Thursday Reader from Devoucoux

I sincerely hope everyone avoids this fate this weekend

Happy Thursday Eventing Nation! I hope you all are finally ready for summer, because I think it has arrived. Yesterday was a balmy 87 in Virginia, and I have new tanlines that I didn’t know were possible from riding all day outside. I also wore a dress to Mother’s Day brunch with my family, and my 85 year old grandmother told me that I “need that self-tanner, darling, because you’re legs are just so white!”. Thank you, grandma, I know it’s weird that my arms are ten shades darker than my legs.

News from Around the Globe:

Big news from Kim Severson Eventing….she has acquired Fernhill Fearless (aka Sparky) from her student Nina Ligon, and they will be debuting at the Virginia Horse Trials in a week! Sparky was instrumental in Nina’s education and her path to the Olympics last year, and with Kim’s excellent dressage skills, the two will soon be a formidable pair of competitors at the upper levels. It will be so good to see Kim competing at the top again, so congrats to KSE! [Kim Severson Eventing Facebook]

Chattahoochee Hills HT is now CHC International Horse Trials, and they are on a mission to make it your destination event. This year is the inaugural May event, and they are offering literally every division from Beginner Novice through a CIC3*. There is a CIC for each international level, as well as national level equivalent divisions. Holy cow. Why didn’t I enter? It promises to be a ridiculously good time, for competitors and spectators both! [CHC International]

Have you been obsessively following Derby winner Orb like I have? NO? Why in the world not! It’s a true testament to the faith of horse riders/trainers/lovers everywhere that we STILL persist in our dreams of seeing a Triple Crown winner. There are many experts that say it can’t be done, but….what about this year?! Check out all your ORB links and info as he goes into the second race in the Triple Crown this Saturday. Speaking of which….here’s the entry list for The Preakness. [Equibase Entry Info]

In honor of my absurd tan lines and very Rudolph-like nose, I recommend you go to SmartPak and get some Sunshield Long Sleeved Shirts. If you are even close to spending a few hours (or more!) on a horse every day during this summer, I gotta tell you that sunscreen just isn’t going to cut it. And aside from going shirtless to stay cool and avoid tan lines, you really need a cool, professional shirt that blocks 98% of harmful UV rays. [SunShield Shirts]

Need a last minute event in the Northeast? Flora Lea Horse Trials on May 25, 26, 2013 is still accepting entries!  They take entries via EventEntries.com or fax to 609-654-0879, by May 18th.  Located in Medford, New Jersey, Flora Lea is one of the many Area II events this spring. [Flora Lea HT]
