28 horses came forward for this morning’s final horse inspection at the Defender Burghley CCI5* following an enormously influential cross-country day yesterday, and just 27 will remain in the competition as we had into today’s showjumping finale.
Jennie Brannigan’s very experienced FE Lifestyle, who was trotted up by US chef d’equip Leslie Law owing to an ankle injury Jennie sustained last year, was sent to the holding box and ultimately spun upon reinspection. In a post on Instagram Jennie, who had climbed to overnight twelfth place after adding just 11.2 time penalties, said that the sixteen-year-old gelding pulled off an overreach boot in the Trout Hatchery and subsequently overreached on the inside and outside of his right fore, but is absolutely fine.
That was the only action the hold box saw all morning, and there were no overnight withdrawals — thanks, in no small part, to the very good ground on course yesterday.

The Spillers grooms’ prize for the best cared-for horse in the competition went to Paige Watson, groom for Max Warburton’s Deerpairc Revelry, while Erin Jarboe was runner-up for her work with Will Coleman’s Very Dignified. Very Dignified also earned Russell Deering the Worshipful Company of Farriers prize for the best-shod horse.
The morning’s petite showjumping section is already underway and we will return at 14.35 BST (9.35 a.m. EST) for the top twenty. Overnight leaders Gemma Stevens and Chilli Knight will be last to jump and currently enjoy a healthy margin of seven penalties — a rail and plenty of time in hand over Tim Price and Global Quest before any jumping has happened.
