1. Where were the 1986 World Championships held? (I’m just giving you one to get warmed up!)
The 1986 World Championships were held in Gawler, which is located near Adelaide, Australia. In 1997, the Gawler Horse Trials were replaced by the Adelaide International Three Day Event.
2. What horse did Derek di Grazia compete in the World Championships in 1986?
Derek di Grazia competed the great Sasquatch, whom he also won Rolex with in 1985, resulting in his short listing for the World Championship team in 1986.
3. Who was the leader after dressage?
The USA was atop the leaderboard after dressage, as Torrence Watkins Fleischmann scored a 46 with Finvarra to take the initial lead.
4. Name the fence that Mark Todd fell from Charisma. (The one fall rule still gets me to this day. Plus, Sir Todd gets some major props for the ease with which he can just hop back in the saddle)
Mark and Charisma fell at the C element of fence 9, the Dead Man’s Pass. In true Mark Todd fashion, though, he hopped right back on and continued on his way. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to ride a massive cross country course in soaking wet clothes on soaking wet tack, but Mark got it done and finished in the top 10 individually.
5. Who went on to be the highest placed U.S. horse and rider that year?
J. Michael Plumb and Bluestone were the highest placed U.S. pair with a final score of 119.8 for eighth place overall.
