Weekly OTTB Wishlist from Cosequin

Know what looks great under a Christmas tree? A shiny new OTTB. But don’t wait around for a delivery from Santa, as we hear he’s more of a reindeer connoisseur than a horseman.

Take a tip from Tennessee eventer Shannon O’Hatnick, who snagged this handsome guy just in time for the holidays. Black Market (After Market – Keep the Feeling, by Kris S.) is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred OTTB who was retired from the track after seven starts.

Welcome to the fam Black Market!!

Oh my god he’s the cutest and I actually still can equitate after over a month not jumping. Allie Knowles you’re the best

So fancy — can’t wait to see him in a startbox. Congrats, Shannon! Here are three more OTTBs who are ready for a new career.

King Gettigan (Read the Footnotes – Red Hot Peppers, by Jelly Roll Blues): 2011 16-hh bay gelding

Gettigan’s owner is sending him off from racing with gratitude for his accomplishments on the track. This young gelding has had a respectable racing career with $100,000 in earnings and three wins in 39 starts. He last raced on Nov. 11, 2016 and finished second.

He is reported to be nice to work with, sound and without vices. FLF admired his athletic build and nice, fluid movement at the jog. Here’s your chance to take a cute gelding to next year’s RRP at a bargain price.

True Simon (Harlan’s Holiday – True Addiction, by Yes It’s True): 2012 16-hh bay gelding

True Simon is so truly alluring that he’s worth taking home just to look at! His soon-to-be manly physique and his impossibly cute expression that is sparkly yet vulnerable will melt your heart.

But it gets better! Simon is athletic, and when he grows into his adult self, he will be jaw-dropping. He’s studious but playful, curious but analytical, and he’s fascinated by new challenges and unknown things. This is a horse with silver screen quality and we can’t wait to see who he will become.

Enter to win this prize package valued at $160 from Nupafeed!

Happy Sunday, EN! It’s day seven of EN’s 12 Days of Christmas, and today we’re giving away a Nupafeed prize package valued at $160. The prize package includes three liters of Nupafeed Magnesium Daily Liquid and two Nupafeed Magnesium Concentrate Oral Syringes.

Using magnesium to manage stress and anxiety in horses is not a new concept, but Nupafeed Magnesium Supplement exclusively contains MAH (magnesium-aspartate-hydrochloride). This unique form of magnesium, pioneered by the German pharmaceutical company Verla-Pharm, has exceptionally high absorption rates to improve results.

One look at the testimonials page on the Nupafeed website will show you that countless top riders from all disciplines have successfully used the Magnesium supplement with impressive results. Here’s a look at what eventers are saying about the product:

Sinead Halpin: “I’ve noticed a huge improvement to my horses’ mental and physical well-being at home and the ability to maintain focus at competitions.”

Jen McFall: “I was looking for a product that could miraculously change a performance horse’s ‘nervous edge’ to a ‘winning edge.’ After trying Nupafeed on a few of my own horses at competitions and getting fantastic results, I am recommending this product to all of our clients at Dragonfire.”

Tamie Smith: “The difference Nupafeed has made in my horses is remarkable. Upon putting my horses on their Magnesium supplement, some of the horses who had felt anxious, specifically in competition, became incredibly ridable. It has been a game-changer for my team and is something you have to experience to believe!”

Now it’s your chance to try Nupafeed Magnesium Supplement for yourself! Enter to win the prize package using the Rafflecopter widget below. Entries close at midnight EST. Click here to learn more about Nupafeed’s supplements. Good luck!

I always knew on some vague level that show jumping was more a year-round sport than eventing, but I never appreciated until recently to what extent. December is by far the slowest month I’ve encountered since taking the helm at our sister site, Jumper Nation, and by that I mean there’s only a five-star every weekend in ONE continent each weekend, rather than one on a few continents, or multiple events in one country.

This weekend, for example, is the Olympia London International Horse Show, and above you’ll see one of the dedicated grooms who lives on the road with her boss’s horses. Those grooms live, eat, breathe and fly with the horses in such tandem that only those brief, ferocious jump rounds separate one from the other. The connection between horse and rider is awe-inspiring, but hats off to the love between horse and groom.

Extra deep seat. Cut back. The Adelaide is a single-flap dressage saddle designed for eventing riders who want to improve their dressage position and feel closer to their horse. Best of HN: 11 Signs Equestrians Are Easy to Please, Winter Edition

Shout-out to Rossy Morillo for inspiring this list and providing sign #3!

For all the fuss and bother we equestrians make about things being absolutely just the way we want them — yes, I love when family members come help me do barn chores but seriously I hang the halters exactly that way for reasons I can’t explain to you and it drives me up the wall when you change it — we’re really not that hard to please.

In fact, the more we think about it, the more the weirdest things make us completely happy, especially in the high-maintenance season of winter. And to be totally truthful, winter is such a struggle for horse owners that we’re simply pleased just when things are going normally. Here’s a list.

1. When the blanket comes in from turnout with the same number of straps it was turned out with.

2. When the ice berm on the arena roof stays intact for your entire lesson.

3. Going out to the barn at 6:30 on a cold morning and finding that the buckets AREN’T frozen.

4. “He didn’t buck me off today!”

5. Opening the sliding barn doors on the first try without having to chip them free of ice and snow.

6. When the ice balls accumulated in the shoes pop free on the first twist of the pick.

7. When the hose surprisingly isn’t frozen into a giant crinkly curlicue.

8. “He finally pooped!”

9. When you realize you actually remembered to put a block down for your trailer jack back in the muddy autumn.

10. When you successfully made it to the manure pile with a fully-loaded wheelbarrow without slipping on the ice.

11. When you forgot to plug in the diesel but it starts anyway.

Go winter. Go riding.

The USEF announced last month that The Event at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, MT, would be the host of the 2017 NAJYRC eventing competition pending FEI approval. Now it is official: Rebecca Farm will be the site of the Young Riders Championships for eventing July 19-23, 2017.

Organizer Sarah Broussard has expressed sincere gratitude at the opportunity to host NAJYRC as it reflects her late mother Rebecca Broussard’s vision for assisting young riders on their path to competing at the upper levels of the sport.

“This competition exposes young riders to a true international championship. Being part of a high performance activity like this affords young riders the opportunity to work with coaches they might not normally meet,” said Sarah said. “It’s an incredible opportunity for young riders.”

It will be an extremely busy week at this world class venue in the Flathead Valley. In addition to the CH-J* and CICOY2* Young Rider Nations Cup divisions, Rebecca Farm will offer Novice to Intermediate horse trials, Novice and Training Three-Day Events, the full scope of FEH/YEH classes, and CCI*, CCI2*, CIC3* and CCI3* divisions.

“We are always looking for ways to grow The Event at Rebecca Farm, and hosting this championship will bring a larger international audience to The Event in July,” Sarah said. “We are honored to welcome new folks to the Flathead Valley each year and to showcase all the community has to offer.”

The 2017 NAJYRC will be a significant alteration to its typical format of having all six disciplines competing at the same location. HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, NY is the proposed location for dressage, jumping and para-dressage. The USEF has opted not to put forth a proposal for endurance as there was no feasible venue option, and we do not yet have information on the proposed location for reining.

The Event at Rebecca Farm will be a long trek across the country for many young riders and the conversations about fundraising and travel tips have already begun. Get in on the conversation: Let’s Discuss: NAJYRC 2017 or Bust.

12 Days of Christmas: Majyk Equipe Boyd Martin Infinity Stadium Jump Boots

Enter to win Boyd Martin Infinity Stadium Jump Boots! Photo via Majyk Equipe.

It’s day six of EN’s 12 Days of Christmas! The traditional song gives six geese a-laying as a gift on the sixth day, but today we’re giving away a full set of Boyd Martin Infinity Stadium Jump Boots from our super sponsor Majyk Equipe.

There’s a reason U.S. Olympians Boyd Martin, Phillip Dutton and Lauren Kieffer use Majyk Equipe boots. Majyk Equipe pioneered the concept of using a thermoplastic polyurethane outer shell to create superior leg protection, and since then they have continued to perfect the design to develop some of the most technologically advanced boots on the market.

Boyd Martin worked exclusively with Majyk Equipe to design these Infinity Stadium Jump Boots, with feature a durable TPU outer shell that is vented for breathability. In addition to the outer strike guard, the boots also feature an inner strike guard made from a revolutionary material called ARTi-LAGE. A soft foam in its normal state, ARTi-LAGE hardens when struck to deflect impact and disperse energy.

This giveaway includes a full set of front and hind boots. Photo via Majyk Equipe.

Finished with high-quality snap closures and nickel plated brass studs, the Boyd Martin Infinity Stadium Jump Boots from Majyk Equipe make an excellent addition to your horse’s competition wardrobe. The boots are available in black in one size designed to fit most horses, with a retail price of $119.99 for the fronts and $99.99 for the hinds.

Additionally, today is Independent Tack Store Day! All around the U.S. local tack stores are holding special giveaways and raffles, with many different companies (including Majyk Equipe!) participating. Doing better this year, but still way behind. Doing better this year, but still way behind.

And so it’s come to this. Just eight days left before the gifting extravaganza that is Christmas and I have done absolutely ZERO holiday shopping. This is only slightly better than last year or any year prior, but I’m still very much behind schedule. I keep telling myself that one of these days I’ll manage to be one of those super organized individuals who gets the overwhelming majority of their holiday shopping done in the first week of December.

Fortunately, the individuals I have on my list this year are all relatively easy to please and I have a good idea of what might bring some smiles to their faces.  For now though, it’s time to hoof it to my local tack store today for Independent Tack Store Day!

Friday Video from World Equestrian Brands: #BeLikeIngrid

#BeLikeIngrid isn’t just a hashtag; it’s a way of life for us here at EN. That’s why we’re drooling over this video of Ingrid Klimke riding Franziskus 75 in the Prix St. Georges Special at Nürnberger Burg-Pokal in Germany yesterday. They scored 74.976% for third place in the class.

Ingrid regularly competes at the highest levels of pure dressage, and this lovely 8-year-old Hanoverian stallion (FidertanzAntara, by Alabaster) is a real head-turner. Hat tip to Nicole Brown of Event Rider Masters and Eventing Podcast for letting us know about this video!
