Thursday Reader from Devoucoux

This was my view yesterday, can you guess where I was??

Hello Eventing Nation! If you read the article yesterday, you’ll know that I’m writing you from warm and sunny South Carolina, which so far has been both good and bad. Good because I’m getting a tan, and bad because I’m getting a farmer’s tan (again). Good because my horses get to be naked most of the time, bad because they are being attacked by flies and the sweat irritates their skin. Sigh….the troubles of wintering in the sandy south-lands!

News From Around The Globe:

In what I consider the biggest “what the….” move of the year, the KY Horse Park has terminated announcer Nigel Casserly from the job less than 100 days away from Rolex. Nigel has been the voice of Rolex for the past 35 years, and Rolex simply will not be the same without him. “I’ve spent 35 years getting [that sound system] to the most comprehensive of any four-star event in the world,” said Casserly, who founded National Equestrian Communications in 1976, providing public address systems and announcing services to competitions across the country. WHAT were they thinking?? They are replacing Nigel with British commentator Michael Tucker, who I’m sure is fine, but he’s no Nigel. [KY Horse Park Replaces Nigel Casserly]

The USEF has released a list of events that will be official selection trials for applicants to the 2014 WEG team. Unsurprisingly, all of the CCI4*’s are on there, along with the majority of big name CCI3*’s that you would expect. Fair Hill, Bromont, and Galway Downs are on the list, along with Samur, Blenheim, Boekelo and many more. Jenni has the full scoop later on in the day. [WEG Selection Trials]

Over in Ireland, Ginny Elliot has bowed out of the race for the new Irish Eventing  High Performance Manager. Ginny fulfilled this role from 2008 to 2012, and applied for re-election, but recently withdrew her application. She leaves with no hard feelings, and the Irish look forward to announcing their new team captain by the end of the month. [Ginny Elliot Leaves Irish Team]

Did you hear about the burgers testing positive for horse meat in Ireland? Yep, that happened. A British company called Tesco was bombarded with angry customers and issued a recall and an offer for full refund on burgers purchased. Several of their burger patties were found to carry up to 30% horse meat, instead of cow. What I find more disturbing was that 85% of the patties tested also showed pig DNA, which means that the burgers are simply a mish-mash of several species and ground up  with little to no consideration. Gross. [Tesco Apologizes for Horse Burgers]
