One thing I love about eventers: They’re some of the most gullible suckers in the world when it comes to jumping cross-country. It doesn’t matter what it is–a wheelbarrow, a sinkhole, livestock–if you put red and white flags on either side of it, somebody out there is going be like, “Well, that’s kinda random but I reckon we’ll get it done.” I was at an event a few springs ago and the course designer had jokingly flagged a tall, skinny tree stump, maybe two feet wide, with an Easter basket on top. And sure enough, competitors were buzzing around like, “Do we really have to jump that? Maybe we should ask the TD.” It was some sort of weird Pavlovian response. Insanity in the middle… it’s a state of mind.

Here’s wishing Madeline Parisan from Area 2 a very happy 15th birthday from her gang her in Maryland! A friend writes, “This was a big birthday for Madeline after coming back and placing 3rd in her first team competition at NAJYRC in Kentucky in July. Look for her more this fall competing on three of her other OTTB horses!”

Video: Here’s Madeline riding Hope to Star in the CIC* at Plantation Field last September. Wow Madeline, for someone who’s not even old enough to drive a car, you sure can ride cross-country. Happy birthday!
