Rafalca’s Thursday News & Notes from Devoucoux

Now that the notorious (dare I say, legendary) staff at Eventing Nation has thoroughly reported and overanalyzed all of the Olympic team selections from every country who has thus far made any sort of official notice on the subject, it’s time to focus on some really important topics.

Namely, Steven Colbert. Yes, you heard me right. If you aren’t wildly addicted to Facebook or Twitter (maybe EN is your only addiction!), you might not have noticed the news from yesterday morning about Steven Colbert’s newest favorite sport. Mitt Romney co-owns a mare named Rafalca who is ridden by Jan Ebeling, and recently was 3rd in the recent USEF Dressage selection trials for the Olympic Games. Brian O’Connor has dubbed this horse a possible “First Horse”. The horse has her own Twitter feed @RafalcaRomney (description: “I dance for Mitt Romney so you don’t have to“), and now she gets to be the reason for Steven Colbert loving Dressage. [Seriously, he really does]

Andrew Nicholson is heading into Luhmühlen this weekend trying his darndest to knock old WFP out of his kingly throne of HSBC Classics Champion. He’s bringing three mounts: the old veteran Mr Cruise Control who was 4th there in 2010, a lovely first-timer named Shady Grey, and Calico Joe, the horse we recently saw him retire at Rolex after bit of trouble at the coffin. WFP isn’t attending Luhmühlen this weekend (because he so totally crushed the opposition in two divisions at Bramham), so Andrew’s looking to get a leg up. (Note: mis-reported in this article is Boyd and Remington, who in reality is Ying Yang Yo) [Australians are taking over]

Speaking of Boyd-y, we got a report today that the old “Ying Yang”, or Thomas, passed the first inspection with flying colors. Looks to be dressage slated for the two old chums on Friday morning. Boyd is excited about having his old partner back at the four star level, but less thrilled about Silva running amuck through the shops. [Boyd & Silva take Germany]

Surefire Farm is still accepting entries for next weekend’s HT! Looks that they are giving out some serious dough for the Smartpak sponsored John C. Chester Intermediate Challenge ($10,000!) as well as hosting a Professional Riders Organization (PRO) Junior Young Rider Training Level Scholarship observation competition. [Win a free week’s training with Jan Byyny or Marcia Kulak]

Guess who else is taking over the world?! Irish Sport Horses. No, seriously. Let me give you a brief list of horses already nominated for London who are ISH: High Kingdom, Imperial Cavalier, Kilrodan Abbott, Lenamore, Major Milestone, Grass Valley, Mr Cruise Control, Loughan Glen, Mighty Nice, Mr. Medicott and Ringwood Magister. [Irish Pride]

Thoroughbred trainer John McNair talks about those crazy horse compression suits you may have seen or heard about. The superbly successful filly Black Caviar uses one, as well as some notable event horses! He says it significantly reduces muscles soreness after work, cools the blood to the internal organs, and thinks it’s a huge part of his team’s success and the longevity of his racehorses. [Video]
