Lucinda Fredericks and Flying Finish bested an all-star field — which featured Mark Todd and William Fox-Pitt — to win the first leg of the Express Eventing Series in London yesterday, which will continue through next year in the UK. This new eventing format seeks to make the sport more spectator-friendly, holding all three phases in a single arena. The dressage tests are ridden to music, with cross country running on an optimum time. Show jumping immediately follows, allowing riders to play it safe or risk it all by going for the joker fence at the end of the course. Jumping clean over the joker fence means taking four points off the final score. With all that excitement under one roof, Lucinda described the atmosphere in the arena as “electric.” I imagine the organizers are very pleased with a successful start to the series.
