Thursday Reader from Devoucoux

Well, it’s Thursday again. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m pretty seriously sick of being frozen every day all day. Dear Mother Nature: I’m over it. Stop snowing, stop raining cold sleet on my head. I want the end of wearing two t-shirts, a sweater, a sweatshirt, a light jacket and a poofy jacket. I would like to be able to feel my toes at the end of my day. I’ve come to the realization that if this is going to be the way of the world, I’m moving to Florida for the first four months of the year. Terrible!

News From Around The Globe:

As we here in the US are all very fond of NZ Thoroughbred (*cough* NEVILLE *cough*), we like to see that New Zealand is making new laws to protect retiring Thoroughbreds off the track. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) says it is in the process of submitting to the Department of Internal Affairs a rule change which would place requirements on the owner of a horse leaving the racing industry to inform NZTR when a horse was sold or gifted to another party, including the full identity and contact details of the new owner. This means that horses can’t just disappear into the depths and helps prevent horses ending up in bad situations. Yay! [New OTTB Regulations in NZ]

After requiring abdominal surgery following the birth of her foal, Rachel Alexandra is finally home recuperating at Stonestreet Farm. Rachel will be following the tried and true method of a few weeks grazing, a few weeks in a round pen, and then eventually full turnout. Get well soon, Rachel Alexandra! Bruce Davidson: did you know he likes to put his left sock on first, his left pant leg on first, and his left sleeve on first? Yeah, me neither. Superstitions aside, here’s a cool little interview with the old legend himself. [Bruce Davidson Interview]

As the EHV-1 continues to spread around the US, we now have confirmed cases of two horses in California. Both horses attended the HITS Desert Circuit showgrounds, and have both been quarantined thus far. Also, a mare coming from southern California to Montana has now been diagnosed. Please be mindful that the disease is still running about, and keep an eye on your horses! [More EHV-1 Cases in California] [Two Cases in Montana]
