Thursday Reader from Devoucoux

This is my fall view, what's yours look like?

Happy Thursday Eventing Nation! Right now, a lot of us are a week out from the day in which we unashamedly stuff our faces with carbs, tryptophan, and sweets in pumpkin flavor. For my part, I am going to indulge in my other great love (baking) and make a triple layered pumpkin cake with cinnamon maple frosting. No big deal, I’m just Martha Stewart in riding pants.

Let’s not forget that a week from today begins the very last three day event of the 2012 year, with Adelaide CCI4* commencing. Did you read my preview? Let’s be real here and admit that we all look forward to the video interviews of those good looking Australians and their wonderful accents. [Adelaide CCI4* Preview]

News from Around the Globe:

Obviously, it’s Thursday, aka Eventing Radio Show Day. This week’s gone Canadian! Catching up with both Steph Rhodes Bosch and Rebecca Howard, it promises to be an exciting episode. Also, as a good extra, they’ve got a book review of The Eighty Dollar Champion, which chronicles the adventures of Harry deLeyer and Snowman through Show Jumping history. Harry deLeyer lives down the road from me, and sold me my second pony when I was 6, and the pony had the best name of all my horses: “Peanut Butter Pete”. I’m waiting to own another chestnut gelding so that I can revive the name again. [Eventing Radio Show]

Really exciting news for anybody who has ever experienced the awfulness of laminitis in horses, Veterinarians at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine have announced plans to conduct the first clinical trial of an experimental drug that has shown promise in treating horses stricken with laminitis, an excruciatingly painful and often life-threatening foot-related disease. Four horses suffering from laminitis have been treated with the investigational anti-inflammatory drug so far. One experienced a complete remission that has lasted for more than a year, and three others have shown some improvement. [UC Davis Reveals Amazing Drug for Laminitis]

How do you pick a trainer? Arguably one of the most difficult problems that we as competitive riders face, picking a coach or trainer is sometimes a stressful and always a serious thing. What if he/she doesn’t get along with Diablo? What if he/she steers you in the wrong direction, costing you time and money? Honorary Eventer (because she’s too cool to really be a Dressage rider) Lauren Sprieser lends her thoughts on the matter. [How Do You Pick A Trainer?]

Hot dog, an OTTB won a Grand Prix! Previously owned by Eventer Susan Beebee, sold to be a hunter, not quite fitting in there, OTTB Arkansas found his spot in the pure jumpers, and proved his mettle this past weekend in the $30,000 Duke Children’s Benefit Grand Prix with Hillary Simpson. The USEA’s inaugural attempt at the Thoroughbred Incentive Program was a successful one, and it’s coming back next year! The Jockey Club is happy to announce that the TIP will be offered in 2013 after the completion of a successful pilot program in 2012. The Jockey Club launched TIP to encourage the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines by offering sponsorship for Thoroughbred-only classes and divisions and high point Thoroughbred awards at open horse shows and competitions. The deadline for application for shows is December 15th, 2012. [TIP Returns for 2013] [Horse Show TIP Application]

Unfortunately, another fire has destroyed a barn this year. While luckily no horses or humans were harmed (the horses were all out for the night due to unseasonably warm weather), Whistling Ridge Farm fell victim to an electrical fire and was burnt to the ground within 30 minutes. This happened right near me, in Afton Virginia, and I know that the local Charlottesville Southern States is taking donations to help the owner rebuild, if you are so inclined. Healing Hearts Equine Rescue is offering an amazing silent auction right now! In order to help support Healing Hearts and their continuing service to the community and keep the current and incoming horses fed and happy through the upcoming winter months, they have put together a really wonderful silent auction. They have some amazing items, including lessons from big name trainers and riders, a breeding to a fabulous stallion, schooling opportunities and more.  The auction will run from November 13 – December 15. Look, don’t give me grief about this, I know it’s too early for Christmas stuff, but I can’t keep holding this video in my back pocket anymore. It’s just too good.
