock which were always beyond me, and I ended up just putting little plaits in that looked balls.

Thursday Afternoon at Rolex 2011

I spent some of the lunch break watching a few of tomorrow’s horses working in the arenas up by the barns.  I hadn’t seen Snip, Joe Meyer’s NZ Thoroughbred, in person before, and I like him a lot.

IMG_4872.jpg
Bettina Hoy, who’s here until tomorrow, was helping Michael Pollard again, this time on Wonderful WIll, who couldn’t be a more different horse to Icarus, but still looked impressive.
IMG_4925.jpg
However, the horse that really blew me away was Rebecca Howard’s Riddle Master; he’s improved again even since The Fork, and looked like a real dressage horse – cadence, softness, impulsion. I was practically drooling, and hope they can bring it into the arena tomorrow.  Once again, my photos do not do this pair justice, oh where is Nico Morgan when I need him?!
IMG_4904.jpg
Meanwhile, this couple were getting a jump on saturday’s cross country, studying Jimmy Wofford’s Rolex form,
IMG_4941.jpg
The course is definitely drying out with the help of a cool breeze and sunny conditions, although Derek Di Grazia told us there will still be water in the sunken road on saturday, not as much as there is now, but definitely some.  The ditch in the coffin at fence 7 is overflowing currently, despite a pump running 24/7, and the ground by the double of corners is very, very wet, and Aaron Rust was busy digging a trench there to try and divert some of the standing water. We do have one more day of similar conditions tomorrow, so it’s a game of wait and see. In the meantime we have some great combinations to look forward to in the dressage arena on Friday, so settle in and go eventing at Rolex 2011!

Reese Koffler-Stanfield got dressage underway at the Kentucky Horse Park, performing the test ride at the Rolex 2011 Three Day Event presented by Bridgestone. Reese is a popular local Grand Prix dressage rider who trains a number of eventers, and is helped by Jessica Ransehousen, pictured.

Allison Springer got things off to a good start with the test we’ve come to expect from her and Arthur, moving into an early lead with a score of 42.3. Sadly, hardly anyone was around to see it; maybe it’s the cold, or maybe because as a few of the regulars maintain, it’s just thursday dressage at Rolex, but the stands are practically empty.

IMG_1289.jpg

Phillip Dutton squeezed the best work he could out of Fernhill Eagle, refusing to let him give him second best; intense concentration and sheer force of will saw them both sweating despite the cool breeze and chilly temperatures.

Phillip wore a ribbon on his lapel in memory of Rebecca Broussard who used to own the horse.
IMG_4811.jpg
Mary King’s homebred mare King’s Temptress looked relaxed in the warm-up, although Mary blamed herself for mistakes in the changes. As in the trot-up, the English were very strict about putting boots on the horse as soon as it had finished the dressage, although Phillip’s horse wearing front boots to warm up was the only US horse that bothered so far, and all the US horses I saw hacked back to the stables bare-legged.

The Calm before the Storm (but hopefully not!)

IMG_4793.jpg

Tiana Coudray grazing her horses this morning

I think I speak for everyone, not only here at the Kentucky Horse Park, but across the South, that we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when we woke up this morning to blue skies, the sun, and a cool breeze – perfect conditions to start drying out the saturated ground and waterlogged course.

Dressage will be underway shortly, and the mood in the park is quiet and anticipatory. Some horses were hacking, I saw Hannah Sue Burnett walking back along the steeplechase trail on a very well-behaved St Barths, and Missy Ransenhouse on Critical Decision who looks great, but apparently had “woken up”!

IMG_4796.jpg
Others were having flat lessons, or lunging, and some were grazing.  Laine Ashker was searching for four leaf clovers with Anthony Patch, she said she found six last year, and saw a few yesterday while walking the course, but hadn’t found any yet this morning, perhaps Al had eaten them!  Alex Van Tuyll, William Fox-Pitt’s groom told me last night she found four yesterday, so she was convinced that Neuf des Couers was going to win, and I certainly wouldn’t bet against her or William!

IMG_4797.jpg
Dressage starts shortly, so I’m headed up to the main arena. I’ll bring you more later, thanks for checking in this morning, we’re drying out and going eventing!

Run for Cover!

It was a surreal situation this morning when all the Rolex entries, and the Kentucky Cup Reining horses were herded into the Alltech Arena to hunker down until the tornado (warning) had passed. Surprisingly, all the horses behaved really well, most of them standing quietly; dogs had a blast visiting with each other, and most of the people treated it like an impromptu cocktail party, working the room and catching up. Gradually the longer we stayed in there, the louder the chatter became, and surely, if there’s another evacuation someone will think to bring a cooler or two!

IMG_1254.jpg
Check out Arthur’s rope halter, and also how organised Allison Springer is – seriously impressive!

Inexplicably, reiner Shane Brown handed his horse to Missy Ransehousen and promptly disappeared. When he did return we made the most of the opportunity, (captive audience, literally!) to ask him a few questions about this weekend’s competition.

Thanks for talking to us, Shane, and thanks for holding the horse, Missy. You’ll be glad to know we were let out shortly afterwards, and the weather is supposed to improve after another round of showers tonight, – it’s pouring down rain as I write.  Thanks for letting us bring Rolex to you, it all gets under way proper with the first horse in the ring at 10am. Stay warm and dry, and go eventing at Rolex!

Stormy Wednesday Trot-up at Rolex

IMG_4498.jpg

In a morning that had already seen every horse entered at Rolex evacuated to the Alltech Indoor Arena, the trot-up was delayed an hour, and then ran the gamut weather-wise, beginning in a downpour, and finishing under blue skies and a determined sun.

Most people took advantage of the sun after the trot-up to squeeze in a quick ride before the riders’ briefing at 1pm. After the briefing, and a delicious lunch, most riders were heading out to walk the course, hoping to beat the rain that’s forecast to fall again this afternoon. I’m off to see what’s going on and will bring you more reports later. Thanks for reading, hunker down and go eventing!

Tuesday at Rolex

IMG_4311.jpg

At Badminton I thought it was an english thing that found us obsessively discussing the weather, but nothing changes here in Lexington; except for the weather, that is. Very wet, and windy. We’re all hoping for less wet and that the wind will help dry everything out, although at the moment it’s been blowing everything (tents, temporary railings) over as fast as it can be put up.

IMG_4312.jpg
The ground is definitely very wet, but the actual course, the galloping lanes, are pristine. I bumped into William Fox-Pitt hacking Neuf des Couers about half an hour after he’d arrived in Lexington from England, and he’ll probably get the worst of the footing, as he’s drawn very last to go.

I also saw Jane Atkinson briefly, and she told me she was very much enjoying her volunteer role at Rolex this year, and doesn’t miss being in the Director’s Chair one bit. She also said that the sunken road may be a splash this year, depending on how much water drains out of it by saturday, but if any of the jumps – sunken road, waters, or otherwise, aren’t deemed safe, they’ll be taken out of the competition on saturday morning.

Bettinna Hoy is here until friday helping Michael Pollard, and also a few other riders. She arrived in Atlanta last friday, so missed Badminton, and looks like she’ll miss the nice weather here too once it finally improves, unlucky timing.

This is Diana Burnett on a half brother to her Rolex ride, Manny; they’re both by the same sire, Shigatzi. Indy is a 6 year old, who did his first prelim at the Florida Horse Park a couple of weeks ago, and is on his way home to Canada with Diana via Kentucky. He’s a nicely put together horse, big scopey chest, and strong hind end, which I saw him putting to good use in a bit of a rodeo session later, Diana did very well to stay on! The wind was certainly playing havoc with people’s schooling sessions so others decided just to hack.

Trot-up has been moved to 10am wednesday morning due to some more “weather” expected in the afternoon, and then the competitor’s briefing is at 1pm. Looking forward to bringing you lots more news from the Horse Park, thanks for reading, stay dry, ha ha, and Go Eventing!

Badminton 2011, can it really be over?

I have Badminton and England withdrawal, and if it wasn’t for Rolex starting tomorrow, I don’t think I could have got on that plane. The end of a three day, even if you’re not competing, is such an anti-climax, and there’s unpacking and laundry to be done, not to mention if you were riding, the inevitable post-mortem on performance, the woulda, coulda, shoulda.

The good news, I have some pictures and reports from the Ky Horse Park – it’s wet, and windy!- no, I have more, coming in the next post, but first I wanted to share the last of my Badminton photos from yesterday morning’s trot-up. (already seems like a week ago.)

Lots of wonderful memories, a fantastic event. Please check out Nico Morgan’s website as he continues to add brilliant pictures all the time. So far, this is one of my favourites. He also helped me out throughout the event, and I’m thrilled to have met him in person at last – even better in “real life”!
And so on to Rolex…can Toddy win the second leg of the Grand Slam, as Eventing Safety John seems positive he can? After this weekend I wouldn’t count it out – NZB Grass Valley did Badminton last year, then came to the Ky Horse Park for the WEG, and he has Todd on top…We’ll keep you posted with everything Rolex from now on, keep it tuned to Eventingnation.com and go Eventing!

Tell me why I don’t like mondays….

I’ve made it to Heathrow; I’m not sure if the journey flew by because my mother was texting me live show-jumping scores from the first round, or because I really was flying, we do drive quite fast over here, that’s my excuse for a fistful of US speeding tickets. I’ve turned in my zoom-zoom little car with gears, I’m biting my lip (the stiff, upper variety), and I’m going to try and post as many of this morning’s photos as I can before I have to board.

IMG_3990.jpg
Nick Gauntlett taking Elektron for a hack before the trot-up

There were quite a few horses going for gentle hacks around the park this morning before the jog, Colombo was one of them, and Duarte Seabra’s Fernhill Gloster Rebel looked very bright and strong, Duarte said Carol (Gee) told him not to risk taking the direct route at the double of corners even though they jumped them clear last year, and despite taking the long way there, and a “silly stop” they still only had 11 time faults. I’d say he was one of the fitter horses on course. I watched the trot-up with my former trainer, Young Rider and Junior Trainer Gill Watson, and we chatted with Lucinda Green about whether the horses on the whole were fit enough yesterday.

Overnight leader Mark Todd’s NZB Land Vision definitely looked extremely tired at the end, and Mark had to nurse him home using all his vast experience, but all the kiwi horses looked absolutely outstanding this morning, especially both of Caroline Powell’s; Lenamore positively floated down the runway, I’m not sure if his hooves even touched the gravel!

Although Lucinda told me before the trot up that Prada was quiet this morning for the first time that she could remember, she was certainly full of herself at the trot-up, and almost too much to handle! Sadly, Lucinda will not be coming out to Rolex as she’ll be staying in England with her daughter Ellie, and competing locally next weekend, while Clayton rides Be My Guest in Kentucky.

Must go and board my plane, there are a few more to get to later, but in the meantime enjoy the show-jumping, see you at Rolex, and go 4* eventing!

Charlotte Opperman – Happy Owner!

Charlotte Opperman tells us how thrilled she is with her horse Wild Lone, ridden by Harry Meade, after a clear cross country round at his first Badminton.

Congratulations, and good luck in the show jumping tomorrow. Thank you very much for talking to us and sharing your happiness. Thanks again to Hilary Manners of eventing worldwide for the making the introduction. I’m now going to get a drink, and Go Eventing!

Tony Pellet – competitor and outrider

Tony Pellet competed at Badminton himself, but now helps the riders negotiate their way through the crowds on cross country day. However, don’t completely rule out seeing him don his silks, body protector and number bib again. He had a spare couple of minutes to chat.

Thanks for the chat, Tony, and hope you don’t have to work TOO hard today! Go Eventing!

Colombo’s Cross Country Prep

Selena O Hanlon rode a beautiful dressage test yesterday to leave her in 10th place overnight, and I found Colombo’s groom Anne-Marie, and asked her what cross country morning is like.

Thanks for talking to us, Anne-Marie, and best of luck to Selena and Colombo. Go eventing!

Sam Griffiths’ Happy Times has ben one of my favourite horses for a long time, so I was thrilled to see him grazing calmly on cross country morning and had a chat with his lovely groom Ode, and please excuse me if I mis-spelt your name.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, and wishing Happy Times and Sam a fantastic ride, we hope to see all three of you at London next year.
