The Australian Olympic Committee has committed $50 million into its Olympic athletes. The funding will be directed towards initiatives to help financially support Olympic athletes, who may have given up other career paths or income streams in their pursuit of the Games, future retirement, and the return of a mother to the sport. New research, supported by grants from the Chromatic Fund in honor of a show jumping horse who died at a competition in Europe, has identified potential links between corticosteroid injections and longterm ill effects. Surprisingly, not much research had previously been done on this topic, and Dr. Lauren Schnabel, a professor of equine orthopedic surgery and prolific researcher of joint therapies at NC State University, has undertaken this subject with her team. The once near-extinct Przewalski’s Horse has made its way back onto their historic homeland — the grasslands of central Kazakhstan — thanks to the diligent efforts of research, breeding and planning. A reintroduction of several horses was recently made, and National Geographic was there to chronicle it. You can read the full article here.
