Friday News & Notes from FLAIR Nasal Strips

The lovely Missie leads the way with Will Faudree in the irons in the CIC3* at Jersey Fresh

Happy Friday, Eventing Nation! Even though my horse took it upon himself to go bang a leg and get some lymphangitis this week, thereby removing himself from the competition at Jersey Fresh, I am thoroughly enjoying watching all my friends kicking butt and taking names. Let’s also bow in amazement to the non-human Jenni Autry, who has been at THREE 3-days in the past 3 weeks. Starting with Rolex, then with Badminton, then to Jersey Fresh, the girl has spent more time travelling than is humanely possible, and is somehow still standing. If you see her at Jersey, bring her some espresso and a hug.

Mackenna Shea & Landioso Lead the CCI3* after dressage. Mackenna is one of a number of west coast invaders this year at Jersey Fresh, and she beat the big guys after day one, laying down a 46.7 to top second placed Mensa with Michael Pollard and third placed Buck with D.A. Adirmo. [Dressage Day One, CCI3*]

In the CIC3*, Andromaque really shone for Will Faudree, in preparation for Saumur CCI3* in a few weeks. Missie put in a lovely test to steal the show with a 47.1 over second placed Jessie Phoenix & Pavarotti. Missie most recently won the Advanced at Southern Pines, and we know the mare can jump a house, so I look forward to her on cross country day! [Andromaque Wins CIC3* Dressage]

In the weirdest news I think I’ve heard, a new study in sports medicine is discouraging specialization for young athletes.  A US sports medicine specialist says that those who concentrate on only one sport at a young age rather than diversifying rarely reach elite level. I thought the idea with riding was that you were only good if you started when you were 3, and did nothing else! That was my life plan…..maybe it wasn’t such a good one? As for the saddest news, 30 horses burned alive in a slaughter-bound truck in Pennsylvania this week. The truck caught fire while the driver was en-route to Canada for a slaughter house, but while he stopped and attempted to extinguish the flames, he was unable to be effective, and all 30 horses died.
