Paradise Farm Holds Event in Memory of Karen Kelly

Lellie Ward sent in a report from the Paradise Farm Horse Trials held in memory of Karen Kelly over Memorial Day weekend. As you’ll read below, Karen was a dedicated Area III volunteer who is remembered for her love of the sport. Barry Koster was kind enough to provide some of his beautiful photos of the event. Many thanks to Lellie and Barry for sharing this report with us. Click here for results from the event. Go Area III.

From Lellie:

Paradise Farm hosted a new event over Memorial Day weekend. The weather was magnificent, and we were blessed with a good hard rain before the competition, making the spring grass absolutely perfect for galloping.

The competition was a memorial to one of Area lll’s best volunteers. Karen Kelly was one of eventing’s very special people. In fact, she was voted best volunteer of our area more than once. There was no job that Karen did not handle. Karen donated her time at every event venue in Aiken, S.C., and was a regular at Pine Top Farm Horse Trials in Georgia. She was the co-organizer of Paradise Farm Horse Trials until her passing. Paradise Farm intends on sending a donation to the American Cancer Society in Karen’s name.

The numbers were small at this competition, but the quality of horses and riders did not disappoint. We hope this event will grow, as it was the first time for Paradise on the USEA calendar. Divisions ran from starter through Open Preliminary. Horses from every state in Area lll were represented.

Kasey Mueller: Endurance Day at IEA Classic 3-Day

EN reader Kasey Mueller is at the IEA Classic 3-Day and Horse Trials in Indiana this weekend, one of the events in the SmartPak Equine USEA Classic Series.. Yesterday, she kindly sent us some photos from dressage day, and now she’s back with a brief report from cross country. Thanks for writing, Kasey, and thank you for reading!  [IEA Ride Times/Scores]

It takes a village — especially at the vet check. Photo by Kasey Mueller.

From Kasey:
Rain rain go away! It was a really busy day at IEA. There was a full range of competition from beginner novice to intermediate/preliminary with the horse trials going on at the Hoosier Horse Park on Saturday. In spite of the rainy conditions (again), everyone remained in good spirits.
Across the road, it was endurance day for the riders competing in the training and novice 3-day. It was pouring (again) when the training-level riders did their endurance phase first thing in the morning. But by the time the novice 3-day riders started their roads and tracks, the rain had all but stopped. And when the last person finished cross country, the sun was actually shining. It was thrilling to watch the competitors come off of road and tracks, gallop around the steeplechase course and then finish with cross country. Whew — no wonder they call it endurance day!
My favorite part of the day was spent in the vet check area before and after the 3-day cross country. The family and friends of each competitor awaited their rider’s arrival from phase 3, and then they would help cool the horse and rider off. The veterinarians were great with helping the competitors and their horses to recover.
It was a fabulous and fun team environment. Everyone was looking out for the entire competitor community. People would jump in and lend a hand cooling a horse or getting water for another rider if they had a small support team. One of the riders was overheard saying, “This is what I LOVE about Eventing! Everyone is so nice.” It was great to see the best part of eventing — really nice people coming together and supporting each other.

It’s officially Bromont Week! There are 25 entries in the CCI3* — including Kyle Carter and Madison Park! — nine in the CIC3*, 29 in the CCI2* and 45 in the CCI1*, which means it will be a busy and exciting weekend of competition. I’m pumped that the Dream Team (AKA Samantha and I) will be reunited for the first time since Jersey Fresh, and we’ll be bringing you all the action from Bromont starting Wednesday at the first horse inspection. This will be my first trip to Bromont, and I’m really looking forward to it. Be sure to come up and say hi if you’re there this weekend. Go eventing.

Let Me Introduce Myself…

Hi Eventing Nation, allow me to introduce myself. You may have seen a few posts that I’ve written floating through the Eventing Nation headlines over the last couple of days and for those of you who don’t know me, let this serve as our official introduction.
Many people know me as Boyd Martin’s barn manager and groom. I have met many of you at events all over the place over the last two and a half years in my time working for Boyd, and I know many more of you Midwesterners from my pursuits of lower level riding in Area IV.
Over the last several years, I have groomed at events almost every weekend and been responsible for the day to day operations at a few of the most successful eventing barns in the country. Although I am no stranger to small town eventing, I have groomed at several big time events including Rolex Kentucky, Burghley, Boekelo and the Olympic Games.
You will begin seeing more and more posts from me here on Eventing Nation covering everything from how to keep a white tail white, to how to set up a worming schedule for your horse. Through these posts, and with the launch of my new Facebook page, “View From the Barn”, I hope to share some of the insight I’ve learned over the years in my work. I’ll share the frustrations and problems I’ve come across, the mistakes I’ve made, and the solutions that I’ve learned or created in order to manage an elite eventing stable and to care for top horses at the peak of their careers.
While I have undoubtedly learned an immeasurable amount from my work with specific horses, I aim to provide an educational resource here, outlining techniques that cover a broad scope of horsemanship and barn management. I hope that the general information that will be shared here will help you in caring for your own horse or managing your own barn.
As always, feel free to ask me questions, or share with me the problems you have been struggling with in caring for horses. While I don’t have all of the answers, I am here to help, bounce ideas off of, and offer my experience.
Happy reading and horsing around!

Saturday Video from Horse Nation: Prancercise Your Heart Out

http://youtu.be/o-50GjySwew

Horse Nation has done it again….and found the next viral video for horse people. This time, it’s an absurd exercise routine called “Prancercizing”. This is real life, folks.

From HN:

Prancercise, “a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait,” was invented in 1989 but never caught on–until NOW.

I’ll leave the introduction to Miami New Times blogger Ciara LaVelle, who explains, “Prancercise LLC, which is a real company selling Joanna Rohrback’s idea of imitating a horse to achieve your perfect bikini body, started publishing videos to YouTube five months ago. They feature Rohrback herself, outfitted for her workout in a tailored salmon jacket, white pants, pearls, and full makeup. She straps on her ankle weights, just like real horses do.”

Now, the fitness trend is sweeping the web.

The Training Diaries with Allie Knowles: Cross-Country Schooling

Roxy schooling the water at the Kentucky Horse Park

Yes, yes, it’s been far too long again since we caught up with Allie Knowles to find out how her two lovely six year old mares, Komik and Roxy are doing. Most of that is my fault completely, but in the meantime Allie has also been fairly busy posting the best North American dressage score at Rolex on Last Call, and had a fantastic ride cross country there as far as the sunken road, she told me. Fergie, aka Last Call is in good form and enjoying a holiday in her field at home in Paris, Kentucky. Allie is more fired up than ever after her first taste of the big time, “It was so much fun out there, I was just bummed that it ended early.” Allie explained that Fergie is an extremely careful horse, and after an odd jump at the big ditch and wall where she thinks Fergie perhaps misread the question, as she was on a great distance to it but Fergie smacked her hind legs pretty hard on it, she stopped at the next jump, the Sunken Road, and Allie elected to retire.  Fergie’s autumn plans are still up in the air at the moment, but Allie laughed and said she’s positive that a diet will be in her immediate future as “her ribs have disappeared!”

Komik schooling at the Kentucky Horse Park

Both mares went out last weekend at the MayDaze Horse Trials – Komik  in the Preliminary Division, which by all accounts was an extremely tough cross country; for example, two houses on the two mounds that they use for Rolex out by the sunken road, at fence 5, a coffin that used to be a three star question, and with the early morning start times  the shadows and low sunlight was compounding the problems.  Unfortunately, the usually unflappable Komik seemed genuinely confused, and after a couple of stops at different fences Allie called it a day on her.  Roxy was in the Training Division and finished on her dressage score.  Allie and I talked about her weekend, and how she decided to move on from it.

Having watched Allie school them both I made a mental note to myself that if I ever wanted a babysitter I should call her – she has the patience of a saint! Is there anything more frustrating in the world than a super-talented chestnut mare being….a chestnut mare? (Perhaps only my daughter!)

Many, many thanks to Allie for sharing everything with us as part of her journey with these two talented horses – I’m not sure if she ever realised quite what she was signing up for when she agreed to do this for us, but I know that we’re all extremely appreciative of her insights and honesty as she tackles these typical problems.  If you have any particular training questions for Allie please leave them in the comments below and we’ll address them in the next installment. Thank you as always for reading/watching, and Go Eventing!

Kasey Mueller: Dressage Day at IEA Classic 3-Day

EN reader Kasey Mueller is at the IEA Classic 3-Day and Horse Trials in Indiana this weekend, one of the events in the SmartPak Equine USEA Classic Series.. Yesterday she kindly sent us some photos from the first horse inspection, and now she’s back with a brief report from a soggy day of dressage. Thanks for writing, Kasey, and thank you for reading!  [IEA Ride Times/Scores]

From Kasey:

On Friday, the Training 3 Day Classic competitors started the day with a new twist on the sport- snorkel Dressage, in swimsuits. Just kidding! But that would have been more appropriate attire for their rides than formal dressage wear. This is an all-weather sport so the competitors muscled through, and rode their tests in a significant downpour that went on for a couple of hours. The Novice 3-Day competitors got lucky when the rain lightened to a steady drizzle- but their dressage arena resembled a swimming pool.
Dressage continued throughout the day and Mother Nature finally decided to smile on us with some sunshine late in the afternoon.
Through it all, the amazing volunteers at IEA were supportive, cheerful, and encouraging- in spite of being soggy wet and cold. Our heros!

Using the downpour to rinse the soap off your horse is one way to make lemonade out of lemons!

I think this photo is just funny. This is my mare, Pretty Hip Hop Hotty, at VAHT last weekend.

It’s the weekend, Eventing Nation!  I hope everyone is having plenty of pony time to go around.  I know I am.  This week was a bright light for me, as Bug has finally been given the ok to start walk and trot fitness work!!!  The past two days, I rode him around with a huge grin on my face.  Oh, how I missed sitting on him!  Unfortunately, he has developed a bit of the Thelwell Pony look, so we will be doing a lot of hills to get him back to fighting weight.
